FOURTEEN

Maya was restless that night. She tried to convince herself that it was jet lag but she knew that it wasn't true.

No. The reason for her restlessness was Rishabh.

She paced around her room, dressed in a white satin gown, her hair loose. There was a wine glass in her hand, already half empty.

Another hand was in the hair, a nervous habit.

But why was she actually nervous?

Was it because of tomorrow?

She knew what Rishabh had planned. The news of Bajaj takeover of Jindhal industries was already the talk of the town.

Everybody knew that once again the infamous Rishabh Bajaj had taken over someone's entire life's hardwork.

They had planned together for the past ten years. They were going to destroy the ones who destroyed their lives.

Who had snatched their happiness and peace and crushed it under their boots.

Everyone was going to pay the price.

And Jindhal was just the first one.

And Rishabh, poor Rishabh had been wronged monstrously.

Retribution was the only justice.

The only compensation for all that he had lost.

Even if for once she could forget her misery, she could never forget what Rishabh had endured at the hands of those people who were now pretending to be saints.

She didn't care for what the world thought of her or Rishabh. They had lost almost everything to those arrogant b*stards.

She still remembered His cruel smile. The man who destroyed her. His mocking laugh as he told her to stop fighting.

When he asked her price. Everyone one has a price, he had said. What is yours?

When she had met Rishabh ten years ago, they were both 22 and broken. Damaged beyond repair.

It was their pain, their agony that binded them together. It was their immense desire for vengeance that both pained them and sustained them.

He promised her that she would get her revenge and she had promised him that she would stand by his side.

And she had.

They patiently waited in the dark, waited for the fight moment.

She knew that in order to hurt those people, they had to outrich them. And now they finally had.

They planned and prepared for 10 years and now it was time.

This year will be a one that will be etched down in history. Kolkata will never forget this day.

But she knew that first they will eliminate the pawns, Rishabh will bring down the king on the same date of the same month when his mother was murdered.

When she was burnt alive.

Her screams still tormented Rishabh. He had watched her die when he was just twelve, twenty years ago. And now they will kill these monsters for the sake of Rishabh's mother, for the sake of her lost innocence, for the sake of vengeance, for their sake. They will do it or die trying.

With this thought, Maya smiled cruelly and threw the wine glass at the full length mirror in her room, shattering the glass before hot angry tears spilled out of her eyes and she sank to the floor, letting out a heartbreaking cry.

She fell on the floor and lost consciousness.

___________________________________________________

The next morning.

Rishabh was anxious. He was worried and distressed.

He hadn't been able to concentrate. Maya hadn't come to the office and she wasn't picking up the phone either.

She never did that before. Partly because, their lives always had risks and any moment might be their last. And partly because she knew that Rishabh worried.

So the fact that she wasn't picking up made him worried.

Shiv had landed in Kolkata and Rishabh had called him to check on Maya but Shiv hadn't called back.

Prerna could see that Rishabh was worried. But about what, she didn't know.

She had realized that she had started caring for him and had already crossed her boundaries. So she had wanted to maintain their professional relationship but seeing him distressed, she became worried.

Rishabh was trying to concentrate on what Prerna was saying but his mind kept going back to Maya.

And he was pulled in a flashback.

**********************************

Flashback

Ten years ago.

"Maya!" Rishabh shouted as he pounded on the door. There was no reply.

He kept pounding.

"Maya, for the love of God. Open the door," he shouted. "Maya! Don't be stupid. Let me in."

Still there was no reply. In fact he could hear nothing. It was so still that he was worried. What if this pain was too much for her to bear?

What if she tries to harm herself?

What if she already had?

The thought scared the living daylights out of him.

He stopped pounding, pushed his hair back and kicked the door. Once , twice until it opened.

He rushed inside and almost slipped, hurting his knee but he didn't care.

Her room was huge so it him a moment to find her.

She was lying, with her back to the full length mirror.

Her body was motionless. Her eyes half closed.

This sight stopped him in his tracks. And for a minute he thought that she had died.

He could hear his heart breaking. He couldn't breathe. He rushed to her side sank to knees beside her.

He hastily called the ambulance and waited for it, while he searched for the damage.

Perhaps she had taken sleeping pills.

She was half conscious so he whispered to her and to himself.

"You are the closest thing to a sister that I have. You mean a lot to me and I won't let you leave. I promise you , Maya, that I will bring that monster in front of you and I will hurt him so bad that he'll pray for death but death won't come to him. I promise."

He exhaled, shuddering.

*********************************

His phone rang. He and Prerna both looked at it.

It was Shiv.

That the diving providence that he had called.

He picked it up.

"Shiv, are you there? Is everything alright?" He asked, looking at Prerna.

Shiv hesitated for a moment and a moment was enough for Rishabh to realize that something was horribly wrong.

"Rishabh, it's about Maya. Something's wrong."

Damn! Their shared past stands partly disclosed and it's so painful. Though this chapter didn't have much on PreRish, I liked Prerna's concern for him. I wonder what will happen once she gets to know she's a pawn in his game.
