Same here. I SO wanted another Jodhaa Akbar- okay different story..but the same magic...
Again, I am truly inclined to believe Mohenjo got 'out of hand' fianncially due to some bad decisions of AG regarding shoots and costumes and locations- and that the script he based it on was somehow changed to the point where nothing could be done to save it.. and although not truly atrocious..MD needed a lot of money to recoup.
In Panipat's case ..the casting of AK and SD could have been done for sentimental reasons (friendships) and in the belief that : they will be less costly and still bring revenue- and that was the BIG mistake.
Although the script was pretty good from what I hear.. you need believability from actors and at least a decent set, decent VFX.. good action scenes..good emotional scens.
But the problem here was that AK is not HR to carry the movie to 50-60-100 cr on his name alone.. and then to add extra revenue from the rest of the cast's performances bringing people in theatres, or the good script, the music and so on....
The problem was that either Ashutosh got pressurized by producers to employ Arjun...or AG believed his own hype and thought his name alone will bring in the masses in droves.
I hear AG and Sanjay are old friends- so again he based his casting on Sanj success..thinking that the SD fans supported that 'bio' so they will also 'pile in' and watch his movie. But SD fans aren't what they were..and many watched that 'bio' for scandals and entertainments and such..
IMO- AG thought: I get AK and somehow I'll mould him to be bearable, and then SD will do good job somehow and also bring their fanbases to get sales..AND I got these two cheaply... Which was his WRONG step- as Arjun (from reviews and what I hear) was not just bad, but also lazy..and with Arjun being the 'base' of the 'cake', we understood the whole 'cake' was .toppling'.. Ashutosh 'singalled' to moviegoers that if Arjun is so unsuitable and bad then the whole movies is kinda bad- so Arjun dragged the movie down in the first place, helped by Sanjay... then everything fell apart..Kriti alone couldn;t save this..
SD further dragged it down..I hear he barely moved..wasn't in battles and spoke a mix of accents, even bringing tapori words to the role of an Afgani leader...
Ashutosh had constrains in budget, yes.. but he also must have had an overinflated sense of self.
It would have been best if he really employed a new actor that's talented and much cheaper.. and mould THAT actor well (or get a good, established actor and give shares from profits- so he doesn't need to inflate the budget).. and for SD role he should have taken some veterans that are well known for their acting qualities but are still pretty 'cheap' to employ...... The two main male leads should have been both imposing and radiating that aura of ..royalty... of a leader... not to show laziness or a 'barely there' attitude in the roles.
So it's a case of: director believing movie will sell on his name -with some help from the male leads- then not paying attention to the leads' acting .. or finessing the script.. changing parts of the initial script and making mistakes and continuity errors... rushing the editing.. trying to do a big movie with a smaller budget... using subpar tech in VFX and sets.. and it all showed..
Yes, AG gambled too much- and lost. I only wish he sits. Thinks. Reassesses. Puts it all on paper. Talks to moviemakers that are known to work with smaller budgets and do great movies. Maybe he can regroup and start again..and give good movies again.
