India has a UNIQUE relationship with it's cinema-going audience. It's larger than life, but also MAJORLY aspirational. And for sure INFLUENTIAL. Unlike most other countries. The way life and issues are depicted in films have a major influence on society. The portrayal of a monster like Kabir Singh (even though it is my favourite movie + performance of the year so far) is hugely PROBLEMATIC. The director is the culprit here. And the way he's "defended" himself after the release made me want to slap him 27 times (not because I love him).
If you look at films in the late 70s-through to the 80s - and early 90s - remember all those RAPE scenes??
There was a sister getting raped in every other film, and her brother or boyfriend would avenge it, that was the storyline of countless films. I feel like directors used these type of scenes to somehow tantalise their audience by showing a sexual act but "justifying" it :9
This has had a huge effect on the minds of young impressionable men - and look at the sexual abuse problem in India today. We need to talk about it and fight it.
