They do close it,there's one unused borewell near my native home and they have closed it with lid,But the fresh ones they only cover with sack and asked us to cover it with bucket and a stone above it..Its done as the submersible pump can be inserted only a day after drilling,mostly advised...also they insert PVC pipes too mostly till 100 ft or more so that the mud doesnt fall blocking the pump,PVC pipes added based house owner...
