In an interview with Vir Sanghvi ,Sridevi says about her being a child star, "But my mom made sure I led a normal life at home." I'd like to share this extremely sad story with you. Her mother was an extra from Telugu films living with an already married, briefless lawyer, a Tamilian Iyengar. Her overambitious mother put Sridevi into films at the age of four for money more than fame.
At that time many houses were rented out as 'portions' in Madras. Which basically meant that more than one family was allotted a space in an old crumbling edifice. Sridevi's family stayed in one 'portion' on the ground floor and my uncle and his family in the other.
Sridevi was quite a playful child whenever she was allowed to mingle with the other kids. One day, when Sridevi was about six, it appears that during a shooting, she was supposed to stand in the middle of a ring of fire before she was rescued. The child was petrified of fire and flatly refused to do the scene. The angry producer told the mother that he had no choice but to replace Sridevi with another kid. The mother pleaded for just one day to put things right.
That night, she came home and beat up Sridevi before locking her up without food in the dark bathroom. If there was another thing the child was scared of, it was pitch darkness. All through the night, my uncle and his family could hear Sridevi crying and pleading with her unmoved mother to let her out.
Next morning, the child came out shivering and agreed to do the fire scene. No wonder, while her mother was alive, the only comment Sridevi ever made was, "Ask mummy!"- Lakshmi Narayanan
PS: I searched Sridevi 's filmography & found that Lakshmi was talking about a scene from 1970 Telugu film Maa Naana Nirdhoshi . Sri was 6 at the time of shooting. Watch the video below from exactly 2:33:30 to 2:33:45
