Then I think I might enjoy the book from reading your plot and I generally like reading such books. I actually read more from ebooks though I have the original hard copies of most of these books I have mentioned. But reading from ebook is more comfortable for me. I will share the links of the books for you to download and start reading.I think I'll try the Hindi translation since I believe that Hindi is much closer to Bengali than English can ever be.
I rated it with a 5 star on Goodreads. It was my first try on Hindi literature and it was exactly the type of work I would expect from such a celebrated author as Premchand. It is about the trails a woman faces in the Indian society. It wasn't a cheerful story at all but reading the plotline of Apu's story in your post, I think you might enjoy it. I was actually stunned at how forward Premchand was. For a story written in the 1920s, it didn't feel like that at all. You can still relate to the story if you have some idea about our society, especially the poor or the rural ones. He takes a stab at malpractices like dowry, exploitation of village poor, mismatched marriages and its consequences.
Do you read ebooks? If so, can you semd me the link from where you get these books. I'll see if I can read the Bengali easily enough.
Can you add me on Goodreads. I will get better recommendations that way. All I get now is Vampire stories and Wizard of Oz, just because I have read 7 Harry Potter books.
Anyways what's your id on goodreads? Then I can add you.
