I am a south-Indian myself but used to love watching BW movies. Still do, but now I pick and choose movies that I want to watch. Finally BW is churning some good content movies...especially the likes of Taapsee, Ayushman, Akshay, Vidya etc. are all making some really good movies.

South Indians generally watch movies across states. For eg., a Telugu might watch Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada movies. So we have lot of options to choose from. As for Hindi, other than major big cities down south, I'm not sure how the audience would connect to the BW movies. First and foremost is the language issue. Not everyone knows Hindi. Secondly, the type of masala movies BW makes may not be interesting for the South Indian folks. The vice versa also holds true.

Having said that, I think BW actors are more popular than their south Indian counterparts. But content wise, south India, especially Kerala, has far superior content than BW. Actors down South are immensely talented and extremely hard working.

My best friend is a Mumbaiker. She always keeps joking saying "Na to hum idhar ke hai, na to udhar ke. South Indians bolte hai ki tum North Indian ho aur North Indians bolte hai ki tum South ke ho. Dono hi hamein apna nahi maante " smiley36

I don't think this is true. South India has a very large movie viewing market. It is not hostile to Bollywood or any film industry.

There are two reasons that Bollywood doesn't do so well in the south.

People prefer watching movies that cater to them. South India has major movie industries that cater to South Indians. So naturally, the first choice is to watch a movie catered to them. They will watch Hindi movies only if it has mass appeal and has been marketed to them.

Take most Hindi film viewers itself. Out of several South Indian movies made, we only watch a few that are heavily marketed to us or ones that stand out due to critical acclaim. South Indians do the same. They watch Hindi movies that are heavily marketed to them and stand out due to critical acclaim. Most Bollywood movies do not meet the cut.

The second reason hower is that Bollywood does not actively try to cater to the south. Bollywood has a very large captive audience and chooses not to adapt or market to the Southern audience.

Most Bollywood movies are set in North Indian locales. The families portrayed in them are usually North Indian. Pad Man inspired by a true story in the South was adapted to a North Indian village. Bollywood also has a history of stereotyping South Indians and using them as a punch line. Chennai Express claimed to be an ode to South Indian Cinema but used South Indian stereotypes for its jokes. All this together makes Bollywood less appealing.

I was born and raised in Bombay. My family is from Goa-Karnataka. My Grandma who was born and raised in Udipi grew up savoring Bollywood Cinema. She's a huge Salman fan. Some of my relatives down south prefer watching South Indian films. Some prefer watching Bollywood films. And some savor all kinds of films.

The notion that ALL South Indians DONT want to watch Bollywood is a big effing stereotype and a lie.

Why is the South Indian/Regional forum so dead then? Everyone only comes HERE To promote regional cinema. That in itself says enough.Stop piggybacking off of us here
