Yes we do show respect to higher officials , and we also show our gratitude in the form of thank you to the person who helps us. Veena has a highly negative image of RB in her mind. She believed RB wanted to humiliate her. Today she saw a RB that was different to her image. But her trust in her own judgement is stopping her in believing she may be wrong. She wants to thank him but is still not sure RB is a person worthy of her favourable opinion. So she combines the two, respecting judge and thanking RB by folding her hands midway. That was my interpretation. And yes this AT has some wonderful writers. Love reading everyone's viewpoints.
