Was Garam Masala a misogynist movie?

This movie was quite problematic if you look back at its story. A guy being in a relationship with 3 women at the same time, and not just that. He's their fiance, which means he has promised them for marriage to get them into bed. This comes under the act of rape according to Indian law. I'll be honest. This movie is still hilarious and I overlook its sexist tones while watching it, which I know makes me a hypocrite when I talk about women empowerment. I wonder if this movie had been shredded apart by feminists like Kabir Singh...if released today... Well, atleast the movie didn't show Akshay's character as a hero or tried to justify his act. He got caught in the end and it wasn't a happy ending.

Same with movies like Gharwali Baharwali and a govinda movie where he had 2 wives... Also, Kapil Sharma's movie with 3 wives. There are a ton of movies where the guy has an extramarital affair and sometimes it isn't even disclosed to the wife and they just live happily ever after. What about No entry? BW is full of these kind of movies. Kabir Singh was different from these and got more flak because of its extreme language and actions.

I have watched it some 50 times and still keep watching it whenever I want some laughter and I enjoy every bit of it. I also dont thi k it was made with bad intentions or to run some propaganda against women or to glorify cheating douchbags. It's genuinely funny movie.😆

Most of the classics like Sholay, HAHK, DDLJ ,KKHH etc would be misogynist if we watch it from today's lenses

exactly....if we start analyzing the movies of the yesteryear...with today's mindsets...we will be horrified....so there is no point....what is acceptable and what is not...continuously changing....what we as an audience accept today in movies might be unacceptable 20 years from now....so I don't even get the point of finding faults with movies done in previous decades..

The difference was that the cheaters got a happy ending in the movies you mentioned. Garam Masala did it right by making Akshay getting chased down by the girls which will happen in real life.

It didn't glorify cheating but it's supposed to be taken as a joke. In reality cheating and betrayal is not a joke. But that's what dark humour is I guess.

In real life, he would be imprisoned. Did that happen to him? In real life, this subject would not be funny subject... so.

C'mon...you think that was dark humour? It's considered funny because this subject about guys cheating on girls is so normalised in BW that people actually laugh at these things sometimes in real life too. BW filmmakers don't think twice before adding a comment or a scene related to this and show it as funny and people laugh too. It's not dark humour anymore. People take it lightly except when it happens in their own lives.
