Okay so going off an article his quote was "She is not a good actress and not a heroine. She is old; one doesn’t play a heroine at this age but rather the role of a mother.”
If he just stopped at the not a good actress part, it would have been fine. Unprofessional sure, but I'm fine with him voicing his opinion. What people have a problem with is his ageist comment of her being "old" at 34 years old. For perspective, one of India's top actresses, Deepika, is 33 years old. Katrina is 36. Sonam is 34. Kareena is 38 Priyanka is 37. Aishwarya is 45. etc. I could go on but you get the point. From what he said it doesn't seem like he was saying, oh women back in my day her age played mother, but rather, going based on his comment alone, it seemed like he was saying that Mahira is too old to be a heroine and should do mother roles instead. Which is messed up and why people are upset.
Things people are saying to defend him are so eyerolling. Who cares if he is an elder, or if he is a respected great actor! He is not God and what he said was not right. Just because of his status we shouldn't take his word as gold. They say he is just voicing his opinion and again, I would agree to that if he had just said she is not a good actor. But then he continued and what he said after was just harmful. Not a feminist but his comment just seemed so sexist when you consider the fact that male actors her age are never in father roles. Just seemed like such a backwards comment when we should be going forward. If I was a Lollywood actor or actress I would feel so embarrassed as this also makes the fraternity look bad.
You can like Mahira or you can hate Mahira. But there is not doubt she has been the top and most known of Pakistani actresses for a long time since Humsafar, which is known outside of Pakistan (which makes me wonder if his comment is influnced in any way by jealous not many outside of Pakistan known who he is but know Mahira) She even was a heroine for King Khan himself and seemed like she would've done more Bolly films until the ban. Now she is doing Lollywood films and instead of encouraging the new gen who are trying to save a struggling industry (as it seems majority of Pakistanis prefer Bollywood films lol ironic) he says this to a key actress? Just not cool.
