Because they have been desperately trying to prove VDW got good opening because of Bebo. Haan Nawabs have been spending crazy amounts on PR.

Kartik wasn't even popular during Pkp2. His dialogue from first film went viral and the first one was a sleeper hit and had a cult following hence the second did well. Kartik stans can calm their asses too because he ain't no big wig yet and I doubt he will be with his lack of talent and mediocre skills and looks.

The kind of stardom he enjoys is very similar to TV stars like KSG, Barun and others (hormonal preteen and teen girls). No diversity in fandom and he isn't appreciated by critics or cinephiles. His fandom is as crass as his personality and movies.

While Karthik was not known as Karthik of today before SKTKS, but I think we cannot deny that his role was the most popular of them all. His monologue was popular with the laundas and laundiyas, SKTKS helped him reach the star status.

Karthik is popular among the youth, and after the success of SKTKS, he has became a name, while I agree with you that PKPN series wasn't hit because of him, nor was SKTKS, but he was the one who gained the most from them. For Luka Chuppi obviously the music worked the most, but after that it was Karthik whose addition to the movie created all the hype.

Kriti on the other hand, despite all the brand success and PR workings, doesn't really have the same ring as Karthik, or even a Ayushmann. Although her PR did the best to make it like BKB was solely about her, even though the one who got the most praise was RKR handsdown.
