I don't see a big deal in fabricating a name at all. Many people change their names to appear ethnically ambiguous or appeal to a wider base. Stage names and pseudonyms have been common in showbiz for eternity.

Farrokh Bulsara became Freddy Mercury. Emilio Estevez kept his Spanish last name, but his father Ramon and brother Carlos anglicized their names.
