I have been ardently watching this show from the very first episode, so have been able to understand what they are trying to show through Naina's character here. Its not that she is not beautiful because she is. We have seen it multiple times: she makes a little bit of effort and her natural beauty shines out flustering boys around her. Be it her opening her hair in school after chewing gum kaand or dressing up on Pooja Di's sangeet or Preeti's new makeover for Naina after she became GS. You know whats common in all three: her devars drooling over her, that behenji who they used to tease, they forget that and get lost in her beauty. The reason people around her in a toxic manner denounce her beauty is because she choses to remain simple (in her own words 'simple, seedhi saadhi' not once she called herself bad looking or ugly ). She has never thought or given weightage to her looks and was always more taken with her studies, hence she was considered unattractive. Similarly Preeti has also been taunted by Bela for not having a good complexion like Pooja Didi. Pooja their eldest sister always put in extra effort on her looks and fair complexion. You see that mentality: if you are fair you are considered beautiful as has been subtly highlighted throughout the length of the show. Sameer is considered more beautiful because he is fair.
But Naina is not fair, has a dimmer complexion so people denounce her. And then Sameer came into her life and saw how beautiful she was in her simplicity. Ever heard the song "chand sitare phool aur khushboo"? The following lines from that song always summed up Sameer's desirous gaze on her for me:
Hai roop mein itna saadapan, to kitna sundar hoga mann
Bin gahnein aur singaar bina vo to lagti hai dulhanEven during Delhi track he admitted that Naina was simple but extremely beautiful. And then came their engagement when Naina actually put so much effort into dressing up, her makeup, her hair everything. Vishaka herself admitted (albeit rather unconsciously) that Naina was beautiful. Something that Somani and Mama themselves had to admit when Naina came out as a dulhan during the phere. So the issue has never been that she is not beautiful, its always been that people around her never saw that beauty because she is very simple in how she dresses and dones herself. But that's who she is and thats the Naina Sameer absolutely fawns over. Because she is his 'pari'.
I for one believe that all girls have something extremely beautiful about them which set them apart like some girls have a beautiful smile or eyes etc. But there are very few girls in this world who have it all which is to say they are heroine like Madhuri Dixit. Someone Naina had seen Sameer drool over. So she wanted her own man to look at her like that not knowing that he held her beauty above everyone else even Madhuri Dixit. If you see she had put more foundation in an effort to look fairer during her shaadi because again Madhuriji has a a very fair complexion.
So here are my last two cents on the issue of Naina' s beauty:
1. Due to her simplicity people overlook her natural beauty.
2. The rather 'fair and lovely' mentality that if you are fair you are beautiful.
