post Ema and Pre Ema was the same Kunal. He still loved his mom post Ema..it was Mauli he didn't love anymore.so. He didn't falter as a son...he faltered as a husband . So it took 7 years ..but then he didn't want Mauli after 7 years...sometimes some men cheat after 2 years...but Kunal held in for 7 years..so time is irrelevant..he still cheated,.maybe if he met nandu after 2 years of marriage he would have cheated then. So pre Ema and post Ema ..Kunal was the same loving son...it was the husband role that he could not maintain,. It's just that it took him 7 years before cheating because that's when he met nandu,,,so he would have cheated anytime ,..if he met nandu 6 months after marriage he would have cheated then...because according to him nandu was his true love. So the main point is nandu was his love ...but Ishaan has proven time and again that Mauli is his true love...
