Instead of thinking what the others will say, he should have the courage to simply tell the truth. This is a young man on the verge of marriage, he must therefore begin to show some maturity. Although I won't hold my breath. Running from the police was immature to say the least.

Yes it was but you have think about his vulnerable state of mind. He is walking on needles here, scared to death that after so much trouble even a single step can stop the wedding. He is so scared he's not in his right mind.

Not telling the truth will just make things worse and could still stop the wedding. When you are between a rock and a hard place, the truth will set you free.
