Hip Hop and Rap isn't everyone's cup of tea. Personally, I am not a fan. Mainstream rap can be very problematic. But I do have some level of respect and recognition to the history of rap and spoken word. Especially street and battle rap.

It originated out of oppression. Victims of racism and discrimination denied a fair shake used these genres as mediums to express their anger and frustration against the system. They sang about drugs, crime, prostitution in their communities and the lack of opportunities. Today, the genre has spread across the world as a medium for youth to express their anger.

One of the most acclaimed movies of 2018 was Bodied based in the LA battle Rap scene. It is also directed by my favorite music video director Joseph Kahn. Its only on YouTube premium - and I don't want to try it out for just one movie. It will be available for purchase someday.

Anyway, I am looking forward to Gully Boy. I knew of Khasi rap in the Northeast, but despite being from Bombay - I had no clue that Bombay has an underground battle rap scene. Since the movie is based on actual rappers - I am curious to learn more. And even though I am no fan of Ranveer - he looks good in the trailer. I have always preferred his stripped down look. And I have to commend his movie choice.

Also, while I love to hate on him because he irritates me at times - I feel he was unfairly picked on for tweeting/commenting coarse rap lyrics. Its part of the genre. I have no clue what the content of the rap in the movie will be - but he's taken a risky move. I think if the movie has similar lyrics it will run into censor issues and he may lose some less devoted fans.

It reminded me of Natalie Portman. She never played a rapper in a movie - but she rapped twice on SNL. Crass. Coarse. The Natalie Portman rap may make Ranveer Blush. and 12 years later when she returned - people who had stopped watching SNL tuned back in to catch it.

So two things - If Natalie Portman can - why can't Ranveer? IMO if he gets into an intense rap character - I'll be impressed. He may have to tap into some of the Khilji energy.
Plus its a fun poll. Natalie vs Ranveer. I pick Natalie of course.

Bonus: Does anyone else think Andy Samberg is timeless?

PS: If you hate rap and any sort of coarseness - that's completely legit. As I said - its not for everyone.

natalie is swearing and being so dirty with words in those rap videos, and then people said wat rs said was so scandalous, natalie in on a popular national television show openly rapping like that, and she is a respected academy award winning actress and a harvard graduate lol

she even said 'all the kids looking upto me can suck my d*ick', and people are laughing at this on the show, so yeh this is how rap is, it can get very dirty and crass, its obviously not something everyone will like but it is part of the music genre

but something i hav noticed is that indians and asian countries are alot more sensitive to such language, the western countries are not sensitive to it, like in america they have the raost regularly and they openly hav rap music that uses such language, in india the AIB roast had FIR's filed against it and yes indian rappers do use such language but they know if they openly did it it wud get a reaction

I like neither :D

I enjoy rap, not too deep into it but do listen ..sometimes when the music and vibe appeals to me, like these two songs from recent times (and clean lyrics to all those who think rap as a genre in itself is 'bad') -

It is not that there is no objection in the west. Many people do object to such content. Wal-Mart does not carry many rap/hip-hop albums and carries only censored versions/radio edits of songs.

I think it is time India and other nations get to a point like - you listen/watch what you like - as long as I don't have to listen/see it or like it.

How can you not like Natalie Portman? 😲😆

Or listen to rap in another language so you don't know what is a bad word and what is not. And when they beep it you don't know why.

Funny censorship story. The US radio stations always beeped A oni govaryat from the song Ya Soshla S Uma. It didn't make sense because it translates to "And they say". Apparently when sung in Russian it sounds like "a n----- varyat" so the radio stations beeped it. 😆 But they play verses in other Russian songs that translate into "be f**king delighted with me" and "i am f**king tired of you" with zero censorship.

I am not into hiphop so not aware of how it actually is... but i was disgusted by seeing the lyrics shared by RS... this is actually bit funny, the word that disgusted me more, was the hindi equivalent of the word 'shit', while i dont cringe with the actual english word usage...same with the 'f' word, i dont use it, but people do, and its kinda become normal, unfortunately...

in above poll I have voted for Veer, cause I like his songs from gullyboy...those lyrics are awesome and he has done an amazing job...

if i were to compare Natalie's rap with Veer's lyrics, I would probably not vote for any / vote for both...as they seem the same...

What a fun topic! And Portman for the win! She has no technique but her expressions and throw make up for it! 😆 This woman is a class apart!

And Andy Samberg is a national treasure. Along with John Mulaney.

You're right about mainstream rap being heavily problematic. We got to know Drake has a secret son through a rap beef. Like 😆 What the eff. Also Nicki-Cardi spat and them supporting abusers too. Kanye's long rants on Twitter. Mainstream rap has lost its core I feel. Earlier rap used to be strictly Crips and Bloods affair which even though was supremely problematic and violent still had street in it which rappers now are losing out on. Street cred. Drake being at top is a massive insult to Tupac and Biggie too lol.

Ugh! Drake is overrated as f**k. He has built a career out of pretending to be the "nice" rapper while in reality, he is the worst misogynist of the lot.

Kanye is a disappointment. There are moments when I feel bad for him because he clearly has mental health issues. So talented. But such a waste of space. Human shit stain. That's what he is. I've hated him since the day he interrupted TayTay. But now everyone is coming around.

The Nicki-Cardi spat is most tragic. I don't mind their support of problematic men. Rap/Hip-Hop is not an easy space for women. What gets me is their beef with each other. Two women somehow make it to the top in a highly misogynistic genre and instead of supporting each other they start sniping and turning into the rap beef stereotypes.

This is why Missy Elliott and Queen Latifah are highly underrated. We don't deserve them. They are real queens.

Mainstream rap in the USA is shite now barring maybe Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. *Most other mainstream rappers lost the plot and forgot where they came from. They started playing into what white people thought was cool and edgy about rap - singing about booty, shawty, drugs and cars. They completely forgot why NWA, Tupac and the likes started rapping in the first place.

Which is why the underground rap scenes like the one in gully boy are the real deal. Sure its not as refined and polished as you get from a studio album. But its people rapping their emotions, letting out whats on their mind, not conforming to what some studio executives think will sell.

Natalie Portman is better than most mainstream rappers IMO. She gets into the skin of the character. And even though its a parody - she's lashing out against all the expectations of list A female celebrities - in some ways its as raw as you can get.

*edited verbiage for clarity
