He wasn't offered the lead role. It was always Ranveer. Zoya wanted him to be the 2nd actor. After Ranbir said no she went to Varun and he also said no.

maybe the part was not meaty enough for rk or varun.

I have read that Ranveer was offered the lead role. RK also lobbied for the role, but Zoya only offered him the other role, not veer's role, and he declined.

Yes I read this few days back but did not want to share on IF due to the necessary bashing ..
