Indi,

I got the glimpse of the first episode, not completely but the the scene where ASR buys Sheesh Mahal and the scene with Anjali on the stage (I'm actually kinda saving these initial episodes gems for some time later!).
I must say there is so much difference in the voice of Barun and Daljeet in the pilot episode. Have you observed that Anjali was using "mein instead of "hum on the stage. I kinda feel the initial inception of the show and the later execution has a lot of changes. yes, she called him arnav, i like mein more than hum... but notice in all hindi serials almost they make women say hum... a slightly weak pronoun, from an earlier age when women were encouraged to know their place i feel... and the hindi serial really is a weapon in the hands of patriarchy more often than not, treating us like things... never individuals. have i ranted enough 😆

About ASR: Right in the initial shot of him after getting out of the chopper looking at the Sheesh Mahal, reminiscing the past, Barun made brilliant job in showing the pain of ASR in his eyes without any action or words. That initial shot of pain in his eyes looking at the deceitful mahal itself was a great work by the makers and the actor. abs agree. it's one of barun's best episodes. gosh that entry. that lifting of eyelids to fix chacha ji with alook. that first "arnav singh raizada ka nishana kabhi nahin chhogta. paisa mera shauq nahin, pesha hai." aaa, it killed me. for some reason it was black and mafia-ish, i even thought of al pacino's michael corleone 😃 i keep hearing how barun was not very good in the initial sequences. i totally disagree. with every look, step, turn of body, lilt of voice, stare, everything, he created arnav singh from the word go, ably assisted by the music director and the initial directors of the show.

Also, since I didn't madly watch the first 20 odd episodes like, I wanted to ask did they have a backstory for ASR's ring? ASR is a simple man with accessories, he doesn't sport auspicious rings like Anjali or Akash but has only one ring, which is the actor's wedding ring (which I can understand, Barun was newly married, hardly 6 months into marriage when the shoot started!). I just wanted to know if they had any backstory to it. I must say it was a bit distracting to see an unmarried ASR with a wedding ring!

no alas, they didn't have a story about the ring. i think asr just wouldn't wear apiece of jewellery, he had that spare elegance, uncluttered, almost austere in some ways. the ring and those fading dhagas on his wrists, i trained myself not to notice them too much.

About Shyam: I never saw the introduction of Shyam in the show, all I read was that he saved Khushi from goons trying to harass her, but never really witnessed the actual scene. Yesterday I watched this VM made by a user named "jalebi girl of Arnav, Khushi & Shyam with Padmavati background music (you should watch it if you haven't already, it's that good). This VM had this intro scene of Shyam. I must say that Shyam got a heroic introduction, like someone who fights for good or something like that. I feel that initially when the show was incepted may be it was around this actual question of "Iss Pyaar Ko Kay Naam Doon? showing the love of both Arnav and Shyam for Khushi on parallel.

didi ki saut and vaidehi were the ideas around which the story was built. it was to be a triangle, between a man who loved his sister deeply and who fell for a girl who had attracted the husband of this siter. so yeah, these parallels were crafted initially. you see them again and again in the early episodes. also the ipk game of introducing the hero as villain and the villain as hero.. that was filmi but nice. and asr was not a sweetheart. oh no. he had his flaws. and he had his power. you had to get a bit knocked off your comfortable sweet girl perch by him. how i lau that mami asr moment in 10. oh, i miss him. watch the first 20, they're abs worth it. kkg's sanka too is totally fresh and hilarious. and my overly gold mami, how utterly cute. nani was far more stern.. they softened her. then there was the mention of a mysterious "dhruv" who never turned up. heheh the story was never not changed. it's dm's blessing thatw e had this tale at all and are still muttering about it.

To elaborate on this point further, I feel the show IS about Didi Ki Sautan and two types of love for a same girl. One which is full of pure passion and hatred from Arnav's side and the other which is full of admiration for beauty from Shyam's side. I believe Shyam is actually smitten by Khushi's beauty and just want to make her his by hook or crook. yeah, genuinely smitten he was. and in initial episodes his portrayal was subtle, you almost felt bad for him. In the episode where ASR sends a typewriter for Khushi to work on, did you see that Shyam was just purely smitten by her like a teenage lover boy rather than being lustful about her.

this was the thing, yes, boyish... but he was all along a married man, and his feelings were lst driven even though he pretended to himdelf, it was this pure enchantment. perhaps that's why, when thwarted, he became as vile as he did, or even to get his own way. hyam was deeply flawed, would have been good to know his back story... that didn't happen.

What I felt is that he just didn't think it was crime to be married to love another person, and always believed that he was in "sacha pyaar with Khushi. When Khushi hit the chords in the hearts of both these boys, each of the boys have a partner, was always an intersting thing to ponder.
Shyam was married but ASR also had a girlfriend, it was not like ASR was single when Khushi dropped into his arms in the pilot. Sure he is not emotionally committed with La, but we can't ignore the fact he did have a girlfriend at that time. Instead of dancing on this fine line of good and bad grey issue, that is questioning what Love is, they took an easier route of making Shyam the villain in the story for the TV audience, is what I feel.

shyam was always going to be the villain. but they could have delved into his motivations and compulsions more and built the character better. they flattened out his character too quickly and took the easy ugly smile and creepy music way out.

yes, asr was not without his girl friend. and though the forum has seen many battles over this issue, i believe he had a physical relationship with la, as people do and have done for a long long time. at least while exploring his feelings for kkg, he does enter that realm of emotions finally when he realises what he's doing is not right... not fair to la. at all. that "main bas aisa hi hoon" moment explores that confusion, the agony... he hadn't a clue what was happening to him, he was also perhaps noting something of his father in him, a lack of integrity, and hating himself for it. we have the most gorgeous break up ever in 142 or around then. asr had decided he'd never fall for a woman... kissi ladki se koi faraq nahin padta. so he had never set out to get attracted to kkg, and when it came at him and he lost control, even then he couldn't fathom what the h it was... it was la, who finally acknowledged what she had seen and tried not to... and made him aware of things. very complex emotions there and i felt they handled that well... but i would have liked to see kkg ponder whether she was being fair to la too... but hindi serial heroines are rarely allowed to get real, given that i must say kkg did pretty well.

just my thoughts.

also, i know we say they changed the story, the characters... and they do so, often in our serials in fact.. think that happens because of the programming structure of the channels, so dependent on constant trp ratings, which in turn get advertiser funds. keeping true to anything becomes a challenge, and the producers are in it more for the money than creative satisfaction... story, writing, characterisation, these are just means to money making, little else. so i guess that integrity we seek is bound not to be there.

Indi,

My further and deeper thoughts on Lavanya, La:

La is a beautiful character. I don't know if they had initial intentions of making her a negative character or something, but she had the most matured and dignified closure a character could get in the whole series.

I always felt that the character of La has not been rightly constructed.

La is to be shown as contrast to Khushi, the modern girl, girl with no emotional baggage, upright, shares the same thoughts with ASR about marriage, and easy-going person. I really like La, she's a simple girl but she was shown as a bimbo to elevate Khushi. That issue bothered me a lot.

The rationale behind this thought is that I do not think ASR would date a bimbo. He is a hard-working person, working like a maniac to make a name for himself and extract revenge from those who have done wrong to him and his sister. So, he doesn't really come across as a person who would date a bimbo for parties or social acceptance. I believe that he was impressed by la, both by her looks and by her brains. Because he does say in one of the initial episodes that she is one of those very few people who has the liberty to waste his 10 minutes of time against his wish. So, I don't think he would give that kind of Liberty to some random bimbo! Yes, I do believe he had a physical relationship with her (which I do not have any issues with, there's no question of judgement on it).

If you observe epi12, the first epi where La is introduced (again I didn't completely watch the episode, I watched just ASR and La scenes in hope of getting to know the background of their relationship, but alas, there wasn't much in it!), she comes out of a convertible sports car (contrast to the stolen-scooter-riding-crazy Khushi), brings a cake for him and
doesn't want ASR to be stressed with her as it would affect his skin!😆She was always trying to relax him, not once but in many situations (like fixing his tie in his cabin, hugging him from behind at night etc., contrast to Khushi who always makes him "pareshan"), also is afraid to speak up against him (again contrast to always giving-it-back Khushi) no wonder he always felt and believed to be under control with her. Even though being with him in a relationship, she never challenged or affected him emotionally and he thought this was perfect as for him "Arnav Singh Raizada ko kisi bhi ladki se koyi farkh nahi padtha!". She was always easy to handle for him (like gifting a bag is enough to please her!).

I believe that he genuinely liked La being with him, genuinely attracted to her charm. Why wouldn't he be, she's an attractive, young, and tall woman. But just to highlight Khushi as this god fearing "sanskari beti", they made her a bimbo for the initial episodes when she comes to live in Shantivan, not standing for herself when being insulted by Nani for
being modern. This bothered me like hell!

ASR really impressed me in two occasions, one when he says to La that she doesn't have to change a bit and can be whatever she already is even after coming to his home (but, Oh! Boy! He did give a half minded reply to her that he likes her the way she already is thinking about Khushi and looking at her stuff in the Office, this boy purely amazes me 😆). The second, when he was talking with Shyam about La, he asks "kya kisi rishtey ki shaadi ke bina koyi izzat nahi? Lavanya koyi respect deserve nahi karthi?" the same question he would ask for Khushi at a much later point of time with his Dadi and Nani. (On a completely side note, this connection of a big brother, trusted friend, and fatherly figure ASR had for his "Jeejaji" Shyam was not completely explored in the series, which would have made it more complex and interesting).

He proved to be a caring person. He cares about the respect La should have while living with him. He always stood up for La in Shantivan. Yet suddenly when Khushi was brought to his house to "teach" La to be an achhi bahu, he doesn't have any qualms or doesn't think it was insulting to La, which was utterly confusing.

The whole idea of teaching how to be a good bahu was a highly regressive idea is what I feel. Sure, I understand that Khushi should be somewhere near to him for their complex love story to be move forward, but the situation could have been handled with much more dignity and grace. Like it could have been La to ask for Khushi's help in winning over Nani while also simultaneously working with ASR in office (may be, we would have got some
more office romance and drama...uff silly wishful thinking of mine!), with her idea being supported by Anjali. May be, it is too much maturity to ask from a Hindi daily soap after all!(Don't get me wrong, I love Khushi, and I root for Arnav and Khushi, but demeaning La for Khushi was what I couldn't take!)

ASR has blurted out "Khushi for "Lavanya not once but innumerable times while talking to his Nani, his Di, and La of all people. Seriously, Khushi and Lavanya are two such different names that can't really be jumbled to be mistaken 😲, yet no one, not even La thinks it is a big issue that he is continuously taking the wrong name instead of hers (except at the last moment leading to their break-up)!

Later La befriending Khushi was handled well, but I felt it was childish for La to do all the silly chunri stuff. But both together trying to crack open ASR on marriage was cute to watch, like two teenage girls trying to fix a match!

When La and Khushi were jumping on the bed with loud music, it felt like two little girls having fun, so pure innocence of both girls, both unknowingly falling for the same man, only to be witnessed by the same man in horror of what is happening with his perfectly in-control, comforting, live-in modern-girl, girlfriend La.

It was also refreshing and beautiful to watch La completely trusting Khushi as a friend, and not doubting on her for a second that she might steal away her boyfriend, nor did she ever feel insecure with the equation Khushi shared with ASR which she herself never had. She always had that trust with Khushi.

ASR always knows that Khushi affected him, but I feel he became sure of her aansoo affecting him only after his confrontation with her about insinuating La with her "shaadi ka ideas.

Did you observe how ASR was looking at Khushi only even while holding his girlfriend with a sprained ankle? May be that is when he knew that this girl has some pull over him and wanted to be rude to her for already interfering much in his life (and for later interfering in the shradh for his parents). It felt like he was cheating on his live-in girlfriend right under her nose, albeit not knowingly though! (Like you said may be that caused
him to tell "mein shayad aisa hi hoon much later to La, that is a man without much integrity)

So was Khushi, Khushi cared about La as a friend too much to know what she was doing when she was trying to bring ASR and La back together. After what she wanted for her friend happened, grief struck her utterly confusing herself and ASR in the process.

Is it being naive or oblivious or trust in her friend that La isn't bothered much when Khushi goes to Nainital instead of herself? Yet the first worry to her mind is that ASR should not know that they planned some romantic things for the trip but not that Khushi is gonna go through all that cheesy stuff herself with "her" ASR instead of herself.😲

Then comes diwali, taking all of their lives for a roller coasterride only to end with a heartbreak for each one of them. Nothing was the same after Diwali like you said.

But I did like the fact that La was genuinely happy for Khushi's engagement with ASR fuming over the same issue.

She doesn't know that Khushi is the reason for ASR's sudden engagement decision, actually I don't think she even bothered to think about the reason as she loved ASR too much to question any logic about their relationship. Even when Khushi convinced Arnav for a delay of week for engagement, something Anjali and herself could not do, she is still not alerted with the influence her friend has on her boyfriend! Like seriously La I thought!😲There were so many instances of Khushi's clear influence over ASR during the engagement preparations, some happened behind her (like the necklace set), and some before her (him apologizing for his rude behavior over Khushi like dress). She knew ASR is clearly getting complicated when she asked him "tum aisa kyun ho?" and later said to Nani "ha Nani, par ab toh aur bhi gussa ho jata hai" the reason unknown to herself! Yet when her ASR came apologizing, she didn't bother to think much and let all the confusion go. Basically, being Anjali-oblivious despite many clues before her.

The beauty in La came out when she was also shipping for Payal and Akash engagement and her decision not to hurt their relationship with her break-up!

But she didn't take much time to come into reality with ASR being much worried about Khushi and least bothered about their own engagement date. That was enough for her to understand what is going on but still didn't want to accept it untill ASR himself came and blurted it out!

Her departure was handled so well with such dignity and elegance that even Akash and Payal couldn't get! 😆

I think I have rambled a lot for today!😆

sneha, 😃

lovely ponder on la.

agree with all the things you point out.

i have always liked la and have marvelled at the way ipk writers presented her, even if yes, there was some unfairness flung at her just to keep either story going or up the image of main lead.

la was not stupid. so making her seem so was irresponsible writing. i can understand adding nuance to a character, but this was ham handed messing with a character. perhaps having created a character that indian soap had really not seen before... or perhaps worried by the chemistry between la and asr, for there was plenty of that... or perhaps on some days they just needed some filler scenes, they were pretty unkind to her.

but really, la managed to handle all that and still had us feeling terrible for her at that moment when he said, "bahut bura lagta mujhe... par main kuch kabhi jaankar nahin karta, khushi, main bas aisa hi hoon, shayad main..."

la heard khushi's name and seemed to freeze. he still had no idea what he's just said... he carriesd on, la can't stop him.

but then, la had to make him stop. for her sake. for his sake. she put her hand on his shoulder.

broke my heart. for la, for asr, for khushi, for this thing we call love.

i think sana got la. and she enjoyed being la, she interpreted her with emotion and integrity, and so no matter how much you tried to make her less, she remained relevant, touching your heart.

i used to seethe at the idea of la being "trained" to be more "bahu" like. the whole moving of la to shantivan and so kkg too, was done to get the romance out of the office to the home... i think i heard somewhere that for the general entertainment channels with their sort of audience, things have to happen in a "family" set up, so no cool ar office 😆, and yes, the shadi must take place within six months, otherwise palpitating aunties of the world wouldn't be able to take it. this is the condescending and shallow target audience reading of most of these channels... so we had the forced wedding.

while they handled the coming of la to shantivan fabulously i just couldn't get over that whole asr saying, i'm leaving... haan, ussi ke paas jaaonga (words to that effect), and finally the solution worked out by the wily shyam and the live in girl friend scenario that "training" of la though made my hackles rise, as it did asr's 😆.

again, it was la's character and sana's portrayal that made it work... she would eat egg which gave her allergy, because she's willing to do anything for him. from that perspective, knowing how much his family means to him (though he says only di matters and the rest don't), also wanting so terribly to be part of his life, i guess one could argue she'd agree to be "trained". thankfully, she rants angrily before giving in.

i was grateful la did not lose all of herself... her deciding she'd give kkg her kind of clothes had me grinning. yeah, la was willing to learn stuff to get what she wanted, but no, she wasn't walking out on herself. she also said very clearly what it was she had learnt and why it was precious.

la was refreshing. she never played "good girl". if she wanted something she went after it. she admitted to her own feelings. she was what she was, and there was a generous, not petty side to her... that paying for all the pizzas casually in an early office episode when sim and pam were out to rag kkg, and she didn't even like kkg.

la also loved asr more than he knew or perhaps even she. which may be one reason why she seemed to miss all the signs of attraction that asr was merilly exhibiting. he had called her khushi back in 80 (was it?), he had over reacted to kkg even earlier in 25 calling la for her phone number at night... la had pointed it out.

"tumhe nahin lag raha tum uss chhotey se employee ko kuch zyada dhyan de rahe ho?"

"enough, lavanya... number!"

but they say, the wife is always the last to find out about a husband's affairs... could it be that when we love someone too much and want them badly in our lives (or are so used to having them in our lives as happens with wives/spouses), we just don't see the obvious because we subconsciously do not wish to?

anyway, she finally did acknowledge what was going on. she went beyond. she understood exactly what this was about... it was about that sabse bada thing. it was about pyaar. this was pyaar.

she had been there... she knew what it was. even if her clever handsome astute and beautiful boyfriend didn't.

writers ultimately couldn't deny la her her place in this love story. or her compassion and the depth of her character.

how many women would walk away with such grace at the moment that la did? and without any rancour, wishing her friend and the man she loved the very best.

oh that scene with khushi... take care of asr.

that was la.

she could call you chamkili. she could be nasty as hell. she could disrespect an elder when drunk and call her gabbar. she could order you around. she could get allergy for you. she could long and agree to change for you. she could apologise. she could go for a party on her own. she could give what mattered most to her to you because she knew that's the way it had to be.

she always had a fear that asr would not be hers, didn't she? for perhaps she knew she never reached beyond a certain layer within him, and she knew there were many many layers beneath that and it was a matter of time before someone got there.

it was not that la didn't matter to asr. just that someone came along and slipped in even deeper. he had not planned for it. and he did all he could not to let it happen. he knew finally, he had not been fair to la... perhaps ever.

when they let la go... the writers seemed to be in a hurry. in a hindi serial evoking such positive and tender emotions for the "other girl" is rarely done, perhaps never... maybe they were scared, it might affect the main love story... i don't know. but la was lovely.

i would have liked to know what happened to her later. i really would.

you're right, asr would have never had such strong feelings for a bimbo. and their relationship had a touching quality to it. so very sweet (and predictably tycoonish) that sending of a bag to say sorry to la... months later, another bag would come along trying to win over another girl he'd really hurt. 😆 asr had that obvious side to him, which made the other, less readable side oh so so very absorbing (i am being very circumspect with my words here hahha).

wrote this in my episode 12 take: i grew to really like this character. mind of her own, many shallownesses, yet a loving side, and extreme wisdom when she realises that the one she loves, loves another. her parting scenes are some of the best i've seen anywhere. also like the slowly growing friendship between her and her opposite, khushi. both girls were special. not stereotypical. each was human, filled with the aspirations of girls their age, time, and place. real people. as long as women are bound and gagged by so called tradition - because, sorry, indian tradition is very very far from what saas bahu serials will have us believe - we have no chance of respecting ourselves or being respected by society. strong words perhaps, but had to be said.

sneha,

see what you made me do. now i can't stop thinking of la. 😆

i am pretty sure i wrote a piece on her... just can't find it. anyway, here's a bit on her from my take on 78...

i'll just leave it here.

then there were two people who began to care for each other, and share interesting man talk.
it was normal for khushi and la not to get along, for in many ways they really belonged to different spheres of everything. yet, they were the same in many ways too, both young girls, both out to make something of their lives, and shaadi seeking or not, both hopeless romantics, hoping to meet the man of their dreams.

inside la there was always the possibility of a conscientious girl: the chamkili whom she so disliked, the moment she saved her from nani's wrath, la acknowledged from her heart, and went straight up to khushi, apologised, made friends. asr is after all not so tsk tsk for liking la. at the same time, without doubt, she was also a girl who understood, "what's in it for me." i respect the writer's instinct regarding la's inner workings. the way to convince her about marriage (if one had to, as khushi for some reason decided she did), was not preaching and lecturing on virtue and stuff. the thing to do was to show her, what she might lose if she didn't insist on the tie. ever pragmatic, la instantly grasped the danger inherent in the live in situation, and went all out to change things to her advantage. shaadi. and whatever it takes to get there. i liked that, stay with the character, don't make her what she's not.

la would ultimately understand things that neither khushi nor asr did. sometimes you don't know the difference between daals, the real name for "round round," and such things, but you are uncannily sharp in other matters. and with one simple act, give what many of us wouldn't ever dream of or even be able to. the man you love to the girl whom you consider a friend. because you can see and you don't look away from truth. there again, a trace of your self preservation, you know this would go nowhere ultimately. but you do indeed wish both these people well. which is why her leaving never felt like a sacrifice. it felt like a person doing what's right. a certain joy in that, just watching it. and a certainty that her life will take her to a good and right place.

as la and khushi got girl talking, there was a lovely ease in the scene. this point on i felt the story became the tale of two girls for a while, both important in their own ways.

la is irritated, khushi is trying to make her feel better. enter... ta ta ra... bayi phrend... "dikhte toh woh bahut hi achhe hain... aur bahut hi raubile kism ke hain... aur kaam? unke ek ishare se saare kaam ho jaate hai, unhe kabhi hath uthane ki zaroorat hi nahin padti..." he looks very good, and he's quite a powerful man, work? oh just a tiny sign from him and everything gets done, doesn't have to lift a finger, he...

must be a senior sort of executive in an important position? counters la, the incorrigible. uh huh. watch out asr, your rival is here. jalebi bai has the dhak dhak for sallu bhai. and you are merely "bhai."

ladki badi hai kamal ki...

but la is still all antsy. no point resisting, khushi brings on her age old remedy of all ills, the vibrant energy of dance that defies all blues, all doom and gloom. some day, la will remember this precious lesson and use it to woo her dear friend. nani would have real reason to change her opinion of la.

fabulous, out of control dance sequence. why did i get the feeling that khushi needed that dance as much as la today. the sexual tension of those early moments, the play of all sorts of things in her mind, she needed to work it all out too.

of course, i got to be in control headmaster face mr we are not amused raizada appeared (just as song reached "lagta hai murga halal ka" and khushi made all appropriate gestures to establish state of murga). the girls yiked to a stop... what is this fear, ladies, uh huh. the angry one glared, but when khushi got a call that brought worry to her voice, somehow it got reflected in his eyes as well, and the little lines on his brow.

the episode ended on two neatly delivered surprises.
1. khushi and payal had an announced visit from amma babuji thanks to an interfering slithery sort.

2. la proposed to asr. now i will forgive this young lady everything, even switching to khushi style clothes, but not this. "asr, will you marry me?" how dare she steal my line.

Indi,
La is such a beautiful, deep and real character in the entire series after Arnav and Khushi that we both wrote so much on her each of our takes having a similar yet deeper perceptions of her! Such a wonderful and real character she is, not flawless yet so lovable.

I would have loved to see how La moved on with her life.

Of course, the whole forum shipped for La and NK despite the characters never having met in the show. The whole forum shipped for their pair didn't we? 😆 May be because both these characters were real, both of them seeing the reality, accepting it.

Oh! Now I think I'm gonna ramble about NK!😆

okay, ready for nk. 😆

la and nk... they just might have been good together. i think la would have had enough of intense tycoons by now and living in kidney she'd surely enjoy... and nk wouldn't have to learn hindi for his la ji. 😆
