Present

Jai looked at the sea of faces before him. It was aggravating him. All of it, the crowd, the journalists, even his family started to get on his nerves. He was tired, restless and miserable. His mood was just like the weather outside. Blistering winds, dark clouds, ominous lighting from the pitch black sky and fat rain drops that battered the people it struck. It reminded him of his life. A life that was once full of laughter, love and sunshine. A life that he had destroyed, for his own selfish reasons.

He asked his driver to fetch him from the back entrance, so that he could evade the press and his family. He felt bad, he should have been there with his family enjoying the success of yet another contract that he had secured. Finally pushing his wealth further up the Forbes Billionaire list.

Jai Walia had it all. Wealth, luxury, status and his gorgeous good looks plus the acumen of one of the most astute and youngest business men in India. To top it all he also had the gorgeous, sexy Pia Dixit as his fiance.

So what was it that irritated him so much. Shutting his eyes, her images came back to him. Big eyes, brown, with specks of green and gold thickly lined with kohl. Her porcelain skin, without a trace of make-up just a hint of lip gloss. Dark black hair that cascaded down to her slim waist. Hands adorned by a plain silver watch, and glass bangles. But it was her smile that had astonished him. When she did, her face broke into the most beautiful smile that he had ever seen. Her lips formed beautifully and parted to expose her perfect set of teeth, whilst her cheeks got lost in the deepest dimples her ever saw. Bani Dixit.

Flashback 3 weeks ago

Bani Dixit was Pia's eldest sister. When Pia had decided to leave Mt Abu after her father's demise Bani was very angry. There was no arguing with her. When the lawyer had read her father's letter, mentioning the Walia's as their guardians, there was no stopping her. Pia had searched every bit of information that she could get from the Internet about the Walia's wealth, and when the Walias offered for the girls to move to Mumbai she grabbed the opportunity.

Bani was upset. She had tried her best to talk to Pia about staying for the rest of the year, so that Rano could finish her final exams. But Pia was adamant. Bani felt the first failure of her promise. Pia had broken the promise to stay together in happiness and sorrow.

With heavy hearts Bani and Rano said their goodbyes to Pia.

Pia stood in front of the Walia mansion and gawked. She had never seen a house like that before. It looked more like an expensive hotel than a family home. When she entered she was even more astounded, smiling cattishly she wished her sisters were there so that she could prove them wrong. This was the life.

The family was huge. (most of the family members except here there is no Saahil and Raashi) But Pia did not bother about them. She had set her sights on the dashing, handsome and extremely wealthy Jai Walia. Pia had arrived. Slowly she had crept into the heart of Jai, first getting a job as his assistant and then placing her self firmly in his heart.

Jai Walia too was smitten with Pia. There was nothing that he did not do for her. He spoilt her rotten. Gifting her with things she only had dreamt about. Dining in the best restaurants and wearing only famous brand labelled clothing. The Walia's were concerned. In his infatuation (because no one saw it as real love except Jai) with her, he had started neglecting everything that was once so important to him. His family, friends and especially his business. More responsibilities were shoved onto Adi and Ranveer, and whilst they did not complain, they could not ignore the fact that should Jai continue in this fashion than it would be to the detriment of his family, himself and the business. The news that Jai wanted to get engaged to Pia came as no surprise to the Walia's.

Bani and Rano were shocked. Bani was upset that Pia had taken such drastic steps without consulting her or asking her advice. She had tried to let Pia see reason. This was just an infatuation for her. She was young and impressionable and loved luxury, but she was not seeing the bigger picture. The Walia's were way above their league.

Despite Bani's advice she had went ahead and she and Jai had announced their engagement. Bani felt very responsible. There was only one person that she could reason with and that was Jai Walia himself.

Jai was swivelling in his huge leather chair. Aimlessly looking at some documents that Ranveer had asked him to sign. But his mind was somewhere else. In fact it was once again about Pia. Last night she had surprised him with a candle lit dinner at his beach house, and as usual she had looked absolutely ravishing. In a red and very alluring dress. They had spent the night flirting and kissing like there was no tomorrow. Many a times he wanted to make love to her there and then, and he sensed that she too wanted the same. But he held back, he knew that it would be just a matter of a couple of days until she was totally his.

Still drooling of the visions of Pia in her sexy dress, he failed to hear the shrill ring of the telephone, until his secretary Eva came in to ask him to answer.

Jai hello Jai Walia speaking.

Bani: Mr Walia I am Bani Dixit, Pia's elder sister.

Jai: Hello Bani. What can I do for you?

Bani: Actually Mr Walia I called to speak to you about Pia.

Jai: Instantly sitting up. Yes go on, he said.

Bani: Mr Walia I know that you and Pia are going to be engaged soon, and I am very happy for you, but, she hesitated.

Jai: Go on, Bani what is it that you want to say.

Bani: Mr Walia, Pia is a very immature girl. She was always thinking of better and bigger things in life that we could never afford. And it is this concern that I have that perhaps she is too young to get serious so soon…..

Jai: Suddenly getting very annoyed. Another nay sayer he thought. Why is it that no-one wanted his happiness. First his family, then his best friends and now Pia's own sister.

Look Miss Bani Dixit, firstly you have no idea who the real Pia is. She is far more matured than the farm girl that you make her out to be. Second she has every right to want the best things in life, because she deserves it, she deserves love, luxury and happiness. What have you got against that Miss Bani? Or is it that you are jealous that being younger she is getting what you would have perceived to be your right first? Or is it that you fear that you could never be like her and will remain a spinster in the backward Mt Abu that you come from?

Bani: too getting angry at his insolent remarks and tone.

Mr Walia, I have no issues with Pia wanting the best and getting the best. Yes you are right, she deserves it. But don't you dare insinuate that I am jealous of my sisters good fortune. I am who I am, and no I did not for once perceive or expect to get what Pia or for that matter Rano were destined to get. Everyone comes with their own destiny and fate. As far as remaining in backward Mt Abu and being a spinster it does not bother me at all. Like I said before, you get what is set out in your destiny. Correct I do not possess the good looks that Pia has, once again all five fingers cannot be the same can they?

From the age of 16 I had brought up my sisters, to the best of my ability, and as a mother I would want only the best for them. My reason to call you was that I know Pia too well. She gets carried away very easily and like the changing of the seasons, Pia too changes her dreams and aspirations. Mr Walia you are 10 years her senior, I expected you to be a bit more mature, and at least wait until Pia is 21 to take such a drastic step. But it seems that you too have made up your mind, so who am I too change it now.

By now the anger had reached a point of no return for Bani and as she spoke her eyes become red and moist, and as hard as she tried, she could not escape the flow of tears, that were streaming down her face.

Jai: look Miss Bani, I am in no mood for your verbal rhetoric about how much you sacrificed for your sisters, that is something that you had no choice about. You say that I am mature and should know better, well I do know better and therefore have taken this "mature" decision (stressing the word Mature). Yes you are no-one to change mine or Pia's mind Miss Bani, if you knew any better Pia is past 18, and according to the law she is already considered an adult. Your interference is not appreciated.

Rano: Mr Walia who the hell are you to talk to my Banidi like that? Rano had taken the phone from Bani when she collapsed on the floor crying her heart out.

Jai: and who the hell are you to question me?

Rano: I am Rano Dixit, Pia's and Bani's youngest sister.

Jai: well then if I can speak to the eldest sister in that way I certainly can the youngest.

Rano: Mr Walia I am not Pia who is a self-centred person, neither am I Banidi who is sitting here too shocked to re-act to the things that you have accused her off. I have a mind of my own too, and right now my mind tells me that you are an arrogant and rude person, who thinks he knows it all. Well let me tell you Mr Walia if you can make assumptions about my Banidi without even meeting her than I can do so too.

Being wealthy is no excuse to be rude and arrogant which you clearly are. Banidi was being cautious about Pia hurting herself and more so hurting your family and you. But you know what looks like you and Pia have the same temperament and self-centred agendas, and I regret the fact that I encouraged my Banidi to call you. For your information neither am I jealous of Pia's looks nor her apparent social status and all the wealth you can bestow on her. You are despicable Mr Walia and I look forward to the day when you see my Banidi's beauty, grace and respect.

Jai Walia sat speechless as the phone was unceremoniously slammed in his ear.

Looking up he saw that Aditya had entered the office. Aditya had only heard Jai's side of the conversation and looked at him in anger.

Rano's speech kept on playing in his mind. No one had ever dared to stand up to him and more especially call him names and slam the phone down on him. Although he was seething in anger, he had to admit that he was quite taken by her no nonsense attitude and confidence. He also realised that Rano never called Bani, Bani it was always Banidi, and it appeared that her di was her everything. But it was the quite demeanour and slightly husky voice of Bani that intrigued him, and as his tirade against her started, he could distinctly hear her sharp intake of breath, and the teary voice that broke when she finally ended her speech.

Over the months Jai had heard nothing more from Pia's sisters. The fact that Pia did not mention anything at all to Jai, meant that the sisters had kept to their word and stayed away from interfering in her life. Somehow Jai felt bad. He recalled the disturbed and angry look that Adi had given him when he had spoken to Bani and Rano and it was since that day that Adi had kept his distance from Jai and Pia.

He had offered no assistance and advice on Jai's personal life, and had kept strictly to business matters.

Aditya sat in the front row of the packed auditorium. He was so proud of the girls. Despite their hardships they had never stretched out their arms for support from others. Aditya loved the girls like his own. After all Nishikant was his best friend too. He chuckled to himself, making Bani look at him in wonder.

Bani: why are you laughing Adi uncle?

Aditya: Bani today I have a lot of well wishers.

Bani: so what is wrong with that Adi uncle, after all you are one of the senior directors at WGC.

Aditya: no it is not that Bani you see today I am with the most beautiful girl in this function apart of course from Rano who is on stage.

Bani: puzzled who Uncle Adi she enquired.

Adi: you

Bani: blushing, Adi uncle you always say the right things to make me happy don't you?

Adi: no Bani beta I speak only the truth. You are a very stunning girl. I wish you always be happy and you realise your dreams and ambitions too. I am proud of you girls. Look at Rano, she has passed her exams taking top marks, and she has secured her place in the Mumbai university. And you Bani. Completing an MBA, running a house, taking care of Rano is not an easy task. Especially for one as young as you. How I wished that my Anu too could be so responsible and mature like you girls.

Bani: Uncle Adi, if it where not for you Rano and I would have no one to turn to in Mumbai. I don't know why you took us under your wing, but Rano and I look up to you as a father figure not an outsider, cried Bani.

Rano: yes and as a father you get to see my certificates first, Adi uncle, said Rano hugging him from behind.

Adi: you girls stop it. It is my greatest gift that I have you to take care off. It is very difficult to have children and yet not have children he said sadly.

Rano: but uncle Adi, why did you contact us. We thought that the whole Walia family saw Banidi and I as Pia and Jai haters?

Adi: No Rano do not think that for a second. All the Walia family and I do not see you like that, and I am sure that once you meet the others you will see that I am right.

Bani: Well uncle Adi, nothing to worry about there, as I will never come to that house. Maybe Rano but not me.

Rano: Banidi how well do you know me? I can never forget the hateful things that Mr Jai Walia said to you, and I. I have my pride too you know , she argued getting quite flustered.

Adi: Rano beta you have chosen the right profession, I can only imagine what you are going to do to the criminals in the courts if you are fighting against them, he cried.

Adi did not want to mention to the girls that he had overheard Jai's conversation to the them all those months ago, and had decided that at least he will keep an eye on the sisters. When he did finally get to meet them, he wished with all his heart that Jai was with. Jai would have realised that whatever he had accused them of was so untrue. More so he would have been shocked to realise that the beauty that Bani and Rano had far surpassed that of Pia, and further despite his impression of Bani being a spinster, he would have been amazed to see that Bani had far more admirers than she cared to give the time of day to.

No, the great Jai Walia was so wrong this time.

Rano and Bani settled into their comfortable apartment that they managed to find. Again they had refused Adi uncles help and found one of their own. Although the rent was high, it was closest to all the amenities and bus stop. This made it easier for the girls to go to varsity and work. Bani had found a job in a small construction company.

Mr Khan was a kind old man. He had built the business from scratch and had worked very hard to maintain it. His reputation was impeccable, and it showed in the manner in how he treated his staff. He had the best architects and project managers available to him, and although he did not pay them any where close to their market rate, they stayed because of this.

But Bani had studied business administration and accounts, and it was quite clear to her that the company was not doing well at all. She loved Mr Khan just as she loved Adi uncle, and the staff had soon become the family to her and Rano that they never had. One day after much discussion with the staff, she had come up with the idea that it was time that he outsourced his companies resources too much bigger corporations. She was confident that as a team the talent that the company had could only bring them to greater successes. Mr Khan had nothing to lose. He sourced information as to who where starting new projects and had convinced some of the companies to let his team do the project administration, planning and advertising. All they needed to do was the financing.

The house was abuzz with activity. It was the weekend of Jai and Pia's engagement and the celebration of Pia's 21st birthday. Pia was over the moon. She had engaged the services of the most expensive beauty parlour in Mumbai to enhance her beauty. She had commissioned the best designers to make special outfits to her specifications and had ordered food from the most expensive restaurants.

She wanted nothing to go wrong and thus the servants found themselves being ordered around and shouted at.

The family could only stand back and watch. No one dared say a thing that would earn Jai's wrath on them. Pia had made her position in the family very clear to the rest of them, and no one bothered to prove her other wise. After all this was Jai's house and they were at his mercy!.

But Jai was not as enthusiastic as he was supposed to be. Over the months he had become increasingly aware of his families distance from him and this had disturbed him a lot. He was very fond of his family and especially Massi who had taken care of him when his mom died. No longer did she insist on talking to him long into the night when she was bored, nor did she question him about things that clearly bothered her. Even when Jai asked her about her advise on the preparations she politely told him to do what ever made Pia happy. He knew that what ever she had suggested Pia had disagreed. Dadi too kept mostly to herself and preferred to be in her room watching her movies that too half heartedly.

Maasi's traditional food was replaced with shop bought food. Her sweet meats were put aside as all Pia's friends were dieting. The beautiful stair case that Anu had decorated with flowers and roses were removed and replaced with fairy lights. Pia wanted her engagement to be the talk of the town and she achieved just that.

Jai turned when he heard a slight ruffling at his door. Massi stood there tears in her eyes.

Massi: Jai beta, I know that Pia does not want traditional things and ceremonies , but I wanted to bless you and therefore I brought the pooja thali to your room. Is that ok, she pleaded.

Jai was hurt. The woman who had every right to instruct him to do things was now asking his permission for even a blessing. Fighting back tears Massi did what she had to and left, a heavy lump forming in her throat.

Jai was torn apart, on one side was his family and on the other Pia. He was caught with a raging war in his conscience and heart. Why did his family not want to see him happy? Why did Pia not try harder to embrace his family. It was obvious that the Walia's did not approve of Pia for Jai, but there was never a time when they were rude to her. They had always included her in everything that they did, if not for anything then just for his sake. Yet Pia on the other hand always rebuffed their attempts, always making excuses of some party or function that Jai and her had to attend too.

It was only on this day, the most important day in his life (or so he thought) did realisation hit him. In an attempt to find love, he had forsaken all other relationships, and for the first time Jai felt unsure of whether he had made the right decision. Standing on the balcony of his room, he looked up into the dark sky, and wished that some divine intervention would help him. He was lonely, he needed to talk to someone and share his misgivings and concerns, but Aditya too had backed away from him. As Jai turned away from the skies he failed to see a bright shooting star. Some where someone was looking out for him.

Rano and Bani grappled with thoughts of their own. The invitation lay on the coffee table between them. Both were quite adamant that they would not attend. However it was once again Adi uncle that had convinced them to go. He knew that the sisters wanted nothing to do with this occasion, especially after the way Jai had spoken to them and Pia's lack of respect for her own family. In all these months Pia never once tried to contact her sisters, despite knowing that Bani and Rano had moved to Mumbai too. But Adi explained to them that they should be bigger than Pia and irrespective of what happens you cannot throw family away. After much arguing to and fro Bani and Rano decided to go. They would make their appearance and leave immediately. (they had no idea that this was not going to happen).

Jai looked down from the top of the staircase. The hall was decorated beautifully, but there was something lacking, and as much as he tried to he could not place a finger on it.

Bani and Rano were dropped off at the entrance of the Walia Mansion, unlike Pia the sisters were not taken by the house at all. They reasoned that being one of the wealthiest people in India this was expected. Grabbing each other's had tightly they made their way towards the large French doors into a world that they had no desire to step into.

Tony opened the door after the first buzz. More stuffy, false friends, in designer clothes and tons of make-up that you needed a spade to scrape off he grumbled before opening the door. But what he saw surprised him. There they were two beautiful young girls, standing in obedience in front of him, greeting him in the traditional Indian way and asking him permission to get in. Tony stood with his mouth opened. He could not believe that he was treated with such respect.

Seeing that Tony just stood at the door, prompted Aditya to take a look and was excited to see that it was none other then Bani and Rano.

Aditya: arre Tony why are you standing like that, let the guests come in. come on Bani, Rano and welcome.

The girls greeted Adi uncle happily. Both hesitated in coming into the house. Understanding their dilemma he took both by the arms and walked them into the party. Bani and Rano looked around nervously. There were in a place that was strange and unknown to them. There was not a soul that they knew there and had latched on more firmly to Adi.

They noticed that Adi uncle was taking them away from the main area and walked towards a group of people that were all seated together. Much to their dismay looking bored and uninterested. Massi looked up first and wondered who were these girls that Aditya was holding, looking fondly at them. Beaming he brought them towards massi. Massi, Ma this is Bani and Rano. The girls greeted them traditionally, bending down to touch the elders feet. Massi and Dadi were impressed. They were so simple, and each beautiful in their own right. But Bani was something else. Although extremely beautiful she had the quite grace of a real lady nothing like the snobbish models she saw parading around the room.

One could only imagine the shock and disbelief the group felt when Aditya informed them that Bani and Rano were indeed Pia's sisters.

While still looking at the girls in amazement and mentally comparing them to Pia a sudden hush fell onto the room. Bani and Rano looked up to see what caused the silence when they saw Pia descending the stairs. She was looking very beautiful. In an emerald green and silver sari. Beautiful matching jewellery accentuated her sari even more. Her hair a shimmering mane of curls bouncing softly as she walked. She looked confident and proud. Why wouldn't she after all she was getting engaged to "the Jai Walia" . as she reached the last step she was surrounded by giggling and shrieking girls, rushing forward to compliment her on her looks and clothing.

Bani and Rano stood at the edge of the crowd. They hardly recognised their sister. She had grown. She looked stunning that was something that they could not dispute, it was no wonder that she had captivated Jai Walia's heart. Amongst the many beautiful women that he had dated, perhaps it was only Pia that had secured him. Bani was happy for her sister, perhaps she was wrong after all. Pia was certainly in the right place.

Rano also acknowledged her sisters beauty and luck, but she also saw what Banidi refused to see, there was a certain haughtiness and pride in Pia. Pia suddenly looked up and saw her sisters. Excusing herself from her friends she made her way toward them. It was so long that she had seen them she realised. Rano had matured so much, and was looking so gorgeous. But her Banidi, quiet, reserved Banidi was looking absolutely stunning. Pia had never seen her Banidi in a sari before and looking at her now she had done full justice to it.

No words were needed. They hugged, kissed and congratulated her. Despite how hurt they were they made sure that Pia would be happy.

Jai Walia walked down the staircase non-chantilly. He acknowledged the congratulations and well-wishers rather absent mindedly. He was more focussed on the person that was hugging Pia. Her back was turned to him. All he could see was a curtain of black shining sleek hair that cascaded to her slim waist. The black and cerise pink sari, draped gracefully around her perfect shape. When she moved her hair swung aside, revealing a cerise pink blouse, slightly moving to reveal smooth peachy skin.

Pia looked up at that precise moment and saw Jai. He was walking in a daze towards her and although she smiled at him, he did not return her smile, how could he when his eyes were riveted to the back of that beautiful blouse. Bani sensed that Pia moved away from her, standing a bit back she saw Pia smiling from ear to ear.

Pia; hi Jai wow you look dashing, she said.

But Jai was not listening.

Pia: Turning Bani around slowly she said, Jai my sister Bani.

Jai stood speechless. The person that turned around to him took his breath away.

Big eyes, brown, with specks of green and gold thickly lined with kohl, looked up to him. Her porcelain skin, without a trace of make-up just a hint of lip gloss dazzled him. Her hands were adorned by a plain silver watch, and glass bangles in cerise and black that jingled as she moved about. Little tear drops of black earrings adorned her perfect face But it was her smile that had astonished him. When she did, her face broke into the most beautiful smile that he had ever seen. Her lips formed beautifully and parted to expose her perfect set of teeth, whilst her cheeks got lost in the deepest dimples her ever saw.

Jai Walia stood speechless in front of the most exquisite woman he had ever seen. Yes Pia was beautiful, but she was different. Pia possessed pizzazz and fun, whilst Bani had grace and humility.

Extending his hand to greet her he was surprised that she did not accept it, instead she folded her hands in a traditional manner and just as soon as her smile appeared it had died away.

Bani: hello Mr Walia.

Jai: her voice jolted him to reality, Bani Walia? The same Bani that he had so mercilessly insulted? He called her an old spinster, unattractive. My god how wrong could he ever be? Still recovering from Bani's vision Pia pulled forwards another young girl, just as good looking, a blend of Bani and Pia.

Unsmilingly she greeted him.

Rano: Mr Walia is all she said, not extending her hand neither folding her palms.

The rest of the evening went off better than Rano and Bani expected. Although Pia showed no interest in spending time with them and instead with her high society friends, it was Aditya uncle, Anu, Massi and Dadi that occupied them, and made them feel welcome. Rano was thoroughly enjoying gossiping with Anu. While Bani indulged in the attention that Massi and dadi were showering on her. However there was one particular person standing silently, watching a scene unfolding in front of him that he had for so many months longed to see. His beloved Massi and family, laughing, and joking. Breaking into impromptu dances when the music caught their attention. Smiling to himself he never let his eyes move away from the people responsible for this, Bani and Rano. But it was Bani that his eyes seared through.

Moving towards the group he caught her voice once again:

Bani: Rano please lets go. It is getting late.

Jai stopped in his tracks, no not now. Not so soon he prayed.

Rano: Ok Banidi.

Massi looked at Jai. Not only had she caught him staring at Bani all evening, she also noticed the disappointment on his face, when they decided to leave. A secretive smile crept up on her face. I hope Jai is thinking what I want too, she hoped.

Massi: no Bani this is not right, you are going so early? you and Rano did not even eat anything? Please come, she commanded playfully.

Bani: Massi no it is too late, however seeing the disappointment on massi face she scolded massi. Massi what must I eat, here is only shop food, where is the laddoo's she mocked.

Massi: her day was made, rushing into the kitchen she fetched that large tray of ladoo and as everyone indulged themselves, Bani told her that it was now that her evening was made.

An hour later it was really time for them to leave. Pia said her goodbyes hurriedly and went back to the friends she left behind. As the rest of the family bade them well, Jai escorted them outside. Bani sensed that she was being followed and turned around. On seeing Jai so close, Bani's pent up anger rose. All evening she had totally ignored him, she knew that he was keeping a close watch on her and Rano, but she chose to ignore it. She was far too cultured to make a happy occasion into a mud slinging affair.

Jai: Bani, Rano please wait, he begged.

Look I am so sorry to have behaved with you in that manner, and I hope that you will forgive me. Please do not be strangers to this family. Pia will appreciate it and it is obvious that my family have embraced you as well.

Bani looked on incredulously, how dare he. How dare this man stand in front of her and casually tell her to forgive him. What did he say? She was jealous, she was unattractive, and she was backward. Her anger was threatening to boil over.

Bani: and what about you Mr Walia? Will you change your mind about Rano and I. that we are not the backward, gold digging, and jealous people that you made us out to be? And as for Pia, she hardly acknowledged our presence here today. It seems that her friends mean more to her than Rano and I do. We came because Adi uncle forced us too. Besides we are responsible enough to forgive Pia and agreed to share this day with her. Just so that she does not feel alone and without family. But as you can see she is managing just fine. Jai was stunned.

Thanks to you Mr Walia that she has found herself in a society that she always wanted to belong too. As for the family, we appreciate them, especially since they are elders and we were deprived of that in our lives. Yes especially me Mr Walia who as you said had no choice in being the one responsible for Rano and Pia, but for once this family made me feel like it was ok, to be young and free. Even if it was just a few hours.

Rano did not interrupt her Banidi, she was proud that she had found a voice to express the hurt that she had harboured for so long. Jai Walia deserved every sarcastic remark that Bani meted out to him.

And by the way Mr Walia, Bani continued. It was not a pleasure being here. It was painful to see my own flesh and blood, embarrassed to be around us. It was painful to be in the same room knowing what the owner of this house felt about us. It was painful to see that my soon to be brother in law, was standing watching us from every corner. Did you think we would steal the silver? It is even more painful Mr Walia, that you stand here today, and so casually ask us to forgive you.

We had lost more than what Pia had gained MR Walia. We lost a sister, a family unit. A family that only had themselves to rely on. I am very happy for you and Pia Mr Walia, but Pia came from the same background as we did, we shared the same difficulties, hopes and dreams that she had. What I wanted to achieve for me, was the same as what I wanted for Rano and Pia alike. I never made comparisons between us. I never suggested that one deserves more than the other.

But you did not appreciate that did you?. You passed judgement on us without giving me a chance to explain. You accused me of the vilest things without seeing the bigger picture did you. For you it was all about Pia and you. What you wanted, and what you assumed Pia was entitled too.

At what cost Mr Walia, at what cost?. It pains me to see Pia today, she shows no respect for her family, and her elders. Today I see a self-centred Pia that has no place in her heart for anyone except you and this life-style.

I was not selfish Mr Walia, I was avoiding a situation that I knew was long in the making. Pia is ambitious and fickle. I turned to you for help. I wanted you to understand and make Pia see reason. I had no intention of standing between you two but I had hoped that you could first let Pia grow up. Learn about life and regard for other people.

But you have successfully destroyed that Mr Walia, by bad mouthing her family and listening to her, conceding to all her whims and fancies you have not only destroyed your own family but you had destroyed the possibility of making her see beyond her own needs and desires.

I hope with all my heart Mr Walia that your heart is big enough for her, and that your resources are boundless to keep her happy. I hope that your love will be enough for her to have only you in her world, because from what I have seen she has alienated everybody else. Lastly Mr Walia, I ask for only one thing, before you pass judgement on anyone else in future, think of the repercussions on them and yourself.

Without waiting for a response Bani got into the taxi. Rano was right beside her when she finally broke down crying.

Jai Walia stood for the longest time. Bani's word rang in his ears. His conscience was screaming for him to take note of what she said. He ought to be angry with her, but she had raised such valid points. Yes, in his quest for possessing Pia he had ignored all the signals that were sent to him. She was right, he had lost his family, his values and his ethics. Thinking back on how unhappy his family were, and his strained relationship with Adi jolted him. Like a zombie he walked up the stairs. Holding the balustrade for support. Jai surveyed the happenings below. What he saw pained him. The happy atmosphere of his family was gone once Bani and Rano left. Pia was still socialising amongst her friends. He studied her for a long while. He noticed that she made no attempt to mingle with his staff and less wealthy friends, people that he valued and cared about. Instead she was in the company of high society snobs that he tried his best to stay away from.

Dejectedly he walked towards the only place of silence and peace he knew.

His study was large, shelves of books lined the huge walls, a massive oak desk was placed in front of the large French doors, and two huge leather armchairs stood in front of the desk. On one side there was a little bar stacked with Jai's favourite drinks, and a couch, that he rested on when he was too tired to go back to his room. Pouring himself a strong drink, Jai lay down on the coach and closed his eyes.

Bani's speech still reverberated in his mind. Everything she accused him off was true, he had indulged Pia, he had turned his back from reality, and he saw only what he wanted to see. Yes he had irrevocably destroyed all the good work that Bani had done and was still going to do in instilling respect and humility to her sisters. By admonishing Bani and Rano he had given the impression to Pia that she was right, in her actions and therefore she was now free to do what she wanted to do. Jai's un- wavering support for her, had allowed her to turn her back on her family and had even allowed her to treat his family indifferently.

Aditya saw Jai enter his study, he had heard the showdown between Jai and Bani. Although he agreed with whatever Bani had said, the utter look of shock, amazement and remorsefulness displayed by Jai could not be ignored. Despite everything Jai was his best friend, and with much trepidation he entered the lions den.

The room was plunged in darkness. The moonlight just creeping through the slits of the partly opened curtains. Adjusting his eyes to the darkness, Aditya found Jai, sprawled on his back, twirling the glass of scotch around.

Jai: I have messed up didn't I?

Aditya: Jai perhaps Bani was a bit harsh, he explained knowing full well that it was a lie.

Jai: don't be kind Aditya. I am to blame. I had been so blinded by love that I failed to see everything else around. Actually was it love Adi?

Aditya: Jai, sometimes it is very difficult to separate infatuation from love. Both feelings are surreal, and all consuming. However you need to ask yourself, that what does it mean to you?. An infatuation is something that makes you irrational, you only see the benefits that affect you and the other person. Nothing and no one matters to you. Peoples opinions about you do not affect you at all. You become indifferent to the world, your family and even your responsibilities. You refuse to see the bigger picture.

True love on the other hand is when you find a soul mate. A person that can understand you long before you can say anything. A person that wants to share in what makes you happy. A person that allows you to be yourself, and share in your sorrows. That person that you can look at from across a crowded room and have a conversation with your eyes only. The person that can evoke such passions in you that you could mountains for. When sacrifice for each other is not sacrifice but an act of love.

Jai already knew who that person was. She had captured his heart from the moment she turned around to see him. God she was the first no second woman first being Rano that had the sheer audacity to tell him off. He smiled, despite his misery. What do they say " dynamite comes in small packages"? she was small alright he sighed.

Present

Bani and Rano had decided to spoil themselves and plan the long holiday that they so badly needed. Having saved enough they decided to go shopping. Rano had almost outgrown all her clothing and Bani' s wardrobe looked as though the Red Cross too would not accept it!. It was such a new feeling to them. For once they could buy beautiful things without worrying about the budget. Having no clue what to buy, a kind assistant took the girls and piled clothes for them to try on. Whilst Rano was a bit adventurous Bani was still conservative. But Rano's and the assistants pleading forced her to buy some modern clothes, clothes she knew that would be wasted. The absolute limit was the swimsuit that Rano picked for Bani. Although it was a full piece, the back had a cut out circle held by a large silver ring. The front was not so revealing although it did show a little bit of skin and the same ringed circle exposed her neat belly button. Bani felt scandalised. But there was no stopping Rano she was on a roll. Bani too did not want to say anything, it was after so many days that she had seen her baby sister smile and enjoy herself, so she may as well sit with unsuitable clothing than to burst Rano's bubble.

Adi' laughed at Jai's forlorn look. He guessed that the man was never the same from the day of his engagement and his showdown with Bani and Rano. But it was not anger that he was seeing, it was a lost miserable look, Adi knew what it was but did not want to push the subject.

He had caught Jai on many occasions making discreet enquiries about Bani. Where she worked, lived and spent her days with. Imagine his surprise when he learned that Massi, dadi and Anu met regularly with them for meals or tea. They never mentioned anything to him. Why would they anyway, wasn't he the reason they did not come to WM.

Are you absolutely sure that you are not coming to the farmhouse Jai, asked his massi for the millionth time.

No. no. no Massi I have far too much work, besides Adi will be there, Ranveer and the others. Pia is in London (not that it matters he muttered). This is the best chance to catch up with work.

Ok then, I have cooked extra for you, and Tony will warm them up.

Don't fret massi I will be fine.

Anyway it is good that you are not coming. Bani and a Rano will need the extra room, offered Massi coyly.

What Massi, say that again. Who would need the spare room?.

Why Jai, did I not tell you that Bani and Rano are joining us. Bani did not want to but when Dadi started her filmi dialogue and how little time she has left in this world, why Bani melted like butter. Amazing isn't it beta, she said mischievously.

Jai was stumped. Bani was going to be there, and he just blew his chance out of the water. Actually Massi, he cried, maybe I do need a little break. However please don't expect me to be involved in your fun and games, I will be working away you know, he unconvincingly lied.

Massi knew better.

But Jai the spare room for the girls? Let me phone them and tell them that they must not ………..

No massi he shouted, they can come really it is no problem, I will share the lounge with Ranveer really, it's fine.

What are you going about Jai, I was going to phone and tell them not to forget their extra blankets…….

The relief on Jai's face was so apparent that it did not escape massi and Adi. And both smiled knowingly.

It was the fasted packing that he could do. Tony stood by speechless, never had he seen his boss so flustered. Clothes were flying out of the cupboards, shoes were being looked for, Tony tried to help but Jai wouldn't let him. There was no way he was going to be left behind. A giggle escaped Tony, as a truly dishevelled Mr Walia hurried down the staircase, clutching a half closed case and his laptop. Adi noticed that no company files accompanied Jai.

While Ranveer gathered the family in his Range Rover, massi rode with Jai. To his immense delight he was ordered to pick Bani and Rano up.

The girls waited patiently. Suddenly Bani felt anxiety creep over her. Suddenly she felt like she no longer wanted to go. She so badly wanted to say so but the excitement and impatient Rano was not allowing her to say anything. Instead she too waited.

They are here cried Rano, running toward the door. Before Massi could get her finger to the doorbell the door flew open and Rano nearly collided with Massi.

Are Rano you are very excited, yes massi come on. What Rano could not see was the spanking new silver Mercedes that stood in front of their flat.

As soon as she saw Jai Walia her mood changed. Her Banidi will never go now. Neither would she. After the last showdown with this man, she never thought that she will lay eyes on him again. And if he was there Pia was bound to be there too. Sensing Rano's hesitation, Massi explained to the girls that Jai was only giving them a lift, and although he will be there he will be working all the time and will never be in their way. Half satisfied the girls agreed. Massi turned heaven words and apologised to God for lying so much for her beloved Munna.

He adjusted the mirror so that she was in his vision. She wore a simple peach sleeveless Punjabi suit, her dupatta flung casually around her neck. Her hands were full of peach glass bangles, and a tiny pair of drop earrings adorned her ears. She wore no make-up at all except the clear lip gloss that defined her lips to perfection. But it was her eyes that he was drawn too. It was such an unusual combination of green, gold and brown, sometimes flecks of gold too. A thin layer of khol shielded them and when she looked down her long lashes hid them behind their black curtain. On more than one occasion Jai nearly drove off the road.

Bani was aware of Jai's scrutiny and it flustered her. Where she expected him to be angry and horrible toward her and Rano he had remained quite and observant. But it was his constant eyes on her that she found so confusing. Perhaps he was not happy that they were coming with, but then why did he come for them then, she wondered.

When Jai looked in the rear view mirror again she had dozed off. He noticed that her dupatta had slid off her neck onto her lap, and left her neck exposed. Small beads of perspiration were beginning to form on her chest, Jai did not want to put on the aircon as massi did not like it and it became too cold anyway. So he slid down the window slightly on Bani's side from his controls and a soft breeze blew in. it was the worst thing he could have done 😳
