I completely agree! You know, people continuously ask me, "gurrrl why do you still watch this show if you hate it so much?!" And the reason is simple:
1) I wasted 4 years of my life on it. At this point I feel obligated to see it through right down to its awful, mind-numbing, bitter end.
AND 2) also because of Kundali Bhagya. You see when I get invested in something I go into it deep. See: the Marvel movies, The DC movies, Vampire Diaires which spun off into The Originals which spun off into Legacies. I watch it all. I'm OCD like that. I can't help it. It's the way I'm built. And I do blame myself for it.
But atleast even when Kundali Bhagya drags, and it does for took pointers from it's Mother show afterall -- atleast there I have characters like Preeta (when she's not Prithvi worshipping) Srishti, Sameer, Karan, Rishab (when he doesn't act lovesick), Kritika, Rockstar Daadi, Janki, Sarla (when she's not Prithvi worshipping), Rakhi, Mahesh, and Bani Daadi to love. In Kundali I have a litany of characters to adore...in Kumkum the only person that I feel sorry for right now is King. And if he turns evil like the rumors are suggesting, then I will have no one to root for. Because honestly, who the heck do you root for in this show????
Do you root for Pragya? 😆 She doesn't even know what she wants. One minute she goes from remembering how Abhi banished her from his life and getting all worked up into a tizzy over it and then in the next instance she's very obviously heart-eyeing Abhi but then turns around and tells Tanu that she has no interest in him. She has inner monologues where she says "Tanu is the reason we can't get back together since you married her," when thinking about Abhi to suddenly panicking and thinking, " Abhi can never find out Kiara is his! He'll TAKE her from me!!!" W*F?!? Ummm, Pragya do you want Abhi back or not? Either you want him back in which case, go right ahead and tell him so. Tell him that Kiara is his daughter. Tell him how King took you both in and is nothing more than a friend to you. Why are you not telling Abhi any of this? oh because he's married? Well you somehow found it in you to tell him that you loved him when he was dating Tanu. Oh remember that? You his wife telling him you loved him while he was dating Tanu. That was practice, now it's you his baby mama telling him that he's a father while he's married to Tanu. Or wait...are you not telling Abhi you want him back because he tossed you out of his life and called you a pariah? You mean that wasn't romantic enough for you? Maybe you'll get luckier this time. and Abhi can find out Kiara is his after Tanu somehow has her killed, and he can again blame you for her death this time around. Doesn't that just make your heart flutter Pragya? I'm sorry. But if you're terrified a man will snatch your child from you -- how the heck can you possibly love him? How can you forgive him for marrying his mistress? But she does still love him and she has forgiven him for marrying Tanu because if she was disgusted by it she would not be Nok-Jhoking it up with him on the sly...and I'm supposed to believe that Tanu is the other woman in this story. 😒
Then there's Abhi... why on earth would viewers still root for him to be paired with the female lead? No seriously? I dare you to go explain the abhigya relationship to a non-viewer. I DARE YOU. I guarantee it, you will completely humiliate yourself. You'll sound like a five year old, standing in front of a classroom being told to tell an impromptu story on the spot, and it'll look a little something like this:
KKB VIEWER: There was this boy and he is a rockstar and he made his best friend like his sister but his best friend did not like the rockstar's sister and the sister got mad and thought the best friend liked a teacher but no boys ever liked the teacher and then one day the teacher fell into the water and the rockstar saved her and then she married the rockstar but the rockstar did not love her and told her he hates her and would punish her and he would hug another girl to make her sad but then the teacher found out the rockstar's sister liked his best friend but the best friend was dating her sister and then she stays quiet and tells the best friend to marry the rockstar's sister and then the best friend runs away from the rockstar's sister and tells the teachers sister that he loves her but then that sister dies and he marries a villiage girl and then the rockstar's sister blames the teacher for everything but the teacher told the rockstar she loved him and he tells her he loves her too but then the girl he hugged got pregnant and so the teacher tells the rockstar she does not love him and he has to go hug that girl again and then they all find out that the girl he hugged lied and the baby wasn't his but then the baby died and then the rockstar loses his memory but then he gets it back and then the teacher gets shot and goes missing and the rockstar sits at home and cries for her and then this other girl shows up looking like the teacher but he thinks it's the teacher but then that girl leaves and the teacher comes back and then this other girl shows up wanting to kill the rockstar because he killed her husband but she kills the rockstar's grandma instead and then the rockstar blames the teacher and tells her to leave and then the teacher leaves for 7 years but then she comes back with a friend and the rockstar hates the friend. But then there is a little girl and the rockstar and the little girl become friends.
NON VIEWER: Dude. Why don't you just watch Young and the Restless.
KKB VIEWER: Because people kiss on the mouth in that show and my mom says were are too sanskari for that.
That right there, is what you will sound like. THAT is what people hear when you explain this show to them,
It's also important to note 2 things:
1) Abhi and Pragya lived together for 4 years. She has lived with King for 7.
2) Why is everyone okay with a 7 year old girl hanging out with a middle aged man. I mean, we the viewers know differently but for Pragya and King - should this not be alarming. And I'm talking about how Pragya seemed okay with this long before she found out Superman was Abhi. I know that if I went home and told my mom that some old guy is my new best friend and I call him Superman and I think he's my parttime Dad, she would freak. Actually, she does freak. She made faces whenever Pragya would giggle with Kiara over her doll-thief. A mother's response would have been to call the cops, not to send her daughter off to play with him.
But anyways, back to Abhi. Why am I supposed to feel sorry for him? He brought Tanu into his life. He let his sister cause havoc but never got her any real help. Aaliya needs a hospital and some good old treatment. She needs a therapist and she does not need to watch Purab and Disha romance in front of her. What was Abhi's reasoning behind keeping Purab and Disha in his house? Oh right. "I don't want you to leave me the way Pragya did." Nice. So he wants Purab in his house because he is lonely. He takes Aaliya back but rubs Dishrab in her face and expects her not to go crazy. He lets Tanu rule the roost because why not, and has Disha do everything a servant would. And on top of that he also wants Pragya back too.
We're also led to believe he's all about family. Yeah, okay:
- he adds to sister's mental problems by adding salt to her wounds in the form of Dishrab.
- he thinks his niece is a minor when she is not.
- he's a rockstar and makes a S#!& ton of money but is clueless as to why Uncle-basically a grandpa- Ajay drags himself to the office.
- He makes kids call him Chucks.
- He marries evil incarnate and somehow is not aware that she tortures his family members on a daily basis. (sidenote: Although, one could argue that Tanu was the daughter-in-law that Mehra's always deserved. Pragya's life was hell with these people. Swarni Daadi was Awol. Disha is new. Purab forgot his oath to his dead wife. Mitali, Raj and Raj's mother were always her enemies. Raj's father spent most of his time blending into furniture. Indu Dassi was kept in the dark. Daadi used her as a weapon and always had her risking her life and fighting useless battles. And Bubbly and her brother were away at boarding school. Pragya was an outsider to most of these people. So why the rewrite in history?)
- He also acts as though he is bipolar: He goes from acting like a caveman but hiccups and suddenly acts like he's 5 years old. I once found this childlike behavior endearing but him and Pragya's random kindergarten nok-jhok-babblings are now a slow torture. This gag ran its course during the 3rd year of the show. It's especially confusing to watch it happening now considering the storyline.
You know what's also HELLLAAA confusing! The flashbacks. When in the holy frickitty-frack would any of the crap that we see moonlighting as flashback, when could any of this have happened. We the viewers know that during Abhi and Pragya's four year marriage the duo have only had four days of happiness:
1) the night he told her he loved her
2) the night Mogambo died
3) the night he got his memory back
4) and the night Kiara was made
Atleast in Kundali Bhagya the flashbacks we get a majority of the time is a refresher. It's stuff we've actually seen already being recaped. And even when it's a brand new never before scene atleast it makes sense within the general scope of the show because unlike Pragya -- her sisters actually see, talk and are cordial with all the guys within their orbit. Abhi spends an entire year stuck hating her until the two of them get their one day of allotted togetherness before being ripped apart.
4 days of happiness in a relationship that spans 11 years? Wow! And yet the two of them think they can lecture Tarun and Neha on what a serious relationship is. This is the epic love story two teenagers look up too? This is the relationship Bulbul lost her life for?
Kudos to Sriti and Shabbir for having had the chemistry to have originally reeled me into this mess of a love story. Because 4 years later, now that the haze has lifted all thanks to the dwindling writing I now find myself scratching my head and wondering why I even shipped such an unhealthy relationship to begin with.
