Just curious: Bollywood's #MeToo

I have been surfing the Bollywood forum site since yesterday, and time and again it has been said by members of the forum and the celebrities themselves in interviews, that MeToo isn't plausible in Bollywood. So wanted to know WHY, really?

UK = 2014/2015 The UK gained insight in to the horror filled lives of the likes of Jimmy Savile, Davis Lee Travis, BBC, ex-politicians etc between 1960-1990's. It was a nationwide witch-hunt to find perpetrators, find and shame being the motto, if possible arrest and jail. Most of them unfortunately are dead, however the so-called honoured celebrities were exposed (all of whom were recognised for exemplary work by the Queen, knighthood etc). Davis was jailed and some others, regardless of age (over 70) which is the right thing to do. The government also ran an investigation into BBC (huge government run channel); whom knew of the reality of their presenters, actors etc. Heavy fines were due since authorities of the channel ignored or disregarded allegations made by young individuals (boy and girls).

2018 There's a charity set up by British actresses which focuses on victims, reports suggest more than a 1million has been given to sexual harassment victims and sentencing have been sanctioned.

Hollywood's #MeToo we all know about Harvey Weinstein and its effect, again so many offenders were highlighted and actions are in procedure. Way before KeSha also accused her producer.

China's #MeToo unfortunately didn't gain no substantial coverage, however is slowly gaining some international grounds. The country does observe a no tolerance policy were foreign media is concerned; but 20 woman apparently have come forward with their accounts on different men.

In India several names have come forward, actors/musicians/producers etc, but it seems way more prevalent. Most of the named are low-key and interviews of Tanushree and Imran Khan suggest biggies are also involved.

I mean if Weinstein was caught out and he's a huge name, then why can't it be similar in Bollywood? Also why is Bollywood and politics intertwined, makes things far more complicated?

I suppose what i am also asking is, what makes bollywood different than the other industries even if the old and dead perpetrators are named like in the UK, then atleast hundreds of other woman find a voice to support and maybe share their own experience against more recent offenders?

Because I think in Bollywood it's way more prevalent and that behavior was normalized for years. It's that hush hush culture everyone talks about. If this movement actually continues to move up the Bollywood ladder, it will unravel everything. Coz most of the stars would be involved I think.

Weinstein was taken down because his own brother wanted him out so he could take over the company. It's possible some big producer would go down in India too.
Even in HW, I highly doubt all the big names came out. Same will happen in India.

Three big reasons-

1. Most people are completely oblivious to the concept of consent. So they think only molestation and rape constitute sexual assault. Believe me, I was appalled when I read comments on YT under Tanushree Dutta and other #metoo stories videos, that supported this line of thought.

2. Lots of biggies are involved and in India big BW stars and Cricketers are worshipped. They have crazy fan following. So, would people really buy it?

3. Way too easy to buy goons to threaten and even kill the accuser in India compared to the west. Law and order is much more corrupt here than in the West. So, most people have no faith in the justice system at all.

Despite all of that, women are coming out and speaking up. I find that absolutely amazing!!! I was literally astounded by Tanushree Dutt calling out Raj Thackeray! I mean that hooligan and his cronies rule Mumbai?! How is she not afraid?! All of these women are really brave, to say the least.

  • How many MLAs,MPs are involves in scams or criminal cases ?
  • How long did salman khan case tool? Is he guilty or innocent?
  • How many politicians have blamed the victims' clothes as the reason for their rape?

Pritey ZInda once said that underworld is threatening her. She is no small star. Some of the people in BW 'might' be have underworld connections.Forget underworld.some of them have connections with local politicans or even the Prime Minister.(Virat/Anushka wedding reception)

These few dominant people are in power. And BW is a place thriving on Nepotism. They know each other, hire each other and enjoy the profits among each other and grow wealthy. If one comes downs, it's more likely all of them will come out. Unlike HW, where what happens to Weinstein doesn't affect Speiberg or Nolan. In Bollywood, What happens to a Karan Johar is more likely to be happening to an Aditya Chopra. They are very close together and have closer relations. They are more likely to protect each other than throwing one cat out of the bag only.

Now who is in a better place to defend themselves with the best attorney, a big superstar or a background dancer? These celebs have so much pride, lots of them even avoid tax. They make so much money and still get away with tax avoidance- some big names can even come up.

Legal proceedings take time to process in India(see Salman Khan's) cases.
Celebrity/Politicians worshiping is the real deal in India. Some fans would probably take a bullet for their celebs as well as bully anyone who voices against them. Easy to shame the victims.

We are still a patriarchal society where men are supposed to be the stronger one. What kind of comments would a guy get if he comes out as a victim?

Going against the big fishes, would require more than just one woman. Just like they did for Weinstein, all the women should group collectively and the find evidence or share their story about the accuser. Most of the victims in BW might be the junior artists and the ones without connections.
That being said, we do not know how many of these women know about the movement?

The victims have a lot more to go through- the shaming, the celeb worshippers or maybe the financial limitations. But this is the time to remove all of the pretentious masks of these so-called artists. I wish the women and men good luck. They have a tougher road.

Still in India, Hindi-movie industry has big media coverage. What about the South Industry or Bhojpuri? The movement should reach there too.

But will they? I doubt it.

Say hypothetically...one top actress has faced it. Her time in the sun is fading as stardom does.sooner or later especially in a workplace so driven by ephemeral looks, figure and age.

There is a newer one coming up in the background who faces the same harrassment and whatnot. She speaks up. Do you thijk the older actress who may have faced it will offer her support? Or just let it go. Or even worse join the wrong side to bring the up and comer down?

I don't know how much you are acquainted with Hollywood. Just read about Uma Thurman ( who is a big name) and how she was treated by Weinstein and Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino made Pulp Fiction- a classic in history and Kill Bill series. He is considered a great director and he made her a star. But what did he do, made a real car crash in a scene that hurt her physically and as well he SPIT on her.

Is this a good treatment from such a 'great' director?

Again the reasons for a victim to stay silent is a lot. But with #me too they are having many other people to talk about their assaults and they are not alone.

And we might write and speak, but what happens to the victims and the trauma ,only those who have been through it knows. So many years these women had to stay in silence, being mentally and physically tortured and now they have the support to come out, they should.

And i don't think that this movement has to deal with age and stuffs. It is time for victims to put the criminal behind bars.

@- This is becoming more and more prominent with the recent articles on SRK's friends and the Houseful director. it reminds me of how Meryl Streep acted unaware to the whole Harvey Weinstein incident. Ofcourse she knew, they all know. Gossip doesn't float in a day.

However remarable the Golden Globe speech was however it makes you wonder about its authencity. Was she really moved orsimply jumping onto a reformation 'of sort' that everyone wants to be part of?

No no alot people were spared, which is unfortunate but i hope the #MeToo impacts all showbiz industries (since it seems at rife there), I remember after Savile most of the high profiles here were acting so out of their skin. These offenders need to know, there's a judicial system. However corrupt or biased it may be, but it is there for the wider population and not just to protect their back-handed criminal affairs.

As for Weinstein, he had it coming even if it was applied by Bob. The fact still remains big Hollywood names were added like Jennifer lawrence, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Uma Thurman etc
