I have been surfing the Bollywood forum site since yesterday, and time and again it has been said by members of the forum and the celebrities themselves in interviews, that MeToo isn't plausible in Bollywood. So wanted to know WHY, really?
UK = 2014/2015 The UK gained insight in to the horror filled lives of the likes of Jimmy Savile, Davis Lee Travis, BBC, ex-politicians etc between 1960-1990's. It was a nationwide witch-hunt to find perpetrators, find and shame being the motto, if possible arrest and jail. Most of them unfortunately are dead, however the so-called honoured celebrities were exposed (all of whom were recognised for exemplary work by the Queen, knighthood etc). Davis was jailed and some others, regardless of age (over 70) which is the right thing to do. The government also ran an investigation into BBC (huge government run channel); whom knew of the reality of their presenters, actors etc. Heavy fines were due since authorities of the channel ignored or disregarded allegations made by young individuals (boy and girls).
2018 There's a charity set up by British actresses which focuses on victims, reports suggest more than a 1million has been given to sexual harassment victims and sentencing have been sanctioned.
Hollywood's #MeToo we all know about Harvey Weinstein and its effect, again so many offenders were highlighted and actions are in procedure. Way before KeSha also accused her producer.
China's #MeToo unfortunately didn't gain no substantial coverage, however is slowly gaining some international grounds. The country does observe a no tolerance policy were foreign media is concerned; but 20 woman apparently have come forward with their accounts on different men.
In India several names have come forward, actors/musicians/producers etc, but it seems way more prevalent. Most of the named are low-key and interviews of Tanushree and Imran Khan suggest biggies are also involved.
I mean if Weinstein was caught out and he's a huge name, then why can't it be similar in Bollywood? Also why is Bollywood and politics intertwined, makes things far more complicated?
I suppose what i am also asking is, what makes bollywood different than the other industries even if the old and dead perpetrators are named like in the UK, then atleast hundreds of other woman find a voice to support and maybe share their own experience against more recent offenders?
PS: Btw 1st ever visit here, so please go easy lol
