Zoya had been Adi's friend before he realised he loved her but as u said that friend is scared he will loose his love if he doesn't step out of friend zone. At this point in time Zoya doesn't have any romantic feelings for Adi. It's not like she is deliberately stopping herself from loving Adi. It's just that she is not there yet. Adi needs to realise that only this friend can make Zoya realise her feelings and allow that to happen in her comfort zone. In AdiJa's case I don't think they were in love n they both assumed them being best friends was sufficient to make them work their marriage out. I guess with ZoSh it was a whirlwind romance, the kind they call love at first sight but that never allows u to see beyond that love n u never bother understanding the other person. It's like I love them n that's enough. So I guess u need both friendship and love. But the natural progression is from friendship to love. It's a matter of time before Zoya realises this too.
