Movie Review: Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi

  • BOLLYWOOD HUNGAMA NEWS NETWORK

Every year, we have had sleeper hits that come out of nowhere and turn out to be surprise successes. HAPPY BHAG JAYEGI was easily the dark horse of 2016. It released with minimal buzz and ended up doing decent business at the box office. Audiences loved the humour quotient a lot which helped the film sustain and even have a recall value two years later. The makers are now back with the sequel, HAPPY PHIRR BHAG JAYEGI and promises to be better or as funny as the first part. So does it manage to live upto the expectations? Or does it fail in its endeavour? Let's analyse.HAPPY PHIRR BHAG JAYEGI is the story of mistaken identity that takes place in the neighbouring country of China. Harpreet Kaur aka Happy # 1 (Diana Penty) is accompanying her hubby Guddu (Ali Fazal) to Shanghai in China where the latter is invited to sing at an event. In the same flight, Harpreet Kaur aka Happy # 2 (Sonakshi Sinha) is also flying to Shanghai to find Aman Singh Wadhwa (Aparshakti Khurana) who was to marry her but ditched and flew to China on the wedding day. Happy # 2 mistakenly takes the cab that had come to pick up Happy # 1. It is learnt at this point that Guddu has been tricked into coming to China by Chang (Jason Than). They want to kidnap Guddu and then force Happy # 1 to go to Pakistan, meet her friend Bilal (Abhay Deol) and compel his father to get into a business deal that he had promised to fulfill but had later cancelled. Sadly for Chang and his men, they got Happy # 2. With no other option, they are forced to kidnap Daman Singh Bagga (Jimmy Sheirgill) from India and inspector Usman Afridi (Piyush Mishra) from Pakistan and force them into finding Happy # 1 and take her to Pakistan. Happy # 2 meanwhile runs away from the clutches of Chang and bumps into Khushwant Singh Gill aka Khushi, a sardar who works at the Indian embassy. He decides to help Happy # 2. Usman and Bagga too manage to get free from Chang's hold and they team up with Khushi and Happy # 2. What happens next forms the rest of the film.
Mudassar Aziz's story is based on a wafer thin plot and doesn't have much logic in it but the humor makes up for it. Mudassar Aziz's screenplay is engaging but one wishes he had done something about the loose ends. The scene where Usman gets horny on seeing the semi naked girls doesn't really induce laughter. Mudassar Aziz's dialogues are hilarious and witty. Dialogues had been the mainstay of the first part as well and in the sequel, they are funnier. At some places, it'll pleasantly surprise you. For instance, the DANGAL reference is killer!
Mudassar Aziz's direction is simple and uncomplicated. He uses a bit of a non-linear style in the beginning and it works very well. In the midst of fun and laughter, he inserts the somewhat sad flashback sequence of Happy # 2 and yet it engages viewers. It's also thanks to his direction that the glitches in the script get overpowered to a great extent.
HAPPY PHIRR BHAG JAYEGI doesn't waste time and the story starts to move forward from the first scene itself. The misunderstanding owing to the name is neatly established. The real fun begins once Bagga and Usman enter the narrative. Their interactions are hilarious and take the film to another level. One of the funniest scenes is the madness that happens in Khushi's house when Chang arrives with Usman and Bagga. The flashback portion of Happy # 2 keeps the interest alive. The drama at the adult toy centre and the prison is not that funny but makes for an interesting watch. Also the film slips in the middle of the second half. But it picks up well in the pre climax. Watch out for the escalator sequence here; hilarious! The climax might be a bit underwhelming but has some funny moments. The film ends on a positive and 'Happy' note.
All the actors do a very commendable job. But it's Jimmy Sheirgill and Piyush Mishra who take the cake. Jimmy Sheirgill is the soul of this series. By now he's become a pro in playing roles of guys who don't get the girl in the end. But he does it endearingly and it's a treat to see that. Piyush Mishra comes next. He also contributes a lot to the funny quotient of the film. In the adult toy centre sequence, he is too good. Sonakshi Sinha delivers a very able performance. She completely looks the part and in some sequences, she dominates beautifully. Jassi Gill enters the series and even Bollywood with no expectations. However he turns out to be a nice surprise. Watch out for him in the scene where he starts blabbering nonsense while in shock. It's sure to bring the house down! Diana Penty and Ali Fazal hardly have anything to do initially but give their best shot in the last 20 minutes. Jason Tham is an actor to watch out for. Denzil Smith (Adnan Chow) essays a novel and a never before seen character and is very impressive. Aparshakti Khurana leaves a mark but only in the second half. The actors playing Happy # 2's father and sister are decent.
Sohail Sen's music doesn't work. The title song is the best of the lot. 'Swag Saha Nahi Jaye' comes next. 'Kudiye Ni Tere' is forced but stands out as it's a rare song in today's times sung by Udit Narayan. 'Koi Gal Nahi' is a forgettable composition but incorporating two Chinese men singing a Hindi song is funny! 'Chin Chin Chu' appears during the end credits. Sohail Sen's background score however is much better and suits the film's quirky mood.
Sunil Patel's cinematography is sans complaints. Aparna Raina and Sheena Saini's production design is realistic. Divya Nidhhi and Ipshita Bhatnagar's costumes are authentic and appealing. Ninad Khanolkar's editing is slick but gets a bit dragging in the second half.
On the whole, HAPPY PHIRR BHAG JAYEGI turns out to be a worthy sequel. Despite the loose ends, it manages to make audiences laugh thanks to its funny dialogues and situations, clean humour and bravura performances. At the box office, it will turn out to be a decent fare.

What's Bad: The story gets dragged in the second half & songs are forced

Loo Break: Strictly during the songs

Watch or Not?: Even if you haven't watched the part 1, watch this to go back and watch the first one

Harpreet Kaur aka Happy (Sonakshi Sinha) is an aspiring Horticulture professor and leaves for China to do the job. Facing some issues at home, her father is unaware about her location. In China, a set of bad guys are waiting for another Happy (Diana Penty) which is also about to land with her singer' husband Guddu (Ali Fazal). Both the Happy(s) pick up the wrong driver & their fate gets turned.

The bad guys are looking for Happy No.1 (Diana Penty) but they pick up Happy No. 2 (Sonakshi Sinha). The Horticulture college people pick up Happy No. 1 (Diana Penty) and Guddu. The story gets interesting when Daman Singh Bhagga (Jimmy Sheirgill) and Usman Afridi (Piyush Mishra) also get abducted to come and find the real happy in China. This comedy of errors continue unfolding many unknown aspects to the story introducing many characters, mainly Khushwant Singh Gill (Jassi Gill).

Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi Movie Review: Script Analysis

Dialogues by Mudassar Aziz are among the main reasons for which this film will work. Of course, Jimmy Sheirgill and Piyush Mishra top the reasons of why you shouldn't miss this film. The Indo-Pak & Indo-China jokes are so smartly placed & brilliantly written, you'd laugh even after hearing them for multiple times. Great performances + unmissable dialogues makes this a level higher than part 1 for me.

Its prequel also was highly dependent on dialogues and performances but Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi made me laugh throughout. The one liners were there at regular interval & that's why there wasn't any space for boredom to enter. Audience will grab this as a time-pass, fun & entertaining watch; it has everything you need from a light hearted comedy. Second half could've been better but one will easily overlook it given the many cheerful things the film has.

Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi Movie Review: Star Performance

Jimmy Sheirgill is the sher' of the film. He's totally in a zone where he knows no one can touch him. Maintaining a proper mixture of swag, charm & amuse, he's too funny for words. Piyush Mishra is god level! This man can do ANYTHING. He complements Jimmy so well, the next part in the franchise should be titled as Kaylula Aur Bagga'.

Sonakshi Sinha brings in freshness with her portrayal of happy. These were risky shoes to fill because Happy still is Diana for everyone. Sona jumps in & never for a second disappoints. Jassi Gill surprises big time! He shares few of very hilarious scenes & leaves his mark. He's a charmer amongst the ladies also has a added touch of comical relief (Another Diljit for Bollywood?).

Aparshakti Khurrana comes in as a delightful surprise and has a meaty role. He, too, manages to gather many laughs. Jeeveshu Ahluwalia there was a smile on my face the minute I saw him on screen (fan spotted). He's good in his short appearance though I wished to see more of him.

Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi Movie Review: Direction, Music

Mudassar Aziz had a very limited scope when it came to explore the template from the first film. He manages to add some clever writing in order to execute this comedy of errors. There are places where the direction is very good but also there are few misses in the second half. Aziz should more be appreciated for a writer than the director in this one.

Sohail Sen's soundtrack is a pretty forgettable one. Happy Bhag Jayegi had some very underrated gems in songs but here they come as an obstruction. Apart from the title track none of them clicks. The background score is weaved very well with the story line. The Chinese touch to the score goes well with the scenes.

Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is one of those films in which you can have fun with your entire family. It has moments which will make you laugh even if you're watching it for the nth time on television years from now. Whatever is the fate of this film, I want a spin-off film of Bagga & Kaylula.

Three and a half stars!

Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi, Movie Review: Kinda Nice, Lekin Bas! Phirr Mat Bhagna!

Vickey Lalwani

Sonakshi Sinha returns to form, but the film could have struck better notes with humour. It's fine but not wow. Give me the first one- any day, any time

***

Exactly 2 years have passed to Happy Bhag Jayegi, but I still remember the first one rather vividly. I don't think I shall retain such strong memories when it comes to the second. Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is funny but kinda. It drags a bit especially closer to the interval and even for few minutes after it- before the captain Mudassar Aziz eventually steers the ship to safety. You will come out from the film with a smile, but it will soon fade away as you reach the parking lot. A lot of jokes are forced and fall flat, and even anti-racist dialogues keep springing up for some strange reason. That's not funny, is it?

First things first. The premise of the film, by which I mean why Sonakshi Sinha (the new Happy) runs away from home, is rather weak. Won't reveal it, but let me tell you that her 'Mission Accomplished' too turns out to be quite an anti-climax, or let's say, a damp squib. Is the music good? Kinda. Sohail Sen could have done a better job with his tunes.

Thankfully, the second half has a lot more scenes which are better etched out. The last 45 minutes deserve praise. It's tight here and a good mumbo-jumbo as well. It is the first half that largely disappoints, and there is a bit of too much hurry to take the plot to China. And then, it suddenly slows down.

Praises in order. First up is Piyush Mishra; he is superb, this man is something special. Was terrific as the wry Pakistani cop in the first part, doesn't drop the guard now. Ali Fazal doesn't have much scope. The focus has shifted to Jassi Gill. But does Jassi come out with flying colours? No. Gill needs to improve a lot. He is blank in few scenes and expressive in some. Lacks consistency. Abhay Deol, where were you?

Diana Penty looks ravishing. Acts well, dolls up well. Sonakshi Sinha has lost lots of weight and does full justice to her character. Shotgun Sinha's daughter is definitely scoring brownie points in this one, unlike some of her past few releases which were nothing but rank bad choices. Welcome back, Sonakshi.

Aziz should have spent some more time in writing the script. He has taken 2 years anyway to come up with the second instalment. Should have toiled harder to get the right punch in every frame. So yeah, like the pace, the humour too is inconsistent. You might not get a constant grin on your face, which you do when you enjoy a comedy thoroughly.

Jimmy Shergill goes over the top and having seen him a few weeks back in Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster, I think he is trying too hard to be needlessly cocky in every frame. Hamming? Kinda. Repetitive? Kinda. The whole thing should have been more aziz to Aziz, he has tried to convert it into a franchise after all.

The long and short of Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is that the overall teamwork lifts it to a respectable level, but the captain hasn't led from the front.

Liked it? Kinda.

I am pushing myself to THREE, an extra half for Mishra, Sinha and Penty put together.

HAPPY PHIRR BHAG JAYEGI MOVIE REVIEW

  • TIMES OF INDIA
Rachit Gupta, Aug 24, 2018, 12.16 AM ISTCritic's Rating: 3.5/5

Story: Horticulture professor Happy (Sonakshi Sinha) arrives in Shanghai and the other Happy (Diana Penty) along with husband Guddu (Ali Fazal) also lands up in the Chinese city at the same time. Gangsters who've come to kidnap Happy and her husband, pick up the wrong Happy, while Guddu and his wife Happy are escorted to a university to deliver a lecture.
Review: Comedy of errors is one of the oldest tricks in the filmmaking business. It's always fun to watch, people caught up in extraordinary circumstances behaving like simpletons. And that's exactly why Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi (HPBJ) is such a fun film. It works on the same themes and ideas that made its predecessor, Happy Bhag Jayegi (HBJ) such a laugh riot. The writing and direction by Mudassar Aziz are top notch. HPBJ has delightfully random humour, the kind that you can watch over and over again.

The film wastes no time in establishing the premise. The two Happys get interchanged as soon as the film begins. Sonakshi Sinha's Happy is kidnapped by a bunch of bumbling gangsters who have hilarious names like Makaju (pronounced like a popular Hindi expletive). Diana Penty's Happy and her husband Guddu are escorted to a college, where a random Chinese man acting as their translator employs such chaste Hindi that it bamboozles the Punjabi couple. These random bits of humour set the tone for the rest of the film, that plays out in a series of gags and situational humour set pieces, that are genuinely hilarious. Once the characters of Bagga (Jimmy Sheirgill), Usmaan Bhai (Piyush Mishra) and Khushi (Jassie Gill) get introduced, the film's pace and humour picks up to a whole new level. But an extra word of appreciation for actors Denzil Smith and Jason Tham, who play the Chinese characters. Denzil plays Adnan Chau and Jason is Chan, the leader of the gangsters. Both actors excel in the scenes of outrageous comedy.

Mudassar Aziz has managed to blend funny Punjabi dialogues in the Chinese setting of the film and the outcome is downright hilarious. The writing of HPBJ is its strength, the gags and scenes have been written with genuine alacrity. The film could have been a tad bit shorter with taut editing, but that doesn't really affect the prospects too much. The performances by the ensemble cast are pitch perfect, but the one actor who stands out with his comedic timing is Jimmy Sheirgill. His character has many quirks and the actor delivers every single dialogue with disarming charm. Sonakshi Sinha as the feisty and spirited Happy, is very good too. Aparshakti Khurrana, in a brief but surprising role, creates a good impact too.

HPBJ is just as good as HBJ, if not better. It has good music too and for a change, the songs actually add value to the storytelling process. This film takes the ideas of the original and it adds a zany new twist to the proceedings. The goofball humour gets a little over-the-top at times, but that's exactly what works for this madcap comedy.

Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi' is Just a Test of How Easily You Giggle

By Stutee Ghosh
August 24, 2018 at 10:45 AM IST

Thanks to Geet's character from Jab We Met, Bollywood has regurgitated this bubbly heroine' formula a number of times sadly, never managing to reach its original level of brilliance.

Happy Bhag Jayegi that released in 2016 had Diana Penty playing the eponymous character who is also named Happy just in case she forgets to channelise her inner happiness! Runaway bride Happy crossed the border to Pakistan and spends her time frolicking with three eligible candidates Daman Singh Bagga, the local muscleman (Jimmy Shergill); Guddu (Ali Fazal), the good for nothing musician; and the suave Pakistani businessman's son Bilal Ahmed (Abhay Deol).

It was a typically average film with some crowd-pleasing jokes, and a bit of fun.

Now, the latest installment called Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi forces writer-director Mudassar Aziz to come up with an overwrought premise to justify the presence of another Happy (it's Sonakshi Sinha this time) who lands up in padosi desh China. What follows? Chaos, confusion, some racism, a little bit of homophobia and inanities like constantly saying names like "Maka Ju and "Fa Qu.

We are supposed to get a kick seeing a Chinese kidnapper speak in chaste Hindi and our desis repeatedly saying how "every Chinese looks the same. Dear China, consider this our badla for meddling in Arunachal Pradesh!

It isn't as though this is unwatchable. The first half is a lark with our usual suspects capering around each other. Jimmy Shergill repeats his "main ghodi chadd gaya tha a little too many times, but it's still funny. And while Piyush Mishra's typical dialogue delivery has turned into memes, his "Urdu talaffuzz can still garner laughs.

Joining the motley crew is Punjabi singer Jassi Gill who makes his Bollywood debut here. He is a sardarji who works at the Embassy in Shanghai, and helps one Happy escape the not-so-happy fate of the other. There is an easy charm about him.

Diana Penty and Ali Fazal basically feature in what can be described as an extended cameo. Sonakshi Sinha delivers an exuberant performance, her swashbuckling Amritsar ki Sikhni avatar mostly on point.

But by the second half, all this breezy and snappy humour gets a stale treatment. There is drama and melodrama as "bauji ki izzat and broken relationships come into the fray, and the laughs are few and far between.

The film makes an attempt at a plot but the machinations constantly appear to be obvious and clichd. Although some jokes do land mostly because of the great chemistry that the ensemble cast shares how long does one keep busy trying to find humour in goons slipping on noodles and making fun of how the Chinese look?

Happy Phirr bhag jaayegi is just about okay and it all boils down to how forgiving you are and how easily you giggle.

Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi And Genius First Day Business
Saturday 25 August 2018 11.00 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi had a low first day collecting in the 2.50-2.75 crore nett range with East Punjab recording the best collections followed by Delhi / UP. The film is a sequel yo Happy Bhaag Jayegi which released in 2016 and collected 2.29 crore nett on day one.

The sequel has not gained much in terms of initial figures and considering the Tax factor which higher in 2016 and ticket rates which are higher in 2018 it is probably likely that the footfalls of Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi (2018) are lower than Happy Bhaag Jayegi (2016).

The film will get growth on Saturday which has become the norm and it has been see that even 50-60% growth nowadays does not mean a strong Monday when a couple of years back this sort of growth ensure a good sustained run. The films fate will be down to the weekday audience. The top openings day for female led films in 2018 are as follows.

1. Veere Di Wedding - 10,42,00,000

2. Raazi - 7,33,00,000

3. Pari - 4,00,00,000

4. Hichki - 3,31,00,000

5. Hate Story 4 - 3,19,00,000

6. Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi - 2.50-2.75 crore

The other film Genius fared poorly with collections in the range of 65-70 lakhs nett. UP and Bihar were little a better especially the single screens but Satyameva Jayate held back its single screen as that film still has the best single screens

Why would anyone invest in a film like Genius?
Looks like another flop for Sonakshi. There's hardly any difference between the opening of the first part with Diana-Jimmy-Abhay and the second part with Sonakshi. Will she ever pick a good film in the future?
