I let go of my tata sky subscription for Netflix. I think Netflix' market is the urban english speaking population. At 100 Million odd thats 5 times the Australian population and one third the US.
Give it a year or two, they will breakeven. Indian TV has forgotten this 100 million with a lot of paying power. Netflix has an opportunity to tap into these wallets...

Torrents are getting harder and harder to find and download given crackdowns globally.

India's always been a very different market and it's not that easy to break in. There's a reason why McDonalds succeeded where others failed.
Netflix has a pretty strong content though and they've only just started with their original Indian content. They'll need some time to really make a mark and tap into that market. If it's expensive, it will have to reduce its rates to be comparable. They are more definitely for the urban youth and not the masses anyways.

Amazon Prime has always been more famous for it's others benefits than its streaming platform. It has a giant Indian movie library though and most of the new ones show on Prime. Their original content needs some work, though shows like Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are genuinely fun.

I think these two have probably made more inroads into the NRI market than India so far.

Netflix is far superior though

I fail to see this.
Amazon has all the really BIG films of the last 20 years. The likes of DDLJ, DTPH, KKHH etc. And they added films like Raazi and other big 2018 releases.
Netflix has a lot less films available and the ones they have, most of them are quite poor.

I think it's all about price, no matter what the product is. India is a price conscious country.
Netflix is way too expensive. So is Apple for that matter, which is why it isn't doing well in terms of sales.
Whereas something like McDonalds is killing it because of the affordable price point. Hotstar not only has variety but a lot of it is FREE.

And of course in this video space, lets not forget torrent. If something is available for free, I don't think too many people are willing to pay for it. I feel like many American companies are unable to figure this out. Maybe because Americans in general are bigger spenders, while Indians tend to be bigger savers.. Just what I think...
