I don't even like Rajini but i could tell you that he has a strong support base in Rural & semi rural areas. You can't judge someone's popularity by social media .Best example is Amma. She was massively trolled/hated online in 2015 elections but she created history by becoming the first ever CM to win 2 times in a row(In some 40 yrs). This despite chennai rains and more allegations. Rajini's fanbase /support base is very simillar to ADMK. Strong Hindu believers. So obviously majority of the ADMK votebank would shift en masse to Rajini along with his fans from Opposition parties. Kamal is famous only among the so called intelligent crowd who don't even form 2% tamil population. He might win few seats if he team up DMK aka party of atheist.
PS: Kaala is not your typical Rajini Film. Its kinda arty (at least according to his fanbase) and the director of the film(Ranjith) is hated by dominant caste like Vanniyars(more than 1 cr population) because he happen be a dalit. So obviously it would open less when compared to his blockbusters shivaji/Robot

Tough to sail on two boats.
Amitabh lost his superstardom when he entered politics in 80s.

Rajni should make up his mind.

Politics is not for everyone. Rajni is not as tough as Jayalalita. Not as thick skinned as Karunanidhi. He cannot take tough stands. Taking such stands invariably creates enemies and he does not know how to deal with them.

Jayalalita's sudden death created vacuum and left TN people with only one corrupt party. Rajni & Kamal want to give an alternative. Their intention may be good. But their preparation is worse than Kejriwal. They are really novice. Better to stay in the field they are good at.

I don't watch South Indian movies so I don't really know Rajni but if he's 67 and doing lead roles, it's more than enough.

How much fame can be expected after that point? The body gives up, action and masala roles become very hard to do and the younger audience likes to see younger stories. No amount of stardom can stop the inevitable.

he was always a big star in south and no one cares about him here. only the media made a big deal out of his few blockbusters and made a mountain out of molehill scenario as they have nothing else to do.
even in south his movies arent going great guns as people are tired of monotonous.

salman khan will soon follow the suit. pakaane ka bhi ek limit hote hai. utter rubbish movies.
