| They are the backbone of any television production. They not only conceive award winning shows but also have the foresight to gauge their potential. They also provide the moolah that keeps these shows alive and kicking for years. In this column, we speak to some of the most vibrant producers who have made shows that have set trends in the television industry and try to find out what makes them tick!
Who better to start with than the producer of telly's most successful show, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi -- Deeya Singh, who along with hubby and business partner, conceived this show that has taken the country by storm in the last two years. Despite an allergic reaction and being clearly ill at ease, Deeya did not hesitate even once to respond to my queries and opened up more and more as we discussed her 'baby,' Jassi. As we spoke, it was easy to visualise her as Jassi's creator -- simple, frank and forthright, here's a producer speaking her heart out.
On the rumours that Jassi is going off air No, Jassi...is not going off-air! There will be a lot of twists and turns in the plot. Infact, we have got an extension and you are going to see Jassi in the next year as well. We have introduced a host of new characters-- Kanwaljeet, Shabnam and Sandhya Singh to name a few. You know, what will happen now Jassi will have a very elegant look and for the first time in the show, she will wear sarees and flaunt heavy jewellery. This is in keeping with the fact that now she is from a rich family. On the marriage that never happened! Well, people watched it, didn't they? But you know, I have always taken criticism in my stride. Even for my other shows, like Banegi Apni Baat, I have made changes if the viewers have reacted negatively to a particular thing. I have done the same in Jassi. I have been lucky that Sony has been supportive. The criticism shows that the show has the capability to evoke emotions and that is what excites me about my work! My show has succeeded because of the viewers, but unfortunately I don't have any means of thanking them!
On the ugly duckling called Jassi She is so real. You know, at this point in her life, she has gone through so much that it has made her determined to take a stand. The concept itself was so strong that it caught on easily. It is the story of a hundreds out there-- living, breathing people! On Mona Singh She has attained iconic stature. Even when all this ends, people will never be able to forget her! She is doing films, but I am sure that her first love will be Jassi and moreover it is not easy to sideline Jassi. Mona is a very committed girl, each time she goes out somewhere for some other shoots, the first thing she does on her return, is visit the Jassi set. We are lucky to have her. On her new shows Hmmm! Well, I am doing a show on Zee and the other on Sahara...but they are all in the pipeline and I cant' talk about them now. But I promise you that it will be a trademark Deeya -Tony show.
