Chalna sikhaya tha na
Anika weeped softly, the vinyl hummed in the background as droplets fell upon the picture she had been holding close. Her father, she reminisced- his one desire had always been to give her hand away. "How can you give a piece of your heart away?" She had questioned crying, promising never to marry, to stay with him until the end.
Dehleez oonchi hai ye, paar karaa de
He had laughed at her. Cradling her small face in his hand he had whispered:"My sweet child, the day I give you away is a day that will bring so much sorrow, I am giving away my life to another am I not?"
Baba main teri mallika
Tukda hoon tere dil ka
She had always been her fathers daughter. Her mother had passed soon after Gauri had been born, since then her best-friend, mother, her world had been her father. At a tender age of thirteen she had asked "Then why Baba, why do you want me to get married?" Anika shook her head as a small chuckle left her, the vivid image striking her; a young Anika who's hands had still been intertwined with little Gauri's, her messy braids shaking as she whined loudly. The pain eased as she skimmed over the picture in her hand, "My Baba" she sighed looking as the beautiful wedding trousseau which shimmered under the eye of the afternoon sun. It glittered so wonderfully, sat against the backdrop of an old vintage bedpost, shoddy curtains and a window overlooking a small neighbourhood. This had been the house she had grown up in, her Baba's house. It was no palace, no Oberoi Mansion, but she had always been her fathers princess.
Ikk baar phir se dehleez paar karaa de
Mudke na dekho dilbaro
Dilbaro...
Mudke na dekho dilbaro
"Baba ki Jaan! One day your prince shall come on a beautiful white mare, baraat layega, and he will ask me, will you give me your princess? He'll promise to care for you more than I ever could, to hold your hand when mine shall be too weak and you will spend eternity surrounded by love." He had told her, a tear escaping his warm, honeyed eyes.
Anika blinked, startled by the blare of her phone: Shivaay (3 Missed Calls). She knew she was being unfair, unpleasant even yet she could not shake her worry. A misfit in all forms. And as much as her heart had lost to Shivaay, her mind deviated. With what audacity would a pauper match a true prince. Shivaay may not have been blue-blooded but he was no less than royalty. If she walked forward, she would not be able to look back.
Fasalein jo kaati jaayein
Ugti nahi hain
Betiyan jo byahi jaaye
Mudti nahi hain...
Gauri (5 Missed Calls).
"Didi, we won't every get married, we will stay with Baba won't we? Tell him Didi!" An eight year old Gauri sobbed. Anika had shoved these memories behind doors that were always locked, she had almost forgotten that she remembered so much. "Baba promised he would walk me to the mandap." Now when she would walk down the aisle all she would remember is her fathers unfulfilled promise, she would walk towards his dream without him. She would leave him behind...
Aisi bidaai ho toh
Lambi judaai ho toh
Dehleez dard ki bhi paar karaa de
Collapsing, she cried aloud, her bangles shattering across the harsh floors. She was a terrible daughter. Marrying the man who's family had killed her very father. He had burned in the mills, her father had been murdered at the hands of the Oberoi's. Where had fate led her? Her body felt like it had been set aflame, the agony spiked her blood as she violently convulsed as she involuntarily pressed her hands onto the floor. The splinters of her bangles pierced her palms. But she felt nothing. Emptiness seeped through her as the echo's of her father rang in her ears. This separation had no respite.
Baba main teri mallika
Tukda hoon tere dil ka
Ikk baar phir se dehleez paar kara de
Steadying herself, Anika stood up with a start: today was her wedding day! Shivaay was waiting, his family was waiting. But no matter how many times her phone rang, or her heart lured her towards him, her feet remained rooted to the love she had for her Baba. She couldn't do this on her own, she needed her father! To walk her down the aisle, to give her away. She could already hear the whispers, the gossip- the headlines of all gossip columns: Shivaay Singh Oberoi marries an Orphan.
Mudke na dekho dilbaro
Dilbaro...
Mudke na dekho dilbaro
Mere dilbaro...
"Baba, Baba I know your listening, please guide me!, Anika screamed her voice now hoarse, "Tell me, how can I be someone else princess when I am yours, how do I forsake the fingers that taught me to walk and hold another hand. What dilemma is this, how do I walk away from you Baba?"
As she sat silently wheezing, she heard a knock on the door. Expecting Gauri or Shivaay she dragged her feet to open it. And there with a melancholy smile stood Shakti Oberoi.
Barfein galengi phir se
Mere dilbaro...
Fasalein pakengi phir se
Tere paaon ke tale
Meri dua chalein
Duaa meri chalein...
"Shakti Uncle" Anika stuttered, completely shocked at the turnout. "Beta! Yeh kya hai, itni chot lagi hai"Shakti held her elbow softly, guiding her towards the sofa. Seating her down, he rummaged the shelves to find a dusty first aid kit. Taking the medication, he dabbed at the gashes. "Uncle are you upset?"Anika asked softly. "When your child is hurting, how can you not be... "Shakti replied. "I'm sorry Shakti Uncle, I know I hurt your son" she whimpered. Shakti looked at sternly before speaking, "I'm talking about you meri bachi, today is your wedding day and you are here, away from Shivaay, crying."
Anika looked at him stunned. "You're missing your father aren't you?" he asked. Shakti Uncle had surprised her once again. She nodded in response as a fresh tear left her.

"Uncle, how..." Anika started before being interrupted by Shakti. "Your father is with you Beta." How Shakti Uncle knew what to say was a mystery. "Your Baba is in your heart, he may not walk you down the aisle but you will carry him with you...and this Papa of yours will give you away" Shakti smiled as Anika embraced him. Her Baba had sent an angel her way, to fulfil his promise. She would carry her Baba down the aisle with her while she held onto her new Papa.
"Now go get dressed Beta, Gauri will be coming any moment to help you!"
Baba main teri mallika
Tukda hoon tere dil ka
Ek baar phir se dehleez paar kara de
Anika radiated in her shimmering lehnga, looking much like the sun after an endless storm. She twirled gracefully as Shivaay beamed proudly as the sight. A sight for sore eyes. His Anika.
Anika held the crook of Shakti's arm as he walked her down the aisle. Suddenly coming to a stop she quickly looked back one last time, and it was as if a soft shadow of her Baba ushered her on, his voice lingering "ek baar phir se dehleez paar kara di, ab mudke na dekho dilbaro." She smiled as she turned around to look as Shakti who tugged at her gently, continuing past the threshold. Gauri cheered her on with the family...correction: her family, celebrated. And as she completed the rituals, she realised; this was marriage- an eternity surrounded by love. Her Baba had been right.
