It so strange to me that people get so focused on box office numbers when the reality is no one ever really knows what they are. The actors think the producers are lying (and they probably are). The producers think the distributors are lying (and they probably are), the distributors think the exhibitors are lying (and they probably are). There is a reason almost no actor is willing to accept a percentage of the profit in lieu of payment UNLESS they are one of the producers - they don't trust the producers. There is no transparency. It is always in the best interest of the exhibitors and distributors to claim they are losing money or barely getting by.
Meanwhile if the producer charges less for the film and tries to recover the budget by satellite or streaming rights, the distributors are up in arms - who will watch in the theatre when they can see it on tv in a few weeks? But if it's not shown on TV or available for streaming quickly its value drops because of the rampant piracy the authorities don't even appear to try to prevent. What a big mess.

If a hit is based on distributor share the most watched film in the history of India could in theory be a flop if the price the distributors paid was too high. A poorly attended film can be a super hit if the price was nominal. Everyone quotes film prices but no one really knows them. Everyone quotes BO numbers but no one really knows them. When there is no transparency (and essentially everyone agrees there isn't) there is no way to know what are really clean hits or semi hits.

If BOI likes your favorite actor, most people believe it without question and BOI will make every effort to turn semihits to hits and explain away underperformance. I have seen BOI change the estimate of what a film sold for after the film released. The opposite will happen for anyone BOI doesn't like. The very fact that BOI clearly likes some actors and some kinds of films and dislikes other actors and styles of films is proof they are not impartial. Aside from the bias, they are only sampling data. They, like everyone else reporting, base their reports on a fraction of distributors and exhibitors they then extrapolate and present as fact or trust the producers for the "actuals which are also manipulated (and not just by Rakesh Roshan though he's everyone's favorite punching bag). Still BOI seems to be the most respected site which means the others are worse. So it's fine to make your statement but what does it mean when no one reliably knows what really is a clean hit.
