In the pre 09/11 era, you could actually send off people to the gates. Also in most Indian airports, they don't even let you enter the airport without tickets. That is not the case in the rest of the world.

Although one thing I don't understand, why didn't your friend/colleague tell the gate agent of the situation and why didn't you go to the flight desk? They will not hold/delay flights for these cases, but they will send staff to collect items at the check-in desk.

Also, you can always be a boss ass bitch like Marilyn Hartman

Once they crossed the security check and walking towards boarding area they realised the laptop bag has been left home. There's no way they could come back and meet me back in the departure lounge. The ticket counter was of no help either and it was a flat out no. I even talked to the immigration officer if there's a way they could pass it on to the other side but was told no. In theory one if them could have helped but it was our mistake and we had to learn the hard way. It does suck without your gadgets but they will manage. 😆
