I hear how oh so many movies are ahead of their times and thats why they dont work.
Then I hear how so many films are regressive and behind the times. But they end up working more times than others.

So I ask why does a a film that is behind the times succeed as oppose to a film ahead of its time. Time is not right for either film. But one still manages to make its mark 😆😆

Because progressive is only good selling insurance, not movies.

This movie addressed a lot of things - it wasn't the ABCD going back to his grassroots, this movie was much much more.

The audience doesn't really like change. Masala films for the most part work. They like the car chasing, the fights...romance etc etc. As a result directors make movies that they know is going to work. The ones that make edgy movies dont do well at the box office. Yes they are criticallly appreciated but it doesn't sell.
Also many people go to see movies to escape real life and it's hardships. As a result they don't want to see things that compares to their real life.

A lot of the older movies are way ahead of their times. Indian audiences were fairly progressive about what they liked to watch until the 90s. There is Amar starring Dilip Kumar, Nimmi and Madhubala where the hero actually rapes the second lead and Madhubala stands up for the woman's rights. Then there is Mirch Masala where you have the women standing up to the cruel Nasser. There is Dastak starring Sanjeev Kumar and Rehana which no one would dream of making even today. Prem Rog which talks of widow remarriage and the caste system. There was Akhir Kyon which had nothing going for it except Smita Patil which showed Smita walk out on her cheating hubby and leaving her infant daughter because her husband would give the kid a better life. Arth which showed that a woman does not need a man or husabnd to succeed. Intezaar which talked about failed romances and the impact of the marriage. Namkeen, Mausam, Andhi all these are so far ahead and more progressive than any movie that is made these days.
