That scream kind of broke his trance while he realized he was still on call
Hello... Hello, love speak to me.. what happened? say something sweetheart! now he started to get worried imagining worst of all the possible scenario... if she wouldn't have spoken in the other second, he would have rushed out of his office
Maan...Maan calm down. please calm down... it's nothing... really... it's just that you weren't paying attention... she trailed off
Oh! He took a breath of relief. He knew it wasn't just her, with so many things happening around him he lost control. Listening to the silence from the other end he thought to get into a bit of damage control
okay listen I was thinking, since I don't have much work left for the day... How about I pick you up after work, I could leave early for a day and I'm sure even you would like it? he didn't want her questioning him about his absent state of mind so, that was his way of distracting her and it was partly true too, he just had minor work which could be wrapped up in maximum of an hour so he could take the rest of the day off
Wow Maan that sounds like a plan!
you picking me up from work, long drive, Dinner and all
AWWW it sounds so romantic
Love You, can't wait to see you" he could hear someone calling her in the background
Ok love, see you soon
Love you too
Walking back to his cube he thought to skip his meal and finish off the rest of the work. By doing so he could get out early and pick a gift on his way. His Girlfriend was a attention seeker he had no doubt in it and he knew, that it was the only reason he was still with her.
Parking his bike, a bit away from the commercial area he walked into the market trying to figure out something which would be appropriate. Then he remembered his friends always buying some kind of jewellery or gadgets for their partner. He figured she wasn't a gadget freak so he settled for jewellery
The first step into the jewellery shop felt like entering an alternate universe, mentally thanking the salesman who quickly figured his dilemma and started helping him with the options which finally zeroed down to some little round shaped earrings or the delicate bracelet with a tiny flower hanging to it.
The bracelet had a minor issue which would take minimum fifteen to twenty minutes so he placed the order and stepped out to grab a quick snack. Walking ahead he noticed there weren't many people in the market, since it was a working day and also it was afternoon the shoppers were scarce. Chiding himself for behaving like a coward lately he moved ahead.
His steps finally came to a halt when he noticed he was in front of the same shop and in the same lane which swore not to step into since that fateful day not so long back.
Wiping his sweaty palms on his trousers he walked to the other side of the road. The loud heartbeats and the sweat tickling down his forehead were proof enough to say he wasn't as brave as he thought himself to be.
In spite of his inner voice warnings to step back and get the hell out of that place. His legs had mind of their own. Beside the bigger showrooms there was a small ally which was hidden between the huge buildings.
Reaching the other end of the ally he took a breath of relief seeing it was nothing he feared. It was just another street, like an extension to the market with a half-demolished building which had a huge board stating work under progress. Shaking his head, he thought to take a longer route to kill his time, as he was about to pass the building he noticed the gate was open and there were four of five well-dressed people most probably business men under in some argument.
Before he could avert his eyes, he noticed one of them looked straight at him. Slowly its eyes turned dead and one side of its face was covered with blood and this time he recognized the dead because it was the face he was very familiar with.
The other men turned into Black dust and disappeared with the air. It was the face he had been seeing for the past twenty-six years of his life. It opened its mouth flushing blood out with full force.
And he ran.
From the sight...
From the board which has Smart Builders logo
From the conclusion he just drew...
and most importantly from himself!
Bending on his knees he finally stopped running trying to gather his lost breath while panting heavily. Ignoring the curious glances thrown his way he tried to figure out where he was only to know he was still in front of the same jewellery shop he shopped from.
Did he not see what he saw? Was it just his fragment of imagination or his overly stressed mind creating scenarios?
He quietly entered the showroom and waited till the jewellery was delivered. And when he finally reached his home there was no one to greet him. Cursing his luck as staying alone was not what he wished for at the moment, he rang his dad
Hello Dad, are you busy? He continued his call while walking towards his room
Hello Maan, no son tell me, you called at such an odd time do you need something? Was that concern he heard in his dad's voice? Ignoring the thought altogether he got rid of his shoes
No dad I was home early and there's no one at home so... cursing himself for not coming up with a better reason he entered the washroom switching his call to speaker mode
Come on son you could have called your mother, now spill what is it? I'm quite busy today! Ya right he thought rolling his eyes and thanking god at the same time
Dad did we take up any project near the old church road recently? He asked holding his breath looking at his reflection in the mirror
Near old church road? yes there was a remodelling of some old building... why this sudden interest in business son?
The mirror was slowly turning smoky, he took a step back looking at the black fumes coming from the back of the mirror
Aaa... Nothing dad I passed that area on my way so ... I'll talk to you later dad! He abruptly cut the call just before the glass shattered into hundreds of pieces in front of his eyes and each piece was showing his reflection
His face bleeding from everywhere looking straight into his eyes and conveying the message which was now taking the form of a clear picture
FACE YOURSELF MAAN
SAVE YOURSELF
And then everything was gone. He was left with the broken pieces of glass and the silence which was slowly consuming him
