Dhawan will be starring in Rannbhoomi
which will be helmed by Shashank Khaitan
and produced by Karan Johar's Dharma
Productions.
Confirming the news, Varun had said to a
leading daily, "Shashank is not only a close
friend, he's also a film-maker whom I have
tremendous respect for. Our association has
always been successful and magical, and we
decided to take our alliance further and
create a mammoth spectacle. Dharma is
home for the both of us, and what better
team than this to collaborate on a Diwali
celebration? Rannbhoomi is an ambitious
film with a beating heart."
In some more details about the movie,
according to a leading tabloid, Rannbhoomi
is the reimagined version of Shuddhi, a
project which was put in the backburner.
It was in 2013 that Karan had planned to
make Shuddhi with Hrithik Roshan and
Kareena Kapoor Khan. However, Hrithik
backed out paving way for Salman Khan
who also ended up leaving the project. Then
Karan found hope in Varun and Alia Bhatt in
2015 but it did not prove
frutiful and the movie was put aside.
A source informed the tabloid that Karan
was attached to Shuddhi and felt it would
bowl the audience over. While Karan
Malhotra was initially going to be the
director, the responsibility is now in the
hand of Shashank. Shashank has reworked
the script to suit a younger actor like Varun
and the budget has also been resized.
Because Shuddhi took so many years to
happen with no avail, Karan changed the
name of the title from Shuddhi to
Rannbhoomi as he felt it was a bad omen.
And hence, the filmmaker was sure that
Shuddhi will definitely not be the name of
the film.
Rannbhoomi is slated for a Diwali 2020
release.
