Huge insult to ranveer
Ranveer portrayed a character who was OTT and he played it as per director's vision. So far he hasn't given one faulty performance.

When it comes to Shahrukh Khan I can't differentiate his characters between bazigar and Darr unless you watch the full movie. Show me tidbits from any of his movies and it'd be difficult to figure out which one i am watching...He is same in all.
So pls let's stop underplaging new talents just coz some older guy hasn't learnt what he is supposed to in 25 years.

There is no comparison. Even box office wise Ab toh🥱

Darr is only relevant because Sunny Paaji couldn't stop talking about it, crying and whining to anyone who would listen warna toh it's a kela award worthy ham job by King Khan.
A better comparison would be Deadly Dutt's Khalnayak, Aamirs Earth or even Pc's Aitraaz. Even though Ranveer isn't on their level in Padmavat, he's still way better than SrKs Darr.

Umm i found srk's acting in most of his movies OTT but that's how everybody liked it. I think srk was his best in swades, baki i won't call him a great actor. As for ranveer, he is really talented and has a long way to go!!

I don't understand how and why this became a comparison of who is a better actor - SRK or Ranveer. It is a plausible discussion since both SRK and Ranveer are Bollywood actors.
To me, the Darr comparison was that of impact.

Darr is a remake of a few similar Hollywood movies. In the script, Rahul is supposed to be a dark and deranged stalker. He is meant to be the villain. Sunil is supposed to be the protective strong boyfriend. He is meant to be the hero. Rahul was a risky role for someone who wanted to be a hero. Playing villains is a risky move that can be career suicide for aspiring heroes. Aamir Khan left the film because of its pro-Sunil narrative.

But somehow when the movie came out SRK became the sympathetic villain. People were secretly rooting for him and hoping that Sunil would lose out. His "Kkkiran" became iconic. It really upset Sunny that his saving the day act did not gain him any fans. He was upset the villain became the hero.

Whether one believes SRK hammed as Rahul or gave the performance of a lifetime - Rahul from Darr changed movie villains and made SRK a superstar.

Similarly, Allaudin Khilji is a dark and deranged villain. He was a ruthless conqueror with a lust for power and ravenous sexual appetite. He is loathed not just by Indians, but most of South Central Asia for the barbarism of his forces. Once upon a time such roles were left for the likes of Shakti Kapoor and Amrish Puri only. To play such a character is a big risk. Especially for a person like Ranveer Singh who has a huge female fan following. He has established himself as a charming ruffian, and now he has to play the rapey Khilji.

While he will never be a sympathetic villain on account of the historic character he played - Ranveer's Khilji is becoming iconic. Despite being the despised villain he has a magnetism and charisma to him. Most people who watch the film are enthralled by his portrayal.

I must confess - I loathe Ranveer Singh and was pleasantly surprised at how much screen presence he had.

So irrespective of whether one believes Ranveer hammed or gave the performance of a lifetime - Khilji has changed the way we perceive villains in our era and has made Ranveer more popular.

IMO acting has nothing to do with it - because for as many people praising the role you iwll get the detractors who point out the over the top happing. That is why impact has everything to do with it - no matter what critics say - these roles will be forever iconic.

I loved when Ratans army was attacking Khiljis campsite and Jim Sarbh woke Khilji up and Khilji was like "save the birds and let me sleep" 😆😆😆

I'm not sure what Darr changed? Mainstream 'Heroes' have been playing negative roles since the 60s. From Sunil Dutt in Mother India, Vinod Khanna in Mera Gaon Mera Desh to superstars AB, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra they've all done it. Dutt did Khalnayak the same year. It had little impact when it released, SRK gained more from Baazigar and it was DDLJ that catuplated him into the top league.
Pro Sunil narrative? We both must've watched different movies. I have a hard time calling Rahul a negative character. He was more of a bechara character.

Motherless Rahul...Bechara
Friendless Rahul...Bechara
Detached Father...Bechara
Unloved, depressed, mentally ill Rahul...bechara, bechara, bechara

Why can't he just have the one thing he wants in his sad life?

That's the narrative, audience felt sympathy because that's what the director wanted us to feel. It's forced.

Khijli on the other hand is outright evil. The audience are not meant to feel compassion for him. He's no bechara. He's a true villain.

Darr was neither pathbreaking in anyway, nor a great performance. Its glorified by names like Sunny Deol, Yash Chopra & Aamir Khan. Lots of other outright villainous characters Ranveer can be compared to rather than a bechara Rahul.
