When Madhuri was at her peak and when we all knew that she was the one raking in the audience, she still had to play second fiddle to Sanjay Kapoor in Beta. It's to her credit that inspite of it she still managed to outshine him. Sridevi had a chaalbaaz to her name but still in many movies she had to play second fiddle to the hero though she was the one audience flocked to see. In recent times the one actress that comes close to a similar type of stardom is DP. To be honest, she today commands more star power than a Ranbir, Ranveer or Shahid. Yet directors still try to use her to prop their hero's like Tamasha and now Padmaavat. It's to her credit that she still shines in these roles but in BM , the weak characterisation was so obvious it reflected in her acting also which was the weakest till date. I wish there were more directors like shoorjit Sircar and others who create strong female roles and are not so obsessed with male heros. Female centric films like piku Neerja, Vidya Balans earlier movies, Kangana many movies have done really well. We need more good directors and also female directors like Zoya and Farah create more author backed roles for heroines rather than just using them as glorified props for the hero's. Our heroines deserve better. And fortunately the field is rich -proyanka, DP, Kangana, Sonam, anushka, Vidya, Alia all of them are very good actors. Even a Katrina is an engaging performer who carried mere... in her shoulders inspite of her faulty Hindi or average acting. She has sufficient box office pull. We need to see more movies with stronger female leads than the same old same old. It's a disservice to the talented pool of women out there.
Good Anushka is producing her own movies. At some point if time women have to take matters tin their own hands

Deepika has always had issues with dialogue delivery which over all has made her acting weak.

She is an overrated actress.

Am I misunderstanding the topic?
Even though TM uses DP as an illustration - I assumed the topic to be a broader discussion of sexism in Bollywood.

But the responses so far are fixated on DP.

Please clarify if I should focus on DP or address the broad issue?
