It was typical breakfast scent at Oberoi mansion. Tej was messaging his PA about an important file, Shakti was doing his last minute prayer before eating, Jhanvi was buttering the toast, Pinky was contemplating what to eat, Shivay was trying to make Annika understand why oily food in early morning causes indigestion to him, Rudra was mentally calculating calories of the food on his plate while Bhavya was adding extra sugar to her juice before her health conscious husband would give her lecture on risks of obesity. Daadi as usual was observing the happenings on the dining table with a smile, to see her family together was her perfect start of the day.
"Where is Om and Gauri? " asked Daadi to no one in particular
As if on cue, Omkara and Gauri entered the dining hall and greeted everyone. Shivay was the first one to spring on his feet to hold the Omkara and Gauri's little ten months old daughter , Maanasa, because he didn't want to fight with everyone to get her attention.
"Hello! Maanu, Good Morning. He wished taking the baby from Gauri.
"Yaiyy. Said the baby . Maanasa's first word was yaiyy' in spite of tremendous effort on Omkara's side to teach baby the word papa' ever since she was in her mother's womb. Shivay is super convinced that she is trying to say Shivay considering that is the name on every housemates' lips often.
"Yes... Shivaaayyy... said Shivay with a drawl proud by the fact that she calls him by name.
Shivay is not the one to shy away from kids. After all he literally bought up his brothers being a father figure. However, Maanasa is entirely different for him. She is special. She bought in with her hope, love and lots of happiness. She redefined every relationship of the house. Any hostility that was present in the family vanished after her birth and Shivay knew that she is god sent.
"Zyada mat udiye! She is just saying yiy not Shivay. chided Annika as she moved closer to Shivay and the baby and tried to take away the baby from him.
"No... Shivay refused to give away the baby and took a step back. "She likes to only have breakfast with her bade papa, haina Maanu? asked Shivay looking at the baby.
Shivay and Annika looked at the baby curiously for an answer but her mind was stuck at the bright orange juice that Bhavya was holding. Noticing the same Bhavya immediately jumped at the opportunity to hold the baby in her arms, "Do you want this? asked Bhavya raising the glass and Maanasa immediately jumped to her chaachi trying to take a closer look at the bright colour.
Bhavya kept twirling the content of the glass in front of baby's eyes while holding her securely in her arms. Baby was amused by the motion and she was watching the twirl open mouthed.
"Gauri bhabhi, can I give her juice? asked Bhavya
Bhavya was not accustomed to babies. In fact Maanasa was the first baby who Bhavya was observing closely. So, every step from holding the baby to taking her out in the garden, Bhavya always asks consent from Gauri or any elder present.
"She doesn't like orange juice. Answered Omkara instead of Gauri
"Arre! Kyun? asked Gauri looking at her husband narrowing her eyes
"Simple, Gauri. I don't like orange juice so even my beti will not like it.
"Hadh he! Gauri said in a sarcastic tone. "There is no such rule. Then turning to Bhavya Gauri said. "Give her very small quantity in spoon, Bhavya.
Bhavya cheerfully fed the baby juice in a tea spoon. Baby Maanasa didn't like the sour taste of the juice making her scrunch her nose.
"Deka! said Omkara pointing at his daughter with a smile. "I know my daughter better, okay?
Gauri was tempted to roll her eyes, but she controlled herself. Even a very small thing related to Maanasa is very significant to Omkara. More than once Gauri was left speechless by the amount of love his husband is capable of. Their marriage started off on a rough note, though they started loving each other later. Gauri can bet best of her assets that the love Omkara has for her is just half of the love that he has for their daughter. It is as if everyone is seeing a new Omkara. He is now completely lively, always happy and extremely buoyant.
Everyone wanted a share of Manasa in the morning before they start their day. Gauri was thankful that their daughter enjoyed all the attention like her and doesn't get cranky seeing so many people like her father. Even though she is still a toddler, Manasa can easily recognize every family member and never fails to make everyone feel special with her smile and flying kisses.
Omkara was holding his daughter close to him and whispering something in her ears. He always does that before going out to work in the morning. When Gauri questions about it, he said, "I am telling her secretly how much I love her, because if mummyRi hears it, then she will be jealous.
"Papa's kiss? asked Omkara and at once Manasa placed a open mouthed, wet and sloppy kiss on her father's stubble cheeks.
Rudra who was witnessing all this showed his cheeks and said, Chachu's kiss.
Baby Manasa only gave her chachu a loud flying kiss making him pout.
"No cheek kiss for chachu? he asked
Manasa hugged her father's neck and hide her face in the crook of his neck as a reply.
"That kiss is only special for papa. Said Omkara proudly
Omkara loved his brothers more than his ownself, but not more than his daughter. He would unabashedly declare his rights on her and never hesitate to reserve special privileges on her claiming to be the father. When he is home, it is hard to find him and Manasa not together. Be it Manasa is in her bade papa's room or daadi's room or with her choti daadi, Omkara will always be following his daughter everywhere. Though his obsessive behaviour annoys Gauri at times, she never has the heart to reprimand a loving father for loving his daughter unconditionally.
Gauri was in her room arranging the mess father daughter duo has created while playing with trains previous night, when Jhanvi entered with a huge box.
"What is this, maaji? asked Gauri settling beside Jhanvi on the bed with the box in-between them. Manasa was crawling on the bed nonchalantly surrounded by pillow walls.
"I wanted to show you something special. Said Jhanvi as she opened the box and took out something that looked like a photo. "80% similar. She declared on examining the photo and passed it on to Gauri.
Gauri was surprised to see almost lookalike of her own daughter in the picture.
"Yeh Omkaraji, hai? she asked
"Yes, doesn't Maanu has his eyes? asked Jhanvi taking her granddaughter in her hand
"And nose also, maa. Said Gauri still observing the picture.
Gauri showed the photo to Manasa who looked at it quiet bemused at finding another small minion like her.
"Yeh aapka papa hai. Said Jhanvi kissing the baby's cheeks lovingly.
Jhanvi's biggest regret in her life was not spending enough time with her kids. But, her granddaughter's birth cleared her off that regret, because Jhanvi spends every minute adoring her granddaughter, observing her, caring for her and loving her. Initial days after Manasa's birth was difficult for both Omkara and Gauri. Lack of experience was creating lots of trouble for them. Jhanvi stepped in as the responsible daadi and helped the new parents. She was surprised that how things came naturally to her from bathing the baby to changing the diapers. She kind of lived memories of her own children's childhood by spending time with her poti.
"Bilkul Om ki tara. She would say every time Manasa would pretend to cry on seeing bath made for her. "He was not really fond of bathing as a kid.
"Nothing has changed much, maaji. Replied Gauri chuckling making her husband glare at the saas-bahu Jodi ganging up against him.
"Maa, tell me about me as a kid. Asked Rudra one day when Jhanvi and Shivay were discussing about similarities between Omkara and Manasa. That paved way to reminiscing beautiful memories about childhood of Obros. Even Pinky, Shakti and Tej joined Shivay, daadi and Jhanvi on the discussion. Omkara would occasionally share some interesting and embarrassing about Rudra as baby otherwise settled to only listening stories from others like Rudra. Annika, Gauri and Bhvya had a field day knowing so many things about their husband's childhood. They noted a thing or two about their husbands to later tease them in the confines of their bedroom. That was one of the best evenings of every Oberoi's life.
Shivay and Rudra had already arranged the seating and snacks for watching the India vs Sri Lanka cricket series finals. Cricket is one more thing that the boys easily bond over and they were all excited for match.
"Guys, deko who has come to watch cricket with us. Announced Omkara as he walked inside holding Manasa who was wearing a Indian cricket jersy and white shorts.
"O, please let her sit with me. See, I have the most comfortable chair. Said Rudra and in order to prove his point he even pushed back the chair and jumped on the seat.
Omkara didn't want to upset Rudra, so he placed Manasa on Rudra's lap with a warning that if Rudra gets too jumpy and scares her, then he will take away his Maanu.
Meanwhile, Annik, Gauri and Bhavya were seated in the poolside relaxed. They had to cut down their favourite get together cum gossip session after Manasa was born as Gauri used to be occupied all time. Today was one of the rare times when Gauri is free and they couldn't help but have girl time famously called as AniRiVya bonding by the Obros.
"Ab Maanu cricket dekegi! asked Bhavya
"I don't know, Bhavya. Om wants her with him always. He even wanted to take her to his studio and show his art. I explained that chemicals of paints are allergic for her. " said Gauri
"He is being such a cute DaddyKara, haina? asked Annika munching chips
"Yeah. Agreed Bhavya
"All this will look cute only from far. Om is only making me mad very other day. He treats me like I am not Maanu mom, but her appointed nanny. Said Gauri annoyed at her husband
Both Annika and Bhavya giggled at her plight.
"Why, Bhabhi? asked Bhavya
"The other day he told me, Gauri, do you have trouble handling her? I can take her to exhibition with me.
"Quiet possessive he is. Reasoned Annika
"Paranoid actually. Said Gauri
Manasa loved watching TV in general. She was totally fascinated by various colours and motions. So, she was keenly examining everything. On top of it, the boys will occasionally shout and cheer making her very enthusiastic and she will start jumping as well.
"Shit! Man, ball nahi pass karne aata!! shouted a frustrated Rudra
"It mn... repeated Maanu copying her chachu placing her hand on her head.
All three Obros looked at her bothered.
"What did she tell? asked Shivay
"I hope she didn't say what I think she said. Gauri will kill me. Said a panicked Omkara
"Arre! It was just her usual blabber. Said Rudra dismissively
As if to prove him wrong, Manasa again repeated, "It man.
"Duffer!!. Wacked Omkara Rudra's head. "See! What you are teaching her?
"Main! asked Rudra making innocent face
"ffer. Repeated Manasa making all three brothers place their hand on mouth appalled.
"See, you are teaching her wrong words. Said Rudra
"But I...
"Okay, cut it. Ordered Shivay. "This is the age when kids will listen to everyone around them and try to copy. So, we should be careful.
"That is fine, Shivay, but how will we stop her from repeating these words? asked Omkara worried. Gauri was over sensitive about swearing. She even hates occasional words she keeps hearing in the mansion from his brothers. So, her listening to their daughter say shit' will be nightmare.
"Listen, we will try to distract her, okay? We will give her a new word. Said Shivay
"Brilliant idea. Appreciated Omkara
"Maanu, say protein shake. Said Rudra smiling at Maanu
"Rudy, bachi hai woh. How will she say such a big word.
"Toh! Sh... before Rudra could say that again Omkara stopped him
"Guys, say a easy word. Something like...
"Papa offered Omkara
Both the brothers smiled at Omkara's enthusiasm at making the baby call him papa. "Okay. Agreed all.
"Baby, pata hai tumara PAPA boring hai. Kaun boring hai? Tumara PA...PA.. said Rudra earning himself a whack from Omkara and glare from Shivay.
"Rudy!!!.
"What! I am teaching her papa.
"Just teach the word papa. Keep your expert opinion about me to yourself.
"Arre! I am doing that only. I am teaching her to say papa.
"Guys, don't fight. Just keep telling papa, so that she learns the word.
"Am I supposed to chant papa, papa, papa, papa...
"Grrr... Rudra stop it. I can't believe...
"Papa... said Manasa cutting Omkara's sentence.
All three looked at her amused.
"What! Say it again! pleaded Omkara
"Papa... repeated Manasa on receiving appreciative glances
Omkara took his daughter in his arms and hugged her tight. Tears of happiness and pride clouded on his eyes. This was the best moment of his life. Shivay and Rudra couldn't help but dab their wet eyes at seeing their brother very much happy.
"I wonder what kind of father Shivay will be. Said Annika lost in her thoughts
"Better than Om for sure. Said Gauri
"By the way, bhabhi, when are you and Shivay bhaiya planning for baby? asked Bhavya
"Soon. Annika answered with a blush making both Gauri and Bhavya awww at her flushed face.
"Only if another baby comes to Oberoi Mansion, everyone will stop pampering Manasa and turning into a spoiled kid. Said Gauri
"Aise mat bolo.' Said Annika in her cutest niece's defence
"Gauri bhabhi, Maanu is sweetest kid I have seen. Agreed Bhavya
Gauri was about to complain about DaddyKara and his sweetheart daughter more when Obros walked in with wide grin.
"Gauri, you won't believe what she said. " Omkara said with gleam as he rushed to her side with their daughter.
"Bolo, bolo. Encouraged Omkara
"Pa..pa... said Manasa giggling extremely happy with the idea of getting so much appreciation from her family. "Papa she mumbled again
"Wow... exclaimed Gauri taking the baby from Om. "My baby is saying papa, now.
"Awww... How sweet. Said Annika
"How did she learn this word? asked Bhavya
"Being a responsible chachu, I taught her this. Rudy took all the credits
"Rudra... warned Shivay. Should I tell them what you taught her?
"Bhaiyaaa... wined Rudra
"I am so happy today. I have to record it at once. Omkara took out his phone saying that and kept it in front of Manasa. "Now, say it sweetheart. He encouraged.
Manasa looked at her parents then at her Rudra chachu and bade papa. With a smile she said, "It man..
"What!!! asked Gauri shocked. "What is she saying Om?
Om looked at Shivay and Rudra panicked.
"Nothing, Gauri she is just blabbering randomly. Covered Shivay
"It doesn't seem like that, Shivay. Said Annika. "Maanu, say again.
"It man.. said Manasa this time louder
"Bhabhi... don't you understand??? She is saying sit man.said Omkara with a fake smile
"It doesn't seem like sit man. Said Bhavya suspiciously
"Sit man??? How did she learn that word? asked Gauri
"How will I know? You are the one with her 24*7. Said Om to escape
"But!!...
"Chup, Gauri. I know better, okay. Now come with me we will record her new words. With that Omkara pulled his wife with him because AniRiVya are totally capable of digging deep and finding the truth. Knowing Rudra, he will definitely blabber everything with one glare from Bhavya.
Jhanvi was surprised by the sight in front of her as she entered her bedroom. Tej was lying on the bed holding a big Pooh soft toy in front of his face making funny noises and their granddaughter was laughing heartily.
"Who is this!!!! drawled Tej with hint of joy in his voice and moved aside the toy to reveal his smiling face.
"Dada... say dada... said Tej with a smile.
Jhanvi was amazed at the look of pure bliss on her husband's face. She has not even seen him interact with his own kids. She was convinced that he was not a kids' person, but now seeing him turn to a kid with their granddaughter amazed her.
"Tej, what are you doing? asked Jhanvi
"Why? I am playing with my granddaughter. Answered Tej picking up Manasa in his hands. "Who is here? asked Tej to the baby who only continued to smile. "Your daadi is here. Said Tej with a smile making the baby clap.
"Jhanvi, we should start planning for her birthday party. Said Tej thoughtfully.
"Two more months left for it Tej. Replied Jhanvi sitting beside the Dada-Poti duo
"I know, but we should preparation now itself. Tej Singh Oberoi's granddaughter's first birthday celebration should be the best in the entire India. He declared proudly.
"Don't you think Om and Gauri should decide all that? I don't even know if they want to have a party considering Om always prefers private celebration to parties. Said Jhanvi
"I don't care what he wants, okay? I will decide how to celebrate my granddaughter's birthday. Your son and his boring ideas will not follow my granddaughter. I will make it the liveliest parties with lots of chocolates, cartoons, magic shows, colours and all. It should be cartoon themed party I guess because Maanu likes Pooh a lot."
"But , Tej, at least you should talk to Gauri and Om before organizing all this.
Before Tej could reply they heard Gauri who just entered the room with Manasa's milk bottle ask, "What to ask Gauri and Om?
"Gauri. Said Tej,I was telling your maaji that I want to start planning Maanu's birthday party already, but she is saying that I should ask you and Omkara about it.
"Kyun!asked Gauri taking the baby from Tej and laid on her lap to feed her from the bottle. "Papa, do whatever you want for Maanu's birthday. Anyway, Om will make boring idea only.
"Are you both badmouthing my son in front of me!!! reprimanded Jhanvi
"Gauri... called Omkara as he stood in front of his parent's room. "I was searching for you. He said
"Why?
"I wanted the papers of art gallery that I gave you last week.
"Baby is drinking milk. Give me five minutes, I will get it for you.
Omkara was about to walk away when Jhanvi called him to join them. Though Omkara's relationship with his father changed a lot on positive side especially after Manasa's birthday, he didn't start calling Tej Dad' yet. Omkara sat on the couch beside Gauri and looked at his mom.
"They both are planning about Manasa's birthday party already. Jhanvi said
"Party? asked Omkara looking at Gauri. They hadn't even started to discuss it yet.
"Let's have a party, Om. Asked Gauri in a pleading voice. She didn't want Om to deny outright as that would definitely hurt Tej.
"But she doesn't like crowd. " reasoned Om.
"How do you know? asked Gauri
"I just know, Gauri.
"She doesn't have to necessarily feel the same way as you about everything, Om. She is my daughter as well. Maybe like me even she enjoys company. Reasoned Gauri.
"But...
"Come on, everyone is excited. Said Gauri
"Even Annika and Bhavya was discussing about party with kids from neighbourhood. Added Jhanvi
Omkara looked between his wife and mom. "Fine, whatever you guys want to do. He said
Gauri looked at her father in law and grinned who also returned her joy with a wink.
Gauri was sitting near the window observing the scene the full moon painted on the sky. It is rare to find a moment for herself after marriage and baby, so Gauri enjoyed few precious moments like this peacefully.
"Thinking about me? asked her husband wrapping his arm around her shoulder and sat behind her.
Gauri leaned back on him with a smile. They both sat there in silence, savouring the moments recollecting memories they had near the same window in the past.
"I miss this. Admitted Omkara. Gauri lifted her head to look at him. "You and me, all alone, in the world of our own.
Gauri moved closer to Omkara and hugged him.
"We are parents now, so our priorities shift. Said Gauri
"I know. Agreed Om. After pause for few minutes he asked, "Do you feel I ignore you, Gauri?
"What? Why would you ask that?
"I just...
"Om... whispered Gauri placing her hand on his cheeks. "Omkara you are being an awesome father and even a better husband. Don't think you lack anywhere.
"I don't spend time with you like before. Confessed Omkara
"Even I am busy taking care of Manasa. I hardly even make your favourite tea for you. I am sure once she is big enough, we three will find a balance. Don't stress yourself.
"There is a small problem with the arrangement, Gauri. Said Omkara with a naughty glint in his eyes
Gauri narrowed her eyes.
"Well, now that we have a baby girl, I was wondering if we should, you know, plan for a baby boy.
"What!!
"You told me you wanted a son like me, didn't you? And Rudra also keeps demanding for Chota O. Said Om making innocent face
Gauri gasped whacking her husband. "Not for next three years. She said
"Why!! pouted Om
"Let Manasa go to school, let bade bhaiya and Rudy bhaiya have kids of their own, we will think about it then.
"Gauri.. he wined
"Omkara... she warned
"Okay, fine. He agreed
"Chalo, now we will go and get our baby from Annika bhabhi before she confuses her with her language. " said Gauri. Omkara smiled at her and they both happily walked out of the room to find their daughter.
