Again not sure but Here in Nepal dogs are consider to be the gatekeeper of the Yamraj. We even worship dogs during Diwali so that they will let us enter underworld when our times come.
As Kal Bhairav is associated with death and destruction maybe that is why dog is the vahan of kal Bhairav
