Neil was waiting for Avni to call him since last 48 hours. Ever since he had come to Delhi two months ago, to solve the most difficult and challenging case of his career, he and Avni had made sure they talk to each other daily. Either on phone or on skype. Last week was no different. They continuously called each other and texted when the other was busy. This week though he noticed Avni being distracted during the phone call. He couldn't point to what felt different, but something was up with Avni and Neil knew it.
Two days ago, she told him that she will not call him as she is busy with the new story. He understands, with her being a journalist in one of a big and reputed news channel, she has responsibilities. But she should have at least texted him or replied to his texts. Worry was eating him away as he was hundreds of miles away from her. He even tried to get information regarding Avni from his family members, but they were also tight-lipped on this matter, changing the topic as soon as he starts talking about Avni.
He couldn't even concentrate on his work today. All he wanted to do was fly to Mumbai and know what's wrong with his wife. He was scared, scared that she has had enough of him. Juhi's fiasco had a deep impact on him and Avni as well as their family. They all were so heartbroken and betrayed. It was difficult few months they all spent together getting over it. It was a difficult phase, but they had each other. He and Avni went on a two-week-long vacation to Greece, which only brought them closer. Just after returning from the vacation, he was handed over this case.
Avni was supposed to come along with him, but she got the job in the news channel which she had applied for months ago. Avni being Avni was even ready to leave the opportunity behind to be with him here and continue writing blogs but he would never allow that. He knew she was brilliant at what she does and he wanted the world to know that too. And now he is here, hundreds of miles away from his wifey, worrying that his wife of one year has had enough of him and his family.
Neil enters the restaurant in which he, his team and his friends from Delhi Police department spend their weekends. The restaurant is close to the police station and has good music and food.
As soon as he enters the place, he notices a familiar figure sitting along with his team in their booth. Neil's heart skips a beat. She is laughing to whatever story his team member Anant is telling her whilst looking so freaking beautiful in black long top, and jeans. He rubs his eyes to make sure that it isn't a dream. A very beautiful dream it would have been indeed.
Finally, she notices him, and he is close to sobbing after watching her entire face break into a smile after seeing him. She gets up and speed walks towards him while he meets her halfway. They hug each other so tightly that even air couldn't pass from between them. He sighs into her embrace and after what felt like decades, DD pats him on his back, while his other friends are teasing them relentlessly.
He takes Avni's hand in his and walks out of the room, and makes Avni sit on the bench in the backyard. He hugs her again to ensure she is real and not just a figment of his imagination. He breathes a sigh of relief in Avni's arms.
"I missed you so much Avni. These last two days have been a literal hell. said Niel closing the distance between their lips.
"I missed you too Neil replies Avni in between their kisses.
"Neil mujhe tumse koi baat karni hai said Avni after breaking the kiss.
Neil's heartbeat increased. So, he was right. Something was not right with Avni and it scared him. All the relief he felt two minutes ago, was for nothing. In this world, the only thing Neil was terrified was that of losing his Avni. He knew two months is a long time, but he was totally helpless in this matter.
"Avni dekho I am sorry. I know how this must have felt. I have been really busy since I received this case. Also, the fact that we are staying in two different cities at this point in time doesn't help. But I assure you Avni that I'll be back home soon. My gut says we are very close to solving this case. Once we catch the killer, my work here is done and then I'll be back to you. Bas thoda aur time Avni that's all I am asking., pleaded Neil desperately.
"Tum yeh kya keh rahe ho Neil? Of course I understand. I know you will be back and I am extremely proud of you for taking on this case. And yes, the long-distance thing is difficult, but it has also brought us closer to each other. It has made us stronger Neil, we can never deny that.
After hearing this Neil was about to take a sigh of relief but stopped when he heard Avni say,
"Par Neil mujhe tumse kisi aur topic pe baat karni hai Neil
"Neil wo..wo mein yeh kehna chahti hu ki..., started Avni as Neil nodded to her.
"Mein tumse yeh kehna chahti hu ki Neil, a new member is going to join our family, finished Avni.
"New member? Have you bought a dog or some pet home Avni?, asked a confused Neil.
"Mujhe to koi problem nahi hai but Mom ko hosakti hai. She has an allergy of dogs. She can't stand them, but you don't worry we'll keep him in our flat, continued Neil while making plans for the accommodation of the new member in his head.
"NEIL !!! Now, who is being a tube light?, whisper screamed an exasperated Avni.
"That new member is Pillu Neil. I am pregnant, said Avni successfully shutting up her super cop husband.
Neil's heart stopped beating. Along with his heart, his brain also stopped functioning. He couldn't believe it. He wanted to do many things at once but he couldn't move. His body was frozen.
"Neil! Neil kuch kaho, pleaded Avni breaking Neil from his stupor.
"Oh my God...Oh my God Avni, uttered Neil after the shock subsided and he was able to move his body.
He stood up, taking Avni in his arms and twirled her around whilst screaming,
"I am going to be a Dad. Oh, my lord, I am going to be a Dad !!!
All the spectators smiled lovingly witnessing the lovely couple celebrate while DD captured this precious moment between his sir and Bhabhi on his phone.
"Kab pata chala tumhe?
"Kaise pata chala?
"Tumhari tabiyet to theek hai na?
"Wait isliye tum mujhse do din se baat nahi kar rahi Avni? I was worried sick for you, he bombarded Avni with a string of questions after putting her on the ground.
Avni, on the other hand, placed her hands on his shoulders and asked him to relax. She told him how she was feeling dizzy and weak from the start of the week. How most of the week all she did was, sleep. She told him how two days ago during breakfast, after taking in the smell of meat, she vomited. How she considered the possibility of being pregnant only after Bebe pointed that fact out. How she found out that she was pregnant by using pregnancy test kits. Several of them. She told him she was very nervous and didn't know how he would react but still she wanted to give him this news in person and not on phone or by some text. She told him she was very scared and it took two days to gather the courage to fly here and tell him the news.
"Avni you're an idiot. But you're my idiot. I love you so much Avni. I don't think it is capable for one person to love another as much as I do you. You are my world and to think that the symbol of our love is growing inside you had made the happiest man alive. I love you. So much. You can tell me anything. Talk to me about anything without being scared. I am your husband Avni and you are the most precious person to me in the whole world. Not talking to you even for a day killed me. I thought you have finally come to your senses and were fed up of me and my crazy family., said Neil opening yet another page of his heart in front of his wife.
"Hey, don't you dare call my family crazy., added Avni to lighten the moment.
Neil smiled and told Avni how he hates this long-distance thing. He told her how he cannot kiss or how he cannot hug her or sleep in her lap after a long day of work. Neil told her how much he missed hugging her, waking up to her face and making love to her.
To which Avni laughed mischievously and asked her husband to prove to her how much he missed her without wasting any more time.
And Neil did just that. He proved her how much he missed her all-night long.
