Watched most of these in the theater, except Phillauri which I watched online... I wrote a summary of what I thought here, and have written detailed reviews on most of the following in previous posts if anyone's interested lol.

Overall not a great year for Hindi movies, I did enjoy the small-town Bareilly ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal Savdhaan type but was very disappointed with Rangoon, Jab Harry met Sejal, Half GF and didn't expect much from Badri ki Dulhania or Judwaa 2 so thought they met expectation.

1. Raees - ok-ok type, I didn't expect too much so I didn't walk away disappointed. The Nawaz SRK cat and mouse game was interesting but everything else was just ok. Mahira is a beautiful girl but not much of an actress.

2. Rangoon - quite disappointing, I didn't like the first half at all (the whole Kangu-Shahid running around Burma and Arunachal part), the 2nd half was interesting but the climax was beyond pathetic and ruined the movie's impact completely. I like Kangana but this movie didn't give her much of a scope.

3. BKD - ok-ok I guess, I am not a fan of either Varun or Alia but the movie was entertaining in parts, 1st half was quite good and 2nd half felt like an extended ad for Singapore Tourism LOL, but overall one of the better commercial movies from this year.

4. Phillauri (at home) - timepass, nothing great. I haven't liked a single Anushka film since Band Baaja Baraat so I guess it was to be expected. The story wasn't bad or anything but it was not interesting enough to hold my interest.

5. Half GF - probably the worst movie of the year, except the music. I had read the book so I wasn't expecting anything great, but I thought Arjun and Shraddha were sorely miscast (Sushant and Kriti would have worked a LOT better here than Raabta probably) and the Mohit Suri + poor production value treatment didn't help at all. I thought Shraddha's cuteness helped but she really should work on her acting if she wants to last in Bollywood.

6. Mom - ok i guess, I am a big Sri fan from 90s movies and was expecting more from Sri in this comeback film post an awesome English Vinglish. It wasn't bad - it just a pretty mediocre revenge movie.

7. Jagga Jasoos - not bad, could have been better - wrote more in my detailed review. The musical style of singing the dialogues didn't really grow on me but Ranbir acted well and Kat was used pretty well by Basu (he played on her strengths).

8. Mubarakan - well I related to it personally being a Punjabi (lot of similar family dynamics) but its nothing great, Ileana and Neha Gupta were good eye candy I guess LOL. Arjun was nothing great - didn't like him in Half GF or this movie either.

9. Jab Harry Met Sejal: probably one of the worst movies of this year, SRK and Anushka were exceptionally medicore and I was most disappointed with Imtiaz, esp being someone who loved Tamasha and related to Ranbir's character a lot. Music was okay though.

10. Bareilly Ki Barfi - good movie - probably one of the better ones from this year - Rajkumar Rao was beyond amazing as Pritam Vidrohi, but the story was nothing new, it is basically a rehash of Saajan w/ Madhuri, Sanjay Dutt and Salman. Still the whole small town treatment was done pretty well so I walked away satisfied. Kriti was cute and Ayushman was good as usual.

11. Shubh Mangal Savdhaan - prob my favourite this year along with Secret Superstar, it was a small budget movie but had a more intimate feel, I really enjoyed Bhumi and Ayushman in this one. The topic was something quite risque but it was handled quite well, not once did the whole approach to the movie feel vulgar. Idk about watching it with family though, it could be quite a controversial topic.

12. Simran - disappointment really, I was expecting a lot from this one. Kangu is good - even exceptional in some scenes like her breakdown at the gas station - but the direction / script / screenplay were poor, especially the poor treatment of every character except Kangana. I liked the approach to the NRI life as this movie showed that life in USA is not a bed of roses, something I have personally experienced as well.

13. Judwaa 2 - I think this movie was exactly what it promised, a good timepass movie. Varun was ok but I really think he should get out of this Salman/Govinda image, I'm starting to think he doesn't have his own acting style. Taapsee and Jacqueline were good, I especially thought Taapsee was very attractive in this movie LOL. I was a little confused why the movies is 80% the same as the original? I was kind of missing the Salman-Lolo feel, Jacqui is no comparison to Lolo/Karisma Kapoor for sure.

14. Chef - also another nothing-great/timepass movie, i didn't think much of the original Hollywood one either so wasn't disappointed with this one. Saif was trying but I think his time in Bollywood is nearing its end, he looks a bit too old to play these rom-com type characters and while the movie had its ups, the downs/mediocrity was too noticeable for it to be overall anything great.

15. Secret superstar - good movie, enjoyed it overall, I thought it was a nice and sweet movie on domestic abuse and dreams and Aamir did a good job lending his name to this project. His role as Shakti Kumar was quite hilarious as well, and props to Zaira for carrying off Insiya's character well. Meher Vij as Zaira's mom did a good job as well.

Might watch Ittefaq today, decided not read the reviews because I want to enjoy the movie without spoilers.

Want to watch:

Newton - heard a lot about this one, Raj is v talented

Hindi Medium - wanted to watch this one instead of Half GF, will prob watch it one of these days.

Padmavati, I like SLB movies generally and enjoy watching Deepika on screen so hoping for the best with this one.
