The trouble of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's
Padmavati is far from over. Earlier this
year, the sets of the film were vandalised
in Jaipur and the filmmaker was assaulted
for allegedly distorting history.
Now, the outfit behind the attack, the Shri
Rajput Karni Sena, has burnt posters of
Padmavati, protesting the supposed
backtracking of the filmmaker's promise.
"While shooting in Jaipur Bhansali had
promised to show the film to us and
historians before releasing it. But since
then no one has contacted us, nor has the
film been shown to us," Narain Singh
Divrala, district president Jaipur of the Shri
Rajput Karni Sena, told IANS.
He added that the Shri Rajput Karni Sena
"will not allow the film to be released"
unless it is approved by members of the
organisation as well as historians.
The period drama is based on the
ruthless invader Alauddin Khilji and his
attempt to capture the beautiful Rani
Padmini of Chittor for himself. It was
reports of a romantic dream sequence
between Rani Padmini and Alauddin Khilji
that prompted the act of vandalism earlier
this year. However, Sanjay Leela Bhansali
had clarified that no such scene was ever
a part of the film.
A statement issued by Sanjay Leela
Bhansali productions said, "We clarify that
there is no dream sequence or any
objectionable scene between Rani
Padmavati and Allauddin Khilji. We have
been carefully researching and making
the film."
However, the Shri Rajput Karni Sena was
not convinced. In a fresh threat, Narain
Singh Divrala said, "We have come to
know through media reports that facts
and history have been distorted in the
film, and it is unacceptable. They are
trying to defame Padmavati."
The first look of the much-awaited film,
featuring Deepika Padukone as Rani
Padmini, hit the internet on Thursday.
Ranveer Singh, who plays the antagonist
Alauddin Khilji, and Shahid Kapoor, who
plays Rani Padmini's husband Rana Rawal
Ratan Singh, are missing from the
posters.
Padmavati is slated to release on
December 1.
