Aye! Gulaal always had underlying love and that was quite evident be it in the mli' scene of the scene where Talli and Kesar share the same plate and he shows no concern towards Gulaal. Pareshaani scene showed the first 'slip' from Gulaal's side. However, she quickly put the veil up. That scene is just darn beautiful.
I read about Mansi talking that 'pareshaani' scene was Gulaal's first realization of love for Kesar but never read the article posted above. This one is an elaborated version so thanks for posting. Quite an insight into Gulaal's heart. Later though, even Kesar knew that Gulaal loves him..how else would he know that when Gulaal had gone missing, she went to Talli's home where they lived in when they left their family home. Her acceptance shook him real bad in a good way.
Actually when I think about the show... someone mentioned the first part was from Gulaals POV and the post leap from Kesar's POV. Hence as audience we are given subtle clues about how Gulaal's love has metamorphosed with time.
The DV if you look at it, did not just impact Kesar but also Gulaal in equal measures Only that Kesar's pov was so loud and clear and Gulaal's was all subtle and siilent.
Gulaal deciding to make Talli as Kesar's partner was when Kesar refused to meet her and pretended to like Talli's snack more than what Gulaal had made for him. Infact his rejection strongly rankled her at a subconscious level. And the age gap definitely hit her... as she would always talk about hum umar ki ladki from that point forward.
And when he comes back after the leap... she is faced with Kesar's hate / indifference and expectations from the family to get Kesar in the right track and to settle him with a girl as promised during the DV. Inspite of the family talking a different language to Poonam Ba.
Its like even though Gulaal had strong feelings for Kesar as evident in the Imli scene to her touching him in the pooja as his wife or Kesar mentioning her as his wife in the tree pooja (not sure what pooja that one was 😆) The chemistry was there and so were Gulaal and Kesar's feelings... but at the same time Sudha, Paanba and Motaba; The Family, was asking her to do her duty... at the cost of her own chance at happiness and a life viz.. let Kesar go as she had no rights on him, not to mention Kesar's hatred towards her. All these clearly indicate that Gulaal's love for Kesar too had changed the same way Kesar's love had changed with time. Infact it was after the Pareeshani scene that Gulaal goes full force to get Talli married to Kesar and she fights a battle too on the one hand she is loath to part with the gifts that Kesar gives her and on the other hand she is duty bound to let him go to Talli. And she believes that he can be happy only with someone his age... like really 😆😆
If you notice Gulaal in most eye locks was affected in a sexual way with Kesar... It was very subtly shown, in the terrace hug scene Gullu sees his lips, in the pareeshani scene she does that a lot more times... she has suppressed all her womanly wants and desires for over a decade in the name of family and promises. Never let it out with anyone but she is so deeply connected to Kesar that she could not hold herself back.
The beauty here is that Kesar is fully aware of it and stuns her by telling the same to her the night before breaking the DV... that she has some needs and she is suffocating and strangling the woman within. Even here... Gulaal is affected by Kesar's closeness... Gulaal knows all along how easily she would fall for Kesar...
The moment Kesar declares his love for her and in public she is very very agitated and runs packing her bags. Beautiful isnt it... This woman who faced so many hurdles in life could not handle Kesar's love for her. What if the love manages to crumble the walls that she has built around herself and God forbid that she returns the feelings 😃. It takes her no time to become a wife to him. She, so easily, steps into that shoe and does not want to leave the house at all. Until Kesar points out to her that... that could happen only if she falls in love with him.
Infact I found it odd that Gulaal did not fall apart with Vasanth's death but infact found strength and meaning in fulfilling his Sapna. But the same Gulaal could not live apart from Kesar. Even after Vasanth's death Kesar gave her the strength to live. The young Kesar made her laugh even in the midst of her misery. Gulaal lost herself the 10 years she was away from Her Kesar. And after his return it took him what? 5 months to shake the ground beneath her and make her accept that she is his Gulaal?
Infact when I watched the final episode for the first time I was disappointed that Gulaal accepted Kesar only after she got the approval from all and sundry. But Gulaal being Gulaal (the show) is full of layers. If we take a re look, NOTHING could convince Gulaal. Not the ladies. Not Motabha. Not even Vasanth THE dream.
As Jayzee mentioned in her posts, imagine how shaken up Gulaal would be when Kesar says that he is going to leave her forever, physically and otherwise. She had the foreboding that he would not be able to survive if she let him go. And he meets with an accident albeit a minor one.
Gulaal senses that and falls apart on hearing about his accident, she could not wait to hear that it was a minor one. She cames running all the way from Rashipur to Talsagra with Reva in tow 😆😆 and the entire family could see what Gulaal had painstakingly hidden from all in all this time.
Her love for HER KESAR... the hidden Imlis scattered all over... like Gulaals feelings.
She gets into her old room to try and get some respite only to have Kesar barge into her thoughts at both conscious and sub conscious level as her Pati!! She was sooo gone right there 😃. If he dies again she will again be a widow but albeit this time Kesar's and not Vasant's and this girl is still stuck in Paap ki bhaavnaa 😃 She fights with God for giving Kesar pain... while it was she who has given Kesar the pain and he is only sleeping now and is not in any physical pain. But Gulaal on the other hand is inconsolable. As she knows... the minute he wakes up he is going to leave... and she would not survive it.
As Reemz pointed out Gullu dreams about Vasanth and that dream does not wake her up with a jolt as it should have... but the first thing she thinks of on waking up is Kesar and she panics on not seeing him.
Runs looking for him only to hear from him that he is leaving right away and forever. That is exactly what breaks Gulaal out of her Ostrich mode and her shell! And her confession... Tere bina jeene ki aadath nahi rahi ab Kesar.
Love the way how this dialogue could go back to the pre leap separation of Kesar and Gulaal. Cause then too she kind of sent him away and this time too as Kesar says from his POV she is the one sending him away!
She was planning to give a try to living without Kesar... like she did for 10 years. Then she did not expect to never meet or not talk to him for 10 years. But there was hope that he would return one day. It still broke her then... but she lived in hope. But today if she were to let him go... there was nothing to live for and she could not live through that... both of them are soo done if she lets him go today. And that would be for nothing...
Gullu has suppressed her emotions and her love to such an extent but she could not hold in her love anymore. Her love for Kesar keeps growing and expanding that she could not hold it in and more and she is falling apart. Gulaal has become the tortured soul that Kesar was till he accepted his love for Gulaal.
Then comes the final hug and the smile in Gullu's face in Kesar's arms. She finally finds peace and realizes how could something that feels so right could be wrong. Then again the smile that gets wider and shines through as Kesar puts his arm around her claiming and declaring her as his wife to his family. That peace and happiness in both was beautiful.
I did notice that many had issues with Gulaal being addressed as Yashodha for Kesar in the pre leap time. And how this very same thought would tie her up in accepting Kesar as her husband in the post leap era. Ironically in Hinduism... did we not delegate the role of a mother, Sister, Dasi and friend to the wife? But at the same time find it difficult to accept Gulaal as a wife when Gulaal played all of these roles for Kesar at various stages in life. As someone said... Vasanth was the path for Gulaal to reach Kesar. But Kesar was Gulaal's destiny.
A very very long post... but cannot help gushing about Gulaal and how layered this show was... not to mention the wonderful posters in the forum. This one is for keeps!
