28 episodes in, we already have a lot of questions stacking up regarding every character and their motivations as well as their past deeds. Some of them are in the process of being answered, but more and more questions are piling up!
Week 1-4:
Q#1. Satarupa- The first question was, on which ground was one of the children given away by her? 😲 Was it actually because it was a girl child? Or was there a bigger concern to keep her safe from the Laal Mahal (I don't think so, 'cause Satarupa never followed up what happened to her until Vatsalya's death...😕 there may be a bigger twist that she knew all along about Anami but preferred to let her be free from all that baggage of being a part of the royal family, but at Vatsalya's expense which she made up by showering all her attention towards him)?
Q#2. Narottam- Who is that kid wearing skirt, and why s/he is getting that evil-eye treatment from the grandmother? Is the kid related to them? And how?
Now we know he is Narottam, a puzzle that still continues to be so. Is he clearly a boy who was forced to act and live as an effeminate person since childhood? If so, by whom? How his life was before Satarupa's awareness of him, and how much her actions as well as decisions have further affected his life? 😲
Q#3. Damo- Is she nothing but an executioner to carry out Satarupa's decisions, or does she have her own secrets? 😕
Q#4. Guruji 😕 He was given much more prominence in the beginning compared to the later episodes. Guess the SIngh family members other than Satarupa are too miffed with him to have interactions. Or may be the showrunners are not focusing on his readings of all these signs and his extreme suggestions at the moment (which I appreciate), but will bring him back on screen once Anami's legitimacy as an heir is confirmed. Because she still has questions, and only Satarupa and Guruji have the answers.
Q#5. Pagal Panditayn 😳 Does she really love her adopted daughter?
So far she's an excellent character! It is more grounded to reality for someone to favour own child over the adopted one, the alternative being another example of a flawless, too good to be true stereotype. She at times when fearing for the safety of her younger kid scolds the elder one as she trusts the elder one to take care of the younger one. Her love is not blind, it's just as full of everyday emotions- which the masked togetherness of the Singh family can never match up to. Anami has certainly lucked out in that aspect. 😃
Q#6. Vatsalya 👏 They showed a kid getting showered by all the attention one could ask for, without turning him into a spoilt brat. The way he cares about everyone around him, one wonders how their lives would have been if the twins were not separated! Is there more to him, like all the other members of the Royal family?
Also, is he really dead? Or hidden by someone else not yet introduced (or Narottam)?
This might be the first time I'm hoping a cliche twist of bringing back someone dead will be applied in future; that's how much endearing the portrayal of this character has been! But then again, may be small doses are for the best.
Q#7. Anami 😊 All her scenes made it clear that she wears her heart out on her sleeve. Cudos to the makers of this show for not making her being adopted by the Pathaks a huge secret to be revealed to her. She is all the more the character she is because of this truth. Her mother's lie made her a stranger to her blood relations, but also indirectly made her someone who has no patience for wearing masks or leading a pretentious life.
The first encounter between Vatsalya and Anami showed how their lives together could possibly have been. Anami is Satarupa's daughter, with the courage which she may have been bestowed by the upbringing of her adoptive parents or she had it in her irrespective of the family she grew up in. Vatsalya would surely have been intimidated and proud in equal measure towards his younger twin. She could have been the only one taken into confidence about his thoughts of being free of all those burdens that came with being groomed as a heir. But would Anami have been okay (if she grew up in Laal Mahal) with such responsibilities, the way Vatsalya had to pretend that he is okay?
Q#8. Adhiraj 😉 Most of his scenes (with his boss or sister) are in stark contrast to the scenes he have in connection with the royal family. He is nowhere near the truth regarding Anami, neither is he being able to focus on the investigation about Vatsalya's death thanks to her. I think once he learns that Anami is indeed Satarupa's daughter, his intention to make the residents of Laal Mahal pay for whatever wrongs they committed will be back but Anami will always be his source of amazement about how she despite being born into that family is so not deserving of the negative feelings he harbours towards that family. Question is, why does he and his sister bear such animosity towards that family? Do the problems between them date back to the times even before Satarupa's marriage into the Singh family? And how is his family going to react towards Anami if there is any track involving them together in future?
Q#9. Baldev 😕 So far his character sketch has been quite shaky. He was genuinely affectionate to only his son and cares for anything attached to Vatsalya. Are all the other members of his family the reminders of his failures in one or some other way? Did he ever want to behave like a father to Narottam, or this part-irritation, part-indifference was always there since Narottam's birth?
Q#10. Dadaji & Dadiji- Vikram and Gayatri have a far more stable relationship compared to Satarupa-Baldev. But neither fulfills the benevolent grandparent archetype. Seeing their difference of opinion regarding Anami, I'm not sure his attitude towards girls born into his family (the only exception to this was Satarupa, but that probably was done as a compensation for getting her married to Baldev while keeping her in the dark about his past deeds).
Gayatri seems more accepting, as she wished for a granddaughter along with a grandson. But why she doesn't care for Narottam, after all he is the firstborn son of her own son? If she was the one to force him to behave in an effeminate way, why would she do that after talking about blood ties multiple times? Or does she behave like that under Vikram's influence?
Btw, Gayatri is one of the most stylish grandmothers I have ever seen on Indian telly. 😊
Additional questions: Sudha 😕 She's still too far away from the circle of events taking place in and surrounding Laal Mahal for me to understand her connection to it. Being Narottam's mother or Baldev's former lover is the most typical assumption, which may or may not be the case.
No questions regarding Pujan and his family 😆 They wear masks of concerned family members at times, and are clear-cut villains otherwise.
