@ red - We only get OTT Punjabi culture😭😆

I am planning to watch the Satyajeet Ray's movie provided they have accurate translation. But yeah I agree we will miss the soul of the movie even then as its derived from the childhood of most Bengali kids.

I agree it's just Punjabi now a days.

My childhood was spent with Gujarati varta (stories) and plays. And all we get is the garba and thepla in movies 😆

Lol I wish I watched the movie with you now because I feel I haven't understood the movie the way you guys have.
All Bengali reference and Netaji bit is really fascinating especially Netaji bit because I remember our history book was filled with many leaders but hardly 1-2 chapters on Netaji.

OT I really want someone to make a movie on Bhavai someone who understands the Gujrati culture the way Basu shows Bengali cultures. We have so many states with such rich culture and hardly film makers capture it. One of the reason why I loved JJ so much.

I wish I could write explanations for every scene but I have more or less explained a lot of things in my review (link given in BO topic page 1)
I was explaining some words and scenes to my son while watching it

Yes, as a Bengali I enjoyed the film a lot more as I could understand the tongue in cheek humor in the words and references to our literature and culture

Netaji has been horribly neglected in history books and movies, maybe because of the controversies surrounding his death. There are rumors that he didnt die in the plane crash and he was whisked off to a Russian prison and died there much later and it was all Nehru's conspiracy.

Basu said he was influenced by other folk musical drama of India like Bhavai of Gujrat, Pandavani from Chhattisgarh etc.
Mirch Masala and Bhavni Bhavai these 2 movies I think Ketan Mehta made in the Bhavai style, right?
I wish such movies got more appreciation now, but people are dismissing JJ as a mere musical inspired by the West, which is untrue, it was more inspired by folk musical drama, and also Ray's musical kids movie, Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne(GGBB) in its musical conversations...even the chocolates falling from the sky at the end was inspired by last scene of GGBB, when pots of rasgullas fall from the sky 😆

Here is GGBB on youtube with english subtitles, its a very old film so its in Black and white:

@Pallavi di Yes I read your reviews and the Agapastala reference now seems so funny. I even explained everything to my sister.
I agree about Netaji, its a shame though as he was one of the most prominent leaders. My knowledge about him is very limited and based on news and books only. So it was refreshing to see how Basu integrated his story in JJ.
I don't know much about those movies as never heard of them. I watch the plays on youtube but now that you've given me a name I will watch it and also the Bengali movie.

The problem with us we think that only West is great and make stellar movies but the gems our regional cinema provides is unmatched and wished it got appreciation. Just the other day I was watching a Marathi movie and it was so amazing. So guess from now on I am going to find as many regional movies I can and watch them.
