Under the chandeliers the size of baby elephants, the night time wind of monsoon his hair, Mahendra lay half asleep on his throne. Being king today was harder than on most days. His birthdays had been quiet thus far, but everyone wanted a piece of him this year. In all of the years leading up to today, he had never thought he would put his throne to use for sleeping. He was exhausted, couldn't move, he'd made everyone vacate the court.

On top of the festivity, there was also the matter that in the kingdom of Magilmathi, conflict was never ending. Upbeat, dutiful king also had to intervene in the choicest of problems today.

For starters, the Naagin clan had been fighting among itself again. Mahendra felt that in all of their generations of work as snake charmers, they'd somehow managed to imbibe some of the reptile's characteristics themselves. All that verbal venom, the king himself had to hold a court meeting about how best to keep them from killing each other. But to no avail, clan leader Shesha could have given Pallvalathevan a run for his money when it came to unrealistic expectations in life. In part sleep state, he sighed.

Then there was the matter of the Kumkum Bhagya department of his ministry. He couldn't for the life of his ever understand whether they were fortune-tellers or gossip mongers. Word had spread that Mahendra's bhagya was in peril again - no background to their claim, no evidence, their plot designed out of plot holes - he seriously thought about shutting down the department. But he ended up assuring his people of his safety at the public assembly that evening. Pointless as he personally found them, his subjects were not ready to let go of Kumkum Bhagya yet, after all these millennia.

A most curious string of violent attacks had also apparently struck Magilmathi. Coming to life was a figment of the female imagination - a pale, blue eyed, constipated looking male person. Looking dapper in his foreign dress, usually yellow, red, green, purple or all in colour, occasionally accompanied by his seriously long haired brother was reported all over the kingdom by girls between ages fifteen and twenty-five. They dreamed about them, analysed all happenings of each dream and became bloodthirsty should anyone report a different kind of dream featuring the said men.

A woman of twenty two happily married and not having such dreams was dragged by the hair out of her home and publicly shamed for preferring her husband over the blue eyed one, and the long haired one. This matter was too urgent to be discussed; he felt and postponed his birthday dinner.

His men went home unfed; Avantika must have been seething in bed. For, the dinner never happened. The plan of action had only just begun to be formed when one of Mahendra's older ministers informed him that some fifty years ago, in the month of July, a different male person featured in similar dreams. He was darker, taller, had a deeper voice, the women even believed him to have talent.
And that was when the Kumkum Bhagya head, Kalesham Bahutam, informed the whole lot of them that he was indeed returning. Reincarnated as a guitarist (nobody knew what a guitarist was) on the third of July, he will return as Advay Singh Raizada. Nobody knew what a Raizada was either. Just that, it was Mahendra's job to protect his female subjects from each other.

He must take this new challenge head on; there is no time for birthday festivity or even a nap, he started to think, slouched on his throne. He was sighing one moment, panicking the next.

With this, Shruti got out of bed. Even in a well-deserved siesta, she could not keep the fandom, the fights, the governance out of her mind. There is no rest for the wicked, sure, but none also for our global moderator.

Birthday or otherwise.
