Darkness is often equated with blocking light, concealment, and gloom. In the cosmic order it forms the natural cycle of day and light. Figuratively, darkness, hints of evil, mostly undercover hidden from the eyes of the world. Many unsavoury acts are associated with being carried out under the blanket of darkness. In the episode, being kept in the dark, signifies keeping another person ignorant about what's really going on. Dark settings also gives rise to a sense of mystery, which implies that things may have a flavour of intrigue, which leaves questions hanging about in mid air!
Kanak can see it so clearly, how she wants to keep him deliberately uninformed about what has been cooking, in her devious little mind. It's a good thing she is smart enough to predict that her polite husband will insist that she too taste the laced jaleebi's.Well ,she keeps her wits about herself and demarcates his liquored jaleebi's from her normal ones with a dividing line of rose petals! Impress the man not just by her culinary skills but her food plating abilities too! His being in the dark about her sweet tooth conspiracy adds to thrill of the scenario..
Talking about thrills in the middle of the night! when all are asleep and not a mouse stirs..a pair of scurrying feet followed closely by the roll of a wheelie suitcase is Payal.. Kanak's cry of revolution, break the chains! and forever be free! urges her to take this outrageous step! Payal silently progresses to the front door. Her parents expectations pulls her feet back..she turns back, dappled in shadows of moonlight and darkness one last back at the grandeur of the front room, she leaves behind..lord Shiva's portrait watches silently..as Payal relies more on the piece of paper in hand! keeps all in the dark, slips out of Uma Shankar's house with bag and baggage..
Uma completely in the dark, about his destined stoned state.. is lit up totally on the other hand by the level of her delicious cooking and her humble service. She deserves compliments and he does so abundantly. While Kanak fans him into a false sense of complacency, and nearly kills him with tender loving care. Poor Uma wonders what's got into her? is she for real! Besides which one of her two faces is she Sita or Gita? Kanak's deliberate tack of keeping things concealed from him, comes to surface with the mouth watering dessert.
Jaleebi's their colour ,their fragrance their structure ,so like her.. muses Uma as he looks at Kanak seated across him, dressed in a yellow and orange brocade outfit. She too, shines like the glossy, orange, crispy, sugary treat. He tucks in and as she predicted, he invites her to share his indulgence. To ward off his suspicion Kanak confesses she too loves jaleebi's and will surely join him. Uma is floored.. he refuses to keep her in the dark and shyly confesses, this is the first instance where she has shared his preference towards anything..Uma possibly gets positive vibes about how his bond is progressing with Kanak. Little does he realize that he is being grossly misinformed about her sentiments!
The unexplained miracle..when one dark secret is exposed by some higher powers! The wind out of nowhere blows! and scatters the line between the adulterated and the non laced sweets! Now all appear the same.. the justice is, that this way, both Uma and Kanak will taste the sweet fares of Kanak's hands.. who gets intoxicated? Is another dark secret. To be exposed at the right time with the right content out of the mouth of the right one?? or wrong person? For the deities have their own agenda. The two they have joined, as one Uma Shankar believes.. but the discrepancy lies with Kanak ,who rejects the enforced marriage. The deities come into play to fix issues between them. Uma fixes what Kanak fouls! The light too goes so that both in a moment of darkness can draw courage from the light of being at hand for each other in the darkness.. both grope in the darkness and restore light! Their dessert share begins again.. this time Uma invites Kanak.. with a jumbled up jaleebi platter! They both partake.. share.. but Kanak waits for the signs. A losing in touch with his senses Uma!He yawns and appears both drunk and stuffed! That is the light Kanak sees at the end of the tunnel of darkness.. does she see light??? or a mirage of what she wants to see?
The darkness in the Rathi house.. that still means the light of a committed stable consistent love..Bhabo crosses the boundaries of her house just to drop babsa's hankie with the home number scrawled on it.. in case he gets lost and found by someone. The power cut makes her think only about the safety of her life partner!
Someone seeks secrets,that come to light, in this dark night. The night, points to the right time! Kanak forces Uma out in the open air and decides to put him on trial. By now she assumes he has to be drunk. Uma watches Kanak, she certainly seems charged up! In the darkness of the night she appears animated! Kanak asks him bold questions.. about his family.. about his mindset about woman, she accuses him of thinking they are only fit to be domesticated ! Uma wonders why she has turned into a banshee? But Kanak demands he talks! the talk today!! How come he believes that women don't have basic rights to be free and live life like men do? Uma stares at her aggravated figure .. who is he seeing before him Sita or Gita? Kanak taunts him, the truth is he has double standards about women! On one hand , he gives them respect ! on the other hand he gets a woman married to a photograph!!another he forces to marry him! Uma glares at her.. but Kanak sneers at him! She will bring to light his dark side! Today.. does he know how to treat women of all ages? Payal.. Uma is livid by all her theatrics.. he gives her one answer to her questions...his faith is the driving force in his life.. and he only strives to do what reflects the right! as preached in the scriptures..
Kanak fumes, how he uses the inspired light of the scriptures to conceal the dark truths about him..
Is Kanak sane and clear headed in hearing and perceiving what Uma said? Both are guilty of not sharing what lies at in the inner recess of their hearts and minds. Presently, Kanak is out of order! Still continuing to dupe him, concealing issues from him.. but the dark side is that how the table turns.. Kanak gets laced with the alcohol jalebi's meant for Uma.. because Uma had to listen to home truths from Kanak's mouth!.. the woman next to his kin !.. hamlet53 30.6.17
