Everyone knows Yash Chopra for the Kabhi Kabhie and typical YRF romance, drama films but he also did a great job with movies like Deewaar - probably one of Bachchan's best roles. It was v dramatic but thriller-ish as well.

Rajkumar Santoshi, SS Rajamouli and of course, evergreen Yash Chopra, Prakash Mehra

i agree with Guru Dutt, Vijay Anand... it seems old directors were much more versatile.

From the new, Anurag Basu, SLB etc...Priyadarshan..

Among all, i would say Yash Chopra... he could give Deewar and Trishul, at the same time, daag, kabhie-kabhie, lamhe, veer zaara, mashaal, darr... equally great in all movies

He was amazing before he fell into romance rabbit hole

Dhool ka Phool - social
Waqt - thriller / drama
Trishul - masala
Ittefaq - murder / thriller
Mashaal - social

The only genre he didn't try was comedy.

Rajamouli is not really versatile either. All his movies are revenge dramas. Some injustice is done to the hero in the first half and he takes revenge in the second half. The situations and costumes change but the essential theme is the same in all his movies

- Satyajit Ray (although he mainly made art films)
- Raj Khosla
- Guru Dutt
- Vijay Anand (even if he's known more for his thrillers)
- Hrishikesh Mukherjee (he didn't try action but that doesn't matter, but arguable since he was a master of slice-of-life movies)
- Yash Chopra
- Subhash Ghai
- Rajkumar Santoshi
- Anurag Kashyap
- Dibakar Banerjee

I was tempted to add Rakesh Roshan but realized that all his movies are revenge dramas.

We don't have Chris Nolan, James Cameron and Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese types of directors here.
