the big league with Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?
(2005). The actor, who sizzled in a recent
photo shoot by celebrity photographer
Mario Testino, says that "evolution will
always be of paramount importance.
Katrina chats with HT about competition in
the industry, friendships, and more.
When you see new faces in the film industry
on a regular basis, do you ever feel
pressurised?
It's a bit of a complicated answer because
one would be insane and a megalomaniac
to not understand the nature of time or the
nature of the universe. Time does not stand
still for anyone and with time comes
evolution; and that's exactly what you
should be doing. I can't and shouldn't
think that I am going to rewind myself and
play a 21-year-old girl in a short pink
miniskirt. Of course, there are other new
actors and they will always keep coming, so
that [evolution] is the challenge.
You are pally with a lot of them.
Yes, and I am proud of them, though I don't
know everyone. Some of them are my
friends. But there isn't a moment when I
feel envy in a bad way. And this is the
correct way too because that's the process
of every industry including the
entertainment world.

What's been your biggest learning in the
same context?
As time goes by, you have to evolve to keep
yourself more than anything else
motivated and current' as a performer,
regardless of whatever industry you work
in. Whether you are an engineer, doctor or
an actor, you need to be current' and have
to constantly evolve yourself as life goes by.

But the film industry has always been
considered very ruthless...
It's a game of survival. It's a process that I
came to understand quite early on [in my
career]. And that understanding isn't about
looking around you and trying to compete
with people who are 20-21 [years old],
because that would be insanity, and, in fact,
illogical (smiles). I have to look at it like:
"This is me and this is my space, and how I
can be the best for this much, that role, or
how I can improve on what I am doing.
That's honestly what I am looking for and
looking to enjoy.
So, is there no sense of competition?
The sense of competition comes along
when you're like, "Am I doing good work,
or are we all doing good work? That
healthy competition should always be there,
because that's what drives you. You need to
look over your shoulder and be like, "Wow,
people are coming up with some really
good performances and good films. You
need to have that information about the
industry that you work in. Healthy
competition is obviously there, but there is
no sense of envy for people who are at
different stages of their career. They are at
a different stage, while I am working on a
different timeline.
