AASTHA'S FAMILY
 | Purnendu Joshi(Vijay Kashyap) Purnendu Joshi (58) is a middle class conservative man who came up the hard way. He spent a major part of his life bringing up his four children while working as a Personal Assistant in a private company. Most of his earnings have been spent on educating his children ' none of whom have found a firm footing in life yet. Purnendu has big expectations from his children, especially from Vinay, his only son and to some extent from his daughter Aastha. Purnendu tries to overcome his difficulties without complaining' what keeps him going is his great sense of humor. |
 | Rukmini Joshi(Rameshwari) Rukmini(55) is a typical middle class housewife whose life revolves around her children and her husband. She is dissatisfied with what life has to offer and never fails to point out to Purnendu that he's been a failure all thro' his life unlike his colleagues, who were smart enough to accumulate wealth and improve their financial condition. She loves her children and pines all hopes on her only son Vinay. She is a staunch believer of Ma Durga. |  | Vinay Joshi (Mehul Kajaria) Vinay(25) is the eldest of the children. He is very enthusiastic and capable and wants to come out of his middle class status and move up in life. Vinay's big dream is to go to America, work there and become rich. He is very ambitious and this has made him a self-centered person. He's just waiting for the right opportunity to quit his middle class existence and step out. Vinay is someone who wants the best things in life ' he doesn't want to end up like his father who depends on his children for a living. Vinay and Aastha have grown up as buddies & she has always been the bridge between her father & her brother. |
 | Aastha Joshi ,(Aastha Faujdar) Aastha(23) embodies the aspirations and values of today's young working women. She is ambitious, wants to pursue her career, and respects and loves her parents. Being the eldest of the three daughters, she is aware that her brother has other plans for himself, and hence decides to take care of her parents. She loves her parents and wants to ensure they are comfortable always. A hotel management graduate, she works as a floor manager, in one of the five star hotels owned by the Ranawat Chain of Hotels. She hopes to have her own restaurant some day. Once married Aastha takes on the responsibilities of her sasural very seriously. She values and cherishes the relationships she shares with her in-laws and parents. |
 | Shilpa Joshi(Iti Shree) Shilpa(21) is a young aspiring actress who wants to make it big in the glamour world. Shilpa knows that her parents won't approve of her career and hence keeps it a secret. Aastha looks forward to Shilpa to look after her parents once she is married, but Shilpa has no such plans. Shilpa is in search of fame & fortune and has no time for anyone. The problem with Shilpa is that she is not as talented or smart as she believes she is. She aspires big but is too na've to handle the big bad world. |
 | Chhaya Joshi(Sana Saeed) Chaya(19) is the youngest of the three sisters. An accident that occurred years ago has crippled Chhaya and she uses a wheelchair to move around. Chhaya needs a lot of care and attention as she's physically and emotionally dependent' yet she never admits that she needs help. She is closest to Aastha and Aastha ensures that Chhaya is always taken care of. Chhaya is hopeful that she will walk some day. |
 | Vanraj Ranawat(Raja Bundela) Vanraj Rananwat is the chairman of the Ranawat group of companies. Born in a middle class family he worked his way to accumulate wealth and give himself and his family a stature in the society. A man of power and prestige, he is very kind and gentle to people he is fond of. He commands respect and is able to get along with the young and old alike. Vanraj is extremely fond of his bahu Aastha. |
 | Sulochana Ranawat(Navni Parihar) Sulochana controls the Vanraj household and has a say in every decision taken in the house. Absolutely opposite her husband, Sulochana believes in hierarchy and class distinction. In fact she regrets that her daughter Deepa is married to Mahen, whose family is not richer than theirs. It was Vanraj who stood by his daughter and hence she is now trying to make sure that Deepa lives a comfortable life. She loves to gossip especially against her daughter-in-law Aastha, which leads to uncomfortable situations in the house. |
 | Shubh Ranawat(Siddharth) Shubh is a handsome young man and the youngest son of Vanraj. Extremely dedicated to his work, he is a complete charmer. Shubh is a man any woman would want for a husband and any mother as a perfect son- in- law. On his father's request, he quits his overseas job and joins the Hotel business full time. It is his hard work that takes his group of companies' forward. Shubh is a man of principles and believes in doing things right 'this sometimes leads to jealousy among the brothers . Shubh falls head over heels in love with Aastha and wants to live a good, happy life with her. He stands by her and is a pillar of strength to her. |
| Pratham Ranawat(Sumit Arora) Pratham is the eldest son of the family but it is Saksham who runs the business with Vanraj. Pratham is not interested in running the family business. He is egoistic; selfish loves to flaunt his money, latest cars, and fancy gizmos, throwing glamorous parties'in short someone who loves all good things in life. Pratham believes in living life king size and hardly spends any time with his wife Aditi who is sensitive and a serious minded woman. She does not fit into the glamorous mould that Pratham wants to see her in. | |
| Aditi Ranawat (Farhana Parveen) Aditi is a sensible, serious young woman from a fairly rich traditional family. She married Pratham based on her parent's choice. Her father and Vanraj are business associates and their marriage was decided between the two fathers. However after a few months of marriage ' Aditi discovers that she would never be able to get along with Pratham. A painter, she soon realizes that she does not have the right environment to paint and also sees her marriage going to the dumps. Slowly they distance themselves from each other. | |
| Saksham Ranawat (Faizaan Kidwai) Saksham is the second son of the house and he runs the hotel business of Vanraj group of companies. Saksham is smart and is considered a financial wiz in the family. Everything to him is money' however Saksham is irritated with the fact that he is the only son in the Ranawat house who actually works full time. Though he is the only one running the business he is worried how the property would be divided amongst them. However his wife Anoushka manipulates him and makes him work against his own brothers. | |
| Anoushka Ranawat (Vaishali Nagrath/Nazreth)) Anoushka is Saksham's wife and the most manipulative character in the family. She comes from a fairly well to do family, isn't interested in working. She is a housewife but wants to be the queen bee of the house. She keeps provoking her husband to take complete charge of the business. Anoushka knows that Saksham would find it very difficult to even think of going against his brothers or his father, but she will go all out to instigate him to get power and control of the family business. | |
| Deepa Mehra(Shalini Khanna) Deepa is the na've, protected daughter of the house. Deepa has been brought up with a lot of love and attention. So has grown up thinking that anything she wanted would always get done. She falls in love with Mahen, a middle class man, who works as a counselor for an NGO and marries him. Deepa is a lot like her father, with a heart of gold, but unlike him she is vulnerable. . Deepa idolizes Mahen and thinks he's the ideal husband for her. She probably sees a reflection of her father in the man.. | |
| Mahen Mehra(Nishant Shoukeen) Mahen is a very self respecting middle class man who has refused to be a 'ghar-jamai' and he is liked by most of the family members. Being an honest man Mahen is always called up to render one service or another' and this keeps him very busy. Despite his hectic schedules, when Mahen comes back home, all he sees is his wife complaining about something or the other and so he gets irritated. Mahen's biggest flaw is that he is a short-tempered man. He doesn't know how to convey his feelings to others and a lot of people misunderstand him. However for Deepa her world begins and ends with Mahen. | |
| Other characters Maya Sahani(Aarti Dave) Maya is a 40 yr old woman who has been working in the hotel business of the Vanraj group of companies for a long time. She willingly decided not to marry because she was the only child of her parents and could not leave them alone. Maya prides herself on being up to date with everything that is happening around her. She is on a first name basis with everyone in the Ranawat family' and insists that she too should be addressed by her first name.She plays mentor, guide and best friend to Aastha. Later, after Shubh gets married and Aastha is given the pride of place, as a part owner of the company, Maya starts having ego hassles with Aastha. This leads to a lot of conflict between the two women-- Maya and Aastha. |
