It's no secret that SRGMP has had a flawed format since the day Shaan walked out and announced public voting. In the years that followed, we've managed to lose many talented singers, and we've given the titles to singers who aren't even that good (Debojit, Aneek, Jasraj, and in particular, Kushal).
Here's what I would do to fix that. And just to make it more interesting, let's say this new format is implemented for the first time in 2020. Introducing -- Challenge 2020: A new format for a new decade.

Auditions are conducted by sending in recordings, which are then reviewed by our dear producers and directors. Let's say 50 contestants are selected -- 25 boys, 25 girls.

In the first phase of the competition, the 50 contestants are all divided into 5 groups of 10, 5 boys, 5 girls. There would be 5 gharanas -- I'd go for Jatin Pandit, Shankar Mahadevan, A.R. Rahman, Javed Ali, and Shiv-Hari.

In the second phase, we use public voting to bring the number of contestants down to 10. This would be done through the same system used in C05, the green cards, yellow cards, red cards, etc. No blue card chakravyuh bull-you-know-what.

In the top 10 phase, this is where a panel of judges from the musical industry should come into focus. The producers need to give the grand jury a good solid briefing as to criteria -- sur, taal, etc. From here, we move to what is used currently, the grand jury score helps the mentors decide who is eliminated.

Now, before we bring up the threat of regional voting (Debojit winning because of Assam, Aneek winning because of Bengal, etc.) here's what I'd propose to minimize this threat -- a weightage system for overall score.

Public voting is worth 10% of the score, studio voting is 5%. The studio musicians/orchestra also get to vote, and it's worth 10%, the mentor votes are 15%, and the grand jury votes are 60%.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Public voting is useless mainly due to the regional voting that takes place.. It becomes more of a regional singing competition!!

I hate it when Aditya calls out the contestants with their state's name.. This season he said it in the first day when voting started, then thankfully he stopped.. But earlier days they used to give a certain title to every contestant based on their region.. For example, Assam ki little poetess, Royal cub of bengal and so on (2007-08 were the last seasons I watched so I remember only those). The regions vote not because of singing quality but for their state!! And this is also not the fault of the regions, but of the show itself for promoting this for a long time!!

It would be great if judges/jury scores are also counted.. I thought the scores would be counted but no 😵. Then what is the use of giving scores? We will still see top scorers in bottom like last week.. And then the same old elimination melodrama 🥱.

Having said that, jury is also not scoring well giving some contestants more scores than they deserve and some lower scores.. So this is the only reason I can opt for public voting.. But.. but.. they are not giving reliable voting information too 😛 .. Matlab har jagah gadbad hai 😛

Now enough of my rant and coming to your topic.. Your suggestions are awesome!! However, I don't think so Rahman will be interested as he is not into reality shows..

By Shaan walking out I was referring to him coming on stage.. usually poor Shaan ended up having to be the cool and calm pacifier on the show...Mom called him "Ismail Darbar's babysitter"
Yeah, Rahman wouldn't be up for it. Why the hell not-- put Himesh on!

My suggestion is rather old fashioned and straight forward.

No need of any public voting. Let the juries decide.
  • Individual jury vote should not be shown (of course, the Judges and Zee team would know who voted what). But no public showing, so no more pointing fingers to juries (it happened a number of times this year and in past)
  • Aggregate the total marks of the jury for a participants over at least 10 episodes (5 weeks). So that any particular 'bad day' can be overcome if the participant is really good.
  • Bottom 5 gets eliminated.
  • Start with 15 participants, so that after 10 weeks (20 episodes), show is left with top 5 participants.
  • Instead of a single Grand finale, to make more money for the company (ad, sponsers etc), show can have a series of finals.

All kinds of challenges should be there.

Gazal nights, Qawali nights, Classical type, light music type etc etc.

This!! Used to be there in the earlier seasons.. Where they had these rounds in every episodes, and we could see how versatile the contestants were!! Unlike now where everyone sings whatever they want in their own genre..

2005 finale strikes a good balance of those challenges...I like the format...except the finale includes all the challenges. Voting lines remain open until the last score is given, and there we go.

I also think that in order to prevent fraud, Neeraj ji and co should hire an auditing firm for votes.
