A phrase coined years ago defining political scenarios between certain world super powers .Commonly the term cold war, relates to existing hostility but expressed in a non violent manner. Today's episode, for me connects with the phrase. In the main Kanak and key characters from her in laws seem to be engaged in a struggle that is carried on by various means, other than use of actual weapons. The fight is done by making use of situations and the weaponry used is sheer presence of mind!
Kanak's main strength is that she never wavers from her purpose and goal. What so ever has transpired with her, is all a means to the ultimate end she aspires to achieve. The memory of what the shop means to her Bhabo, and the oath she made to her parents is enough to chivvy her along in the cold war she has got herself involved in. She braves the gibes, jeers, innuendos, all with a touch of a smile.." sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me".. is what Kanak is made off..
Massi/Kanak scene is a fair example of the dignified cold war that transpires between the two. Massi watches Kanak's every move! Sweet talks and pampering, that really are taunts It's amusing like a cat and mouse game. Kanak has to hide the papers from Massi who is hell bent to help Kanak unpack. It's obvious she suspects Kanak of carrying some tool to help her to maintain contact with the outside world, maybe there lies a hidden mobile phone in her baggage? It's a scene where Kanak is subtly frisked! Kanak very nearly loses the papers, when by sheer presence of mind she pulls mouse! around out of her bag of tricks! Both women try to divert each other's attention! Massi's seems preoccupied with puns of husband and wife coming together, rather noticeable! Mind you, the point when Kanak actually sends Maasi out of the room for water! as the food is piping hot.. just to retrieve her papers!To me is perhaps to gauge the strength of her opponent. Bless Shiv! he comes as Kanak's saviour from massi's onslaughts! Massi's feelers do go up into action and next minute, her sweetness gives way to a caustic threat to Kanak! better watch it! I'll be watching you smart girl! She even mentions her eyes, Gabbasa !big whiskers! he may appear simple but has a vulture's eyesight! it's more evident then, that Kanak is under house arrest situation, be it Ladnun or Kerala.. she is under surveillance for her own safety's reason.. the scheming cold reason of Massi..its really Kanak's knack of taking things in a stride that keeps her afloat in this family she finds totally daft! In her musings she comically dismisses them and keeps her inner strength going..
Ved and Vansh's slight falling out is really frustration at being unable to locate the shop's papers.. the cold war situation arises when Bhabo intervenes and distantly comments she will not have her boys squabble over preoccupations of Kanak! she continues to begrudge Kanak. Vansh can be brash and get himself in a muddle when faced with an issue. Ved though having presumably police college training, can think outside the box, and he mentions the registry office may have records of paperwork to do with the shop's papers!
Open hostility curbed by forced tolerance! The scene between Kanak, Suman and Palomi in the background, has to be yet another example of how even a young teenager can be cruel in the use of mannerisms and words. Kanak's normal request for her need for a hairdryer is turned into a common jeer by Suman! Yes be her guest use the natural hairdryer! Solar power! It may be a wakeup call for Kanak too! asking for a hairdryer when the bright sun is out! But the fact remains, that the hairdryer blows and styles! Which possibly Suman and Palomi are unaware off.. something tells me, they will be discouraged its use! However there is no doubt that Suman bears an obvious dislike toward's Kanak, and makes use of every available instant to put Kanak down ,backed by the mute yet partisan Palomi .Kanak with her thick skin once again needs to be lauded in this scene. She maintains her balance..her thoughts are elsewhere!!.. a phone booth in the grounds of the hotel!!
Cold war may also have a connotation with a clamp down of communication. There lies an undercurrent that Kanak although invited to speak to her family is not given the access to do so! Some strange reason or secret lies behind this. But knowing Kanak , she will go to any lengths to get what she wants! Very nearly creeps past gabbsa's vulture eye, and manages nearly to make use of the way the gods point out to her! the little girl with the mobile!
But Kanak has to learn to that cracking through Uma Shankar's security ring of fire is far from easy! Whereas Kanak simply by her wit and intelligence manages to gain access to the little girl's mobile phone! he endeavour to phone Arvind goes awry! So can be seen in the episode that the phone ,mobile or landline holds its important connection.
Massi too needs the use of the phone to ask about her sisters welfare.. she manages everything in Uma Shankar's life, his disabled mother, his business? His immediate family ,and now his wife and her security too.. she was right nothing escapes her eyes.. she identifies a breach in family security! By the new outsider ..kanak! and off they go! Uma and his Massi to confront Kanak! she is caught in the act! Uma's cold face. Distant and aloof when Massi almost snatches the phone from Kanak!is a chilling reminder that behind all this clipping off Kanak's wings lies Uma Shankar himself!
This cold war between Kanak and the family she is forcibly married into, continues undercover of pleasantries. In the precap, Maasi herself covers her back, for Uma to observe, and turns the tables on Kanak by clarifying that she was given the chance to speak to her family ,but that she turned it down by reiterating , that Uma's family is her new family! So who is she ringing now? Uma faces Kanak and tells her unflinchingly ,to accompany him to Pushkar! Question is, who was Kanak phoning? Vansh ? or Arvind ? did Uma check the little girl's phone..last dialled number? Did he get through to Kanak's family? Hence.. his asking her to come to Puskar with him?
