Today's episode confirmed that Arjun is indeed undergoing Stockholm Syndrome since the time Maya brought him back in the ambulance, drugged him, tied him up, framed Ayan for rape, etc..
Following is an insight into STOCKHOLM SYNDROME
Stockholm Syndrome:
They say that when you get burned by fire you don't put your hand in the hot oven again. But that's not necessarily the case. Sometimes, it's the fact of being burned that emotionally bonds you to an abuser. In fact, studies show that emotional abuse intermixed with small acts of kindness can bond some victims to their abusers even more than consistent good treatment can.
Virtually anyone can become a victim of SS, & all that is required is the presence of the following 4 conditions:
1) That there is a perceived threat to the captive's existence, & they fervently believe that the captor will carry out the threat
.2) That the captive experiences small acts of kindnesses from the captor within a context of terror
3)That the captive is isolated from any other perspectives other than those of their captor
4) That the captive perceives that they have an inability to escape
In all such cases, Stockholm Syndrome provides the victims with the necessary psychological shift that was necessary to survive with their ordeal until such time that they were rescued.
It is important to remember that Stockholm Syndrome develops subconsciously and on an involuntary basis. The strategy is a survival instinct that develops as an attempt to survive in a threatening and controlling environment.
The Components and Progression of Stockholm Syndrome
Following are the components of Stockholm Syndrome as they relate to abusive and controlling relationships. Common symptoms include:
1)Victim having positive feelings toward the abuser - Arjun having positive feeling for Maya
2)Victim having negative feelings toward family, friends, or authorities - Arjun having negative feelings for Ayan
3)Abuser having positive feelings toward the victim- Maya having positive feelings for Arjun
4)Inability to engage in behaviors that may assist in their release or detachment from the abuser - Arjun not siding with Ayan in fake rape trial as siding with him could have got him released from Maya
5)Victim supporting or helping the abuser - Arjun supporting Maya in front of Vandana
Following are several stages in the progression of Stockholm Syndrome:
The victim dissociates from his or her pain, helplessness or terror by subconsciously beginning to see the situation / world from the abuser's perspective. The victim begins to agree with the abuser and certain aspects of his or her own personality, opinions, and views will fade into the background.
By doing this, the victim begins to learn how to appease and please the abuser, which may keep him or her from being hurt or worse. Similarly this tactic can be used to manipulate the abuser into being less dangerous, at least for a little while.
After a while the victim begins to realize that his or her abuser portrays the same human characteristics as anyone else. At this point he or she will begin to see the abuser as less of a threat. Some abusers may even share personal information in an effort to bond with the victim and to promote pity rather than anger.
This bonding, in turn, leads to conflicting feelings (e.g., rage and pity) and illogical concern for the abuser. The victim may even ignore his or her own needs.
Once the traumatic event has ended, however, the victim must again learn not to dissociate from his or her emotions and not focus on the abuser. This can be a very difficult transition
Arjun seems to be a clear cut case of a hostage victim undergoing Stockholm Syndrome under Maya's captivity ( Information gathered from various sites on the internet & assembled together)
